I'd like it if every client were also a relay, and intermittent uptime for such clients could be tolerated on some level. Fully p2p systems are the most resilient. Their clients would configure their relays to filter by peers and peers of peers (subscriptions). Proof of work would be configured into each client, and it could be left running, receiving and relaying events, and dedicating a few desktop cores to PoW. Mobile clients could be supported over LAN to a desktop or dedicated node hardware, and laptops and phones would connect to the user's private relay as thin clients.
