The building in front is the Rotunda, built in 306 AD by emperor Galerius. Has been used both as a church and as a mosque. It is the oldest church in Thessaloniki and one of the oldest in the whole world.
On the background are the walls of Thessaloniki, built during the Byzantine period in 390. They used to surround the whole city but the Ottoman authorities demolished big part of it at the end of the 19th century.
