Bishop Bretanion of Tomis, in the 4th century, openly confronted the Arian Emperor Valens when he visited Tomis. While the court flattered Valens, Bretanion rebuked him for his heretical beliefs, refusing communion with him. Impressed by Bretanion's courage and the strong faith of the Orthodox community, Valens, though angered, did not impose his Arianism on the city. Bretanion continued to shepherd his flock until his peaceful death.
Let us pray that Bishop Bretanion's courage inspires us to uphold truth.
