Your coworkers are crazy and poor. Tradesmen and laborers don’t escape the economic or social conditions they actually get battered worse than people with a wealthy middle class life. The people who get a wealthy middle class life from nothing go to college. I don’t mean to make anyone feel bad but there’s a need for reality. No one who does this would be doing it if they could do any better, no one who could do any better should be doing this.
The only exception to this are union guys and that’s like being on the organ list. Our 56 year old carpenter says he’s #20 on the list for a union job. “Only a few more years” unless there’s an economic downturn, then it’ll be a few more years after that. It’s the only way he’ll get a decent pension though and the *only* way he’ll make over $50/hr or get benefits, and this guy has decades of experience and basically does the whole job himself. Meanwhile the boss charges $10,000 to pour some sidewalks and he pays $3,000 for wages $2,000 for materials and pockets the rest. Who would be stupid enough to work in this industry when you’ll get your back broken by middle age?
