Public discussions today seem to me to often suffer from the effort imbalance between those who do, make, or are responsible, and those who express opinions. Case in point: when someone writes an essay, they've put in many hours of work. Those who comment on it do not need to even read it to express an opinion. Too often the opinions expressed are flippant, uneducated, first reactions, "hot takes". This does not advance the discussion.
