Sometimes I wonder if there's some greedy entity somewhere with a spreadsheet that collects all of the data on our income and personal spending and gives us some kind of 'contributor to the economy' score.
I know this sounds paranoid but it's one of the things that bothers me about 'smart' appliances. The notion that one day a GE, LG, etc. could decide it's been too long since you last replaced a major appliance and flip some kind of digital kill switch.
We more or less already tolerate similar "no longer supported" behavior from the makers of our electronic devices (or the cellular data networks upon which they rely), so why wouldn't manufacturers of automobiles and appliances get in on the game of planned obsolescence?
