Martyr John, a merchant of Trebizond, was in Crimea selling his wares when slandered by a jealous Venetian. Accused of renouncing his faith, he refused to deny Christ, despite torture and imprisonment. He remained steadfast, even as his flesh was torn. Dragged behind a horse until his body was scattered, his relics were later recovered, fragrant and incorrupt.
