With the news of the secret $100 million investment in Bluesky by Bain, I keep thinking about protocols.
Maybe the perceived "drawbacks" of #ActivityPub are ultimately strengths?
#ATproto handles identity in a way that allows a single sign-in across apps. But wouldn't this make it easier to profile you? Is this why crypto VCs are so attracted to it?
And ATproto has funding in the 100s of millions by VCs but at some point they'll want to turn a profit. There is ZERO pressure here to ensh*tt*fy

Mike Masnick, who sits on the board of #Bluesky, claims the team was too busy to announce the series B funding (see screenshot).
But something is fishy.
Even the VC firm - Bain Capital Crypto - isn't listing Bluesky anywhere on their website: https://baincapitalcrypto.com/portfolio/
Why the mystery? Was Bluesky afraid of a public backlash & asked to keep the information under wraps?
Sorry if I keep repeating myself but I will forever be skeptical of Bluesky and think of the tale of the scorpion and the frog.

I'd like to put together a list of people who are publicly resisting / calling out LLMs and AI slop.
Why? I enjoy reading my Fediverse feed in topical lists and I need something to counteract the unrelenting AI hype I see in the media.
Do you have any recommendations?

My experience of the #fediverse :
Year 1 (2023):
It feels a little lonely as 99% of my friends stayed on Big Tech platforms.
Year 2 (2024):
I start a blog - #TheFutureIsFederated - to explain the fediverse to "normies"... and I make a lot of new (techie) friends.
Year 3 (2025):
My techie friends encourage me to start self-hosting with #YunoHost... and I do! (GoToSocial, PeerTube, NextCloud...) I LOVE it.
Year 4 (2026):
I plan to buy a Heltec to try out off-grid mesh radio communication 💁‍♀️

Apparently my Fedi promo video is giving error messages on YouTube (shocker).
So I just logged on YouTube Studio for the first time in months to see what's going on... and found some interesting comments.
I'm not caffeinated enough to deliver zingers but I hope my response was adequate.
On the upside, I also saw a few comments of people who set up new accounts here, so yay.
As for the unplayable problem: no clue. But this is why I LOVE #PeerTube and on my website I'm using the PeerTube embed

Some say other protocols have bigger budgets and are better at marketing.
I say: the Fediverse - by the people, for the people - has passionate advocates who use their talents to promote it, often without any financial incentives. It comes from the heart.
Before FOSDEM I asked my friend @npub1ms7…qe2y - a super talented photographer - if he'd consider bringing his professional camera to take photos of speakers in the Social Web devroom. He did... and so did I.

Packing for #FOSDEM 🥳
I have so many items of clothing promoting the Fediverse that I could change outfits multiple times a day 😂
If anyone is interested in a forest green sweatshirt that says "the future is federated" (size small, unisex) let me know. I had it remade (comped) because v1 came out differently than my mockup.

A quick update about the exposé I'm writing about that "European social media platform" that had a hurried announcement last week.
The piece is coming and it is JUICY.
But I'm postponing it till after FOSDEM because I got a couple of big scoops last night that I need to develop. Every day I receive new jaw-dropping revelations.

I'm pretty fired up exposing the ridiculousness of #WSocial, a new social network purported to be a European alternative to X that launched at Davos (yikes).
The French press devoted many articles to it (meanwhile: crickets about the Fediverse).
Before I go full steam ahead grabbing domain names and creating a web site that shows the weaknesses of W / suggests to check out the Fediverse instead, I want to put it to you: should I do it?

An important PSA for people who are active on #Bluesky and who, upon hearing that the ICE account was officially verified, are saying: "I will just block it."
Blocking on Bluesky is NOT PRIVATE: it's very easy to see who is blocking any account by visiting sites that list that information.
I took a screenshot from https://clearsky.app, listing all the accounts that are blocking ICE (I pixelated avatars and usernames for privacy purposes).
The safest bet is to mute (that info is private) 😫

Looking back at 2025 I can't help but feel an immense sense of gratitude towards the fediverse.
I found so many friends and lovely communities on here. I feel part of a rebel alliance, working towards the goal of creating a better internet - and resisting broligarchs.
This year I made a stock photo for the fediverse and an introductory video. I hope I can find MANY new ways to support the good cause in 2026.

I spent 6+ hours building LEGO sets yesterday - one for my child (a pirate ship) & one for myself (the Wicked Emerald City Wall Art - still a work in progress).
I was checking my fedi feed from time to time and it was making me SO HAPPY to see many friends building LEGO sets. It seems a popular hobby here 💛
You should have seen my excitement when I found a rare teal brick separator in the Wicked set 😂

By the way, your homepage states: "Follow us on" followed by the icons of Facebook, X and LinkedIn. I always found it odd, since those are algorithm-based U.S. companies and you are the EUROPEAN Commission. How about putting your Mastodon icon on your homepage?

There is something truly magical about witnessing (and helping) your child learn to read and write. *Especially* in the age of AI.
Meanwhile, many humans only a decade older than my child already default to using LLM systems for any form of writing. For “convenience’s sake.” Not to mention grown adults (who should know better).
This is making me even more motivated to advocate for digital literacy… and make sure my child develops & nurtures critical thinking skills. For life.

Dear Fediverse, thank you for being a safe haven from AI slop.
This morning, I checked out Pinterest for the first time in forever and saw an image purporting to be a LEGO set that was obviously AI generated - yuck!
Then on Reddit's popular page there was a video compilation of people saving children from terrible falls = AI slop.
YouTube's homepage: a short video showing a child and her dog covered in mud = AI slop.
What was I thinking? I should visit #Lemmy and #PeerTube instead...

A tale of two online spaces.
One: by the people for the people, with chronological feeds.
The other: funded by crypto bros and with pick-your-algorithm feeds.
I shared the exact same content.
Genuine interactions in the first place.
A grand total of ZERO reactions in the other - even if I have real life friends and contacts there.
Is the second place hiding my posts to 1100+ followers? It feels like I'm screaming into the void.
Guess which place I like best & which one I plan to abandon?

Earlier this week #TeenVogue was folded into #Vogue US and its parent company #CondeNast fired 6 reporters who fearlessly covered politics, speaking truth to power ("coincidentally" they were mostly BIPOC women or trans). Talk about capitulating to the current political climate.
I know it's not much, but this morning I canceled my #WIRED & #NewYorker subscriptions (also owned by Condé Nast)... and made sure to let them know my reason. Plus I added a note about their awful AI narrations #noAI

I hear you! I managed to convince SO MANY PEOPLE to install Signal in 2020 so we could keep chatting... all my family and friends groups have been in Signal for 5 years. They would yell at me if I said: "now let's move over to Matrix". Plus I'm not a fan of Element 😭

Unpopular opinion: the silver lining in server outages is that they pull the curtain & reveal some hard truths about who is really behind some services we use... especially stuff we think are alternatives to Big Tech (spoiler: maybe they aren't).
Case in point: last year's #Microsoft outage took out #DuckDuckGo (https://mashable.com/article/microsoft-outage-affects-bing-copilot-duckduckgo-chatgpt).

As someone who studied Mass Communication in college, I am absolutely shocked by the little media coverage of the AI slop video published on social media by the U.S. president... where he puts on a crown, gets on a jet & proceeds to drop massive quantities of fecal matter on protestors of the No Kings day.
Had this happened 10 years ago it would have been front page news everywhere.
Are we so desensitized by his undignified behavior + AI slop that nothing shocks people anymore?

Yesterday I was singing the praises of #Jellyfin with someone in my life and they went: "Sounds great. It's a pity it cannot be connected to Google Drive or iCloud".
Fedi friends, this sentence sent actual shivers down my spine. I have no poker face and I may have even blurted out "ew why?" Then I said: "you know that the cloud is basically someone else's computer, right?"
So yes, I'm a certified Fediverse person now (in case there were any doubts).
And I just installed Jellyfin YAY 🥳

First it was Czech, then Finnish and now German.

I wish someone would explain to me how these are legal in the EU? I passed by a store in Paris advertising them in the window and I got so confused. France has super stringent laws regarding the right to your own image… I hope they’ll have the same fate as Google Glass (aka 🪦 )

great points Jared. When I was younger I thought that Bush’s second term and Berlusconi as PM were absolute calamities. Compared to what’s happening today (in the U.S., Russia, Ukraine, Gaza), it was really nothing.
Having to look after a small child is a great distraction… but also daunting because of the decline in culture and so many institutions. What will the world be like when she’s older?
I need to keep a positive outlook for her and a fighting spirit 🥲

Feeling anxious today because... the state of the world.
One thing that I keep thinking about - to maintain hope - is the cyclical nature of history.
The past decade have felt like a modern version of the Middle Ages (or Dark Ages).
But what followed that? The Renaissance and the Enlightenment. The Age of Reason.
I need to read up on all this to cultivate a positive outlook. To stay hopeful.

certain clients - like Ivory on iOS - allow you to create custom filters to hide all boosts and/or replies, posts with media, links, mute words, etc.
Earlier this summer I spent two weeks in a remote location with no WiFi and spotty 5G. I soon discovered that Ivory was « eating up » massive amounts of data from my phone plan.
So I created a filter that hid posts with media. Problem fixed.
Game changer for sure, highly recommended

As a clueless self-hosting newbie I often ask for advice here on the Fediverse… and get really helpful feedback but most of the time it reads like a foreign language to me (a non-dev).

To follow-up on my previous toot, knowing how anxious Gen Z and Gen Alpha are about the environmental catastrophe, I think that a lot of youngsters would think twice about using AI tools so frequently... if they knew about the energy consumption involved in their activities (esp. water to cool down data centers).
A text overlay guessing energy consumption for each prompt would be a game changer (as unrealistic as it sounds).
That's just me and my brain's nighttime activity 🥲

Last night I fell asleep listening to the latest episode of the Vergecast, which covered the #GooglePixel 10 phone & how it’s « AI stuffed ».
What did I dream about?
That I was browsing AI-generated photos on my phone. They seemed pointless and absurd (like: a mini car sitting on a car seat).
Then a white overlay appeared on screen, showing the energy consumption it took to generate the photos.
I remember screaming when I read « 100 liters » (22 gallons)… and then I woke up 😐

❤️ When my flight landed yesterday the woman sitting behind my 4-year-old tapped me on the shoulder and said: « You’re an amazing mom. I heard how you interacted with your daughter during the flight and she’s lucky to have you as her mom ». I almost started crying - best compliment EVER and so unexpected.
🪴 Home after a month-long stay at my parents’ and delighted to see that all the plants survived.
☕️ About to enjoy my first cup of coffee while everyone sleeps in the house.

thank you. Yes, I was thinking of this through the lens of POSSE (something I've recently started to do).
I personally draw the line at X (deleted all my accounts, never looked back) and Meta (deactivated all my accounts, some as far back as 2017).
I would be OK with cross-posting to Bluesky w/ gobo.social.
I feel icky about re-activating my LinkedIn account but I wonder if it's just me being stubborn... I could definitely introduce many of my old friends & colleagues to the Fediverse

I quit all Big Tech platforms cold turkey in November 2024, post-election. I was using them once every blue moon (looking at you, Instagram, Threads and LinkedIn) but I basically deactivated or deleted all my accounts, without any announcements.
