Reference manuals don't usually become infrastructure, but the DSM did. It was built to give clinicians a shared vocabulary. What it does now is determine who gets a diagnosis, what treatment follows from that diagnosis, and how people narrate their own mental lives. The distance between those two things, the intention and the function, is the invisible architecture the piece is about.
