I would like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update on the recent issues we encountered with our Nostr relay system and the steps I have taken to address them. Please find below a summary of the incident and the actions I have taken to ensure a smoother and more efficient experience moving forward.
Earlier today, our Nostr relay experienced a power outage, resulting in a temporary disruption of services. Upon rebooting the system, it became apparent that our server's storage capacity had been completely utilized. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, I promptly added additional storage and restored the relay to full functionality.
Upon restoring service, I conducted a thorough investigation into the cause of the storage capacity issue. It was discovered that the relay had not been properly configured to implement the whitelist feature, which led to an unforeseen influx of data filling up the storage space at an accelerated rate. I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
To prevent future occurrences of similar incidents and to improve the overall performance of our relay, I have made the decision to transition from the nostr-rs-relay software to strfry. This transition may result in some downtime for our relay during the implementation process. I assure you that every effort will be made to keep the downtime to a minimum.
During the transition period, I will be transferring events from the existing whitelist to the new server in preparation for deployment. This means that all events associated with the members of our meetup group will be seamlessly moved to the new server once it is ready. However, it is important to note that if you have been using our relay to track the wider nostr ecosystem, you will need to add another relay to manage that aspect as our whitelist will begin to be enforced again.
I sincerely apologize for any instances of server spam you may have experienced. Under the new system with strfry, I will have implement much more robust filtering mechanisms that will significantly reduce global spam and limit the events you see to only those from members of our meetup group.
I appreciate your understanding and patience during this transition period. I will be working diligently to ensure a seamless migration and a more efficient relay system. This will require no action on your part though you may notice momentary downtimes as I transition us to the new server.
