i have a feeling you’re already aware of Iain Banks’ The Culture series but it always strikes me as a deeply thought-out deconstruction of Star Trek
Vinge’s A Fire Upon the Deep also gives me similar vibes. where Banks’ deconstruction of Trek is kinda political/philosophical, Vinge’s is more high-concept: what if Star Trek had to maintain a minimum level of science fiction “hardness” without discarding stuff like warp drive or intelligent computers?
