Finally finished Broken Money. Thanks @npub1a2c…w83a for the awesome book and @npub1h8n…rpev for the reading of it.
I got stalled out in the first section of the book dealing with the history of money. I guess I can only take so much talk about sea shells and stones. And it likely didn’t help that I listened to a bunch of podcasts that Lyn did talking about those topics before listening to the book.
But once it got to the talking about gold, central banks and speed of settlement, it was great.

If I understand this right, the relay would be able to see the public IP of every client and correlate that to the group IDs that they are downloading? In the worst case of a note being published to a single malicious relay, that relay would know the public IP of every client that downloaded the note and know that they where a member of the group (or at least have high confidence of it)?

I chose to go with a BSD to give the bitcoin network a little bit more diversity of operating systems. Bitcoin is likely a heavily Linux leaning install base. But that might be hard mode with ordinals software. Don’t know how well they run on non-Linux.

Does any know why all the zaps I send using Damus and mutiny wallet show as unknown recipient in mutiny wallet? When I click on the friend’s view I can see those zaps correctly, so I think my nostr key is in there right.

I’ll agree that there are some costs that aren’t always clear with opening the channels. Hopefully these wallets will continue to improve that experience. Federations and ecash might help as well if the user is ok with the trade offs in custody. But I guess that feeds into your argument that they are too complicated if you are having to understand that.

I think there’s a difference between running LND and running something like Mutiny Wallet. I don’t think the average user should be running LND. But something like Zeus or Mutiny for everyone is awesome. My understanding is that both Zeus and Mutiny run a node in their wallet software.

No one likes every position of the politicians they vote for. There is a hierarchy of cares for the voters and this may be lower than other pro-freedom positions that they feel trump has. I’m not really pro trump, but I’m going to hold my nose and vote for him as the least worse option.

I’ll take the free energy, but I also don’t think it would break bitcoins security model. Instead of being bound by electricity costs, we would just move the bottle neck to manufacturing. But this assumes that the free energy tech is widely available.

Ocean doesn’t include them in the blocks that they mine, but other miners do. Once in the blockchain you have to have them or the crypto hashes break because the block has been modified. You can run a pruned node to reduce the amount of data stored.

Not really. Once they are included in a block they are part of the blockchain and can’t be removed.
You can run knots instead of core which will filter the transactions out of the mempool. But that doesn’t stop miners from including the transactions within blocks.
Remember that they are still valid bitcoin transactions. Part of having a permission less network is allowing stuff you don’t like but still follows the consensus rules.

I’ve been looking at the documentation for the newly released taproot assets. The documentation and marketing seems to either talk at a really high level about how awesome the protocol is or go really deep about the daemon and APIs. There doesn’t seem to be anything in the middle. Can anyone take a stab at these questions:
1. It appears from the documentation that the entirety of an issued asset exists within a single bitcoin UTXO. Does this mean that only the issuer of the asset can update balances? IE it’s completely custodial?
2. Does that mean that the issuer is able to censor any transactions that they wish when posting updates to the underlying UTXO?

What’s been really hard to understand about taproot assets is the security model from the end user perspective. Can the issuer of the asset censor transactions? Do end users custody their own assets? Is it permissionless to use? IE what are the compromises from the Bitcoin ethos.
