First book done!
Book title: Longitude - The true story of a lone genius who solved the greatest scientific problem of his time.
Author: Dava Sobel
My thoughts:
I hadn’t been expecting much from this book.
I bought it from a pop-up bookshop as part of a 3 for $20 deal. This was the random 3rd book I had never heard of and it looked to be the most interesting of the remaining books to choose from.
To say I enjoyed it would be an understatement. It wasn’t a dry and dusty history account but an entertaining re-telling of a very underrated part of scientific history.
I’m not usually a history book reader so for me to be completely captivated by such a theme says a lot about the way the book was written.
I found myself barracking for John Harrison, a name I had never heard of before but was wholeheartedly behind throughout the book, even though I already knew the outcome!
I was lucky enough to have visited Greenwich UK over 10 years ago. I would love to return, if only to marvel at Mr Harrison’s machines and truly appreciate his efforts.
