Study finds no link between marijuana use and starting or stopping opioids

A new study concludes that there is no link between marijuana use and a person's use of illicit opioids. The study found that cannabis is not a gateway drug that sparks a person's desire to try narcotics. However, marijuana is also not effective in helping wean addicts off opioids. The results have significant implications for U.S. opioid treatment programs. The study combined the results of 10 previous studies involving nearly 8,400 people prescribed medication to treat opioid use disorder. The data found no link between weed use and rates of illicit opioid use. The study suggests that healthcare systems should adopt individualized treatment approaches for opioid addiction that take into account each patient's circumstances.
