Yeah, when I first signed into it and played around for a few minutes I thought, “My God, this is just re-skinned Mastodon with less functionality.” 😩 This realization was followed by a sadness that everyone flocked to Threads… after turning their noses up at Mastodon. Like, you thought the one wasn’t good enough or worth trying but you were all willing to sign up for a nerfed version of it. 😭 And this is why we can’t have nice things.

Honestly, it basically is only ads at this point. 🤣 Your feed is totally nonlinear and curated by Meta; barely includes people you follow (they’ve even gone on record saying that it’s populated with established content creators from their other platforms right now); and since you can’t search anything but usernames, there’s no way to see content based on even searching for things you might like. If it doesn’t come up your feed passively, or is already on the timeline of a person whose name you know to look up and specifically choose to look up, you can’t find it.

Okay, I’ve been lurking in the shadows here for awhile. (Or stuck my head in the sand like a #nostrich.) I guess it’s time for an #introduction. I’m an author, editor, and filmmaker; a voracious reader, a passionate filmgoer, and an occasional hardcore gamer. Also I’m a tech enthusiast excited to watch the future transform into the present, rooting for decentralization and open protocols to take off whenever and wherever possible. I’m very excited by the potential of #Nostr: I’d like to find the niches of this platform that cater to my interests and that are interested in what I have to offer as well. (Yes, this means if you follow me you will have to put up with me marketing my own stuff, haha, but I also actively engage with accounts and posts that are doing things that interest me.) So, from what I can tell in my time there so far, #Threads is just Mastodon with much less functionality (even the app is a carbon copy of Mastodon official), a useless search function that only searches usernames, corporate gatekeepers, an algorithm that boosts who they choose to curate into a nonlinear timeline that rarely shows people you actually follow (doubly problematic without a proper search function), and quote resharing. Thanks for the tips! Yeah, I was surprised actually how many people saw my first post. I assumed especially since I didn’t use hashtags or anything it’d get completely buried, or that this would be a ghost town like so many other new social media apps. Imagine my surprise when a day later it had 20+ comments. I’ve never seen that before right out of the gate. Let’s just say this community’s first impression has been stellar. 👍 (Or should I say 🤙)
