This is what makes rhetoric so much more difficult than dialectic.
In dialectic, you only respond to the precise words the other is speaking. And they respond to your words and vice-versa.
In rhetoric, you try to understand not only what the other is saying, but what they precisely mean by that, and how that is an important puzzle-piece to their entire worldview.
That is why it is not enough to merely counter the argument they have voiced:
You have to convince them to exchange their entire mental puzzle, so that all of the pieces continue to fit together.
