Just one day after Trump issued an ultimatum to NATO, laying out several conditions before moving forward with sanctions against Russia, House Speaker Mike Johnson said that both Congress and the Senate have an “appetite” to advance sanctions on Russia and are ready to work together to impose them.

It’s a rather unusual situation: Congress and the Senate, both controlled by Republicans, want to move ahead with sanctions on Russia, while the U.S. President, also a Republican, is putting up roadblocks to prevent them.

If Congress and the Senate pass sanctions on Russia and Trump vetoes them, it would create a major political rift in Washington.

In a Truth Social post earlier today, U.S. President Donald J. Trump said he is prepared to impose “major sanctions” on Russia—but only if all NATO members agree to do the same and fully stop purchasing Russian oil, which at this point mainly involves Slovakia and Hungary. He also urged NATO to collectively impose tariffs of 50% to 100% on China, arguing that “China has a strong hold, even a grip, over Russia, and these powerful tariffs will break that grip.”
