I understand that, politically, the Byzantine Empire was the continuation of the Roman Empire,

but I feel like the name Byzantine Empire is still useful because culturally it was still distinct from the old Roman empire and the Western successor states.

Also, I don't see anyone claiming that we should stop using the name "Babylonia" and exclusively refer to the Babylonian empire as Akkad, since they all called Babylonia Akkad. It's because we recognize the useful distinction between the Babylonian empires and the Sargonid Akkadian empire
