Because the question came up, yes, there are only three known places in Manhattan take bitcoin payments.

All of them use Lightning, and none use custodial wallets. This is more than simply a choice, because if the option were available, it would be easier.

New York State has the most restrictive regulations pertaining to custodial services. No strike (npub1ex7…vyt9). No River (npub1xke…d0en). No primal (npub12vk…pugg) or CashApp (npub1cas…dg5l) for Lightning. Self-custodial Lightning is the only game in town, and it’s not exactly straightforward to set up for a business.
