At the intersection of technology and art, a new art scene has emerged on the World Wide Web and the blockchain, where certificates for Digital Art are being traded as Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) across different cryptocurrencies.
A highly speculative and highly creative market in which - paradoxically - each work of art can be experienced for free by the whole world, while at the same time being artificially scarce so that it can only be owned by a limited number of people.
The work of art becomes irrevocably a part of the blockchain and is thus archived on each server of the currency network for as long as the respective cryptocurrency exists.
The archival takes place either completely on-chain by storing the entire source code of the artwork on the blockchain, or as a digital certificate to a Digital Artwork, which is stored off-chain but decentral on the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS).
Artists, galeries and institutions gain access to a free and open trading platform with payment processing, digital certification of artworks, decentral storage of meta and media data, as well as the possibility of automatic transfer of royalties on secondary market transactions if programmed into the smart contract.
Regardless of all the ups and downs in cryptocurrencies, this new technology is solidifying its place in the traditional art market, becoming a vital and integral tool in the field of Digital Arts.
