In my timeline, I'm hearing a lot, re: France, "this is why you must never believe polls".
I think that's a bad take.
If the left and center had not believed the polls, they would not have worked together to create this outcome.
I'm hardcore about the politics in the US, and the merest dabbler in the politics of France, so g'ahead and bust me if I'm being ignorant, but my reading is that believing the results of the first round is what created the results of the second round.

1) If you do not smoke, please please please don't start. It is a terrible thing.
2) When you see me do things like smoke, or quaff my ubiquitous diet cokes, or any of my other odd tics, you are not seeing what makes me an excellent programmer.

Here's a thing. I gave a short prezzie followed by an AMA on Thursday, for young persons, college-aged. It went well, thanks.
But in the *chat*, a student remarked on the fact that I was smoking. (I was outdoors, I work outdoors for as long as I can, about five months a year.)
And the student noted that I was a smoker, and that many hardcore devs seem to be smokers. And asked whether smoking helped people become pro geeks.
I've rarely been presented such a wonderful teaching moment.

Also, being "there" early is part of my coping mechanism. I love it when I get to a place 20 minutes early and go find the nearest place to buy a cold diet coke, return to the site, and drink my soda and smoke a cigarette.
I am one of those people that makes the GPS say "Recalculating route" in that passive-aggressive tone she always uses.

I don't so much use a clock to manage my day. Instead, I focus on how much time I get where I am alone and it is quiet.
Virginia, bless her heart, does her best to be very quiet. But she's pretty deaf, and often, that means creeping around on noisy tiptoes, then suddenly banging cookie sheets together. :)

My wife is a true-blue day-ist. She's awake at dawn every day, tho she'll sometimes just lay in bed and read or surf for an hour or two.
I am . . . indeterminate. My circadian clock seems to have become broken, from a fairly young age.
And depression has worked its wiles on me in the past, and seemingly, today, as well.
I wake up every day and think to myself, "I like it when it's warm and dark and quiet, I'll just stay here for a while.

Largely a day of meh, and meh now, too, what with fireworks hurting my dog, and the season finale of the United States of America.
But here I am, outdoor office, and I muster a smile, for you, and cuz 2 highlights.
1) I gave a good prezzie this morning to some young geeks, and I had really wanted to.
2) I cooked my cheeseburgers for dinner tonight to absolute *perfection*, w/home-grown beef, home-grown tomato, home-grown pickle.
Not so much, but at this point, I'll take every win.

If we want better men, and we certainly do, we need to take better care of our boys.
Women can help with this, they really can, but ultimately, it's up to us men who have survived our masculinity, to the extent that we have, to serve.
Do it today. Even just a little.
Mentor a boy or a young man who could use even a *semi*-healthy male figure in their life.
It makes all the difference. It did for me, and I've sought to pay it forward. You can, too.
