I feel confident that *Yume Nikki* will always be unique.
So you would recommend *Undertale*? I used to see people talk about it a lot, but don’t think anyone in my circles have given it a thumbs-up or down.

I remember I first played *Yume Nikki* back in high school while messing around with RPG Maker, but didn’t get very far. Later on, a few years after college, I played it again and was totally engrossed, in a way that very few pieces of media have ever accomplished. Almost every other strong memory I have of playing a game is from childhood and has a bright, cheerful feeling to it, like my first time playing *Super Mario World*, or *Goldeneye* with my cousins, but this one is a lot moodier.
I’m not sure what I’d make of it now. I’d still enjoy it, I’m sure (if “enjoy” is the right word), but it’s a game you need to be in the right mood for to get the most out of it.

I was reading through some of my old articles, and one of them linked to this piece from Bonald, “Rejecting the Enlightenment is only the beginning of thought.”
> Having rejected liberalism, you understand that the state cannot avoid the big questions about God, free will, and the nature of human flourishing, because any social order will represent some implicit answer to these questions. However, this does not yet answer any of these questions.
Everyone on the Right today was, at one time, some variety of Liberal, and it’s easy to either continue holding a Liberal position without realising it, or reflexively adopt the most anti-Liberal position possible. The second works more often than the first, but regardless, it’s necessary to reexamine almost every social and political opinion one has in order to think clearly and consistently about such things.

Some ways to improve the liturgy at one’s parish:
> The change you can make for your lectors (and perhaps for your priests) is simple: Stop announcing things before they happen. No more quasi-liturgical “Good morning” at the beginning of Mass, no more “the response is…” before the responsorial psalm, no more announcing the page to turn to for the hymn. […]
> [T]hese announcements are either redundant, or the information can be conveyed in a less disruptive way. And while it may seem that I am making a mountain out of a molehill here, these tiny little additions really do add up to change the atmosphere of the liturgy from a seamless whole where every element is an act of worship, to something more like a classroom or committee meeting. (And again, unlike changing the music, adding communion rails, eliminating the unnecessary use of EMHCs, or some other big move, this is an easy fix.)

> The fact of the matter is that this what the Left IS. They are not good people in any sense of the term. They’re small-minded cretins with delusions of grandeur. And we should not brook any kind of argument that “these are just a few individuals, you can’t tag the entire Left with this!” Yes, you can. We’ve already seen the level of support that the Left - as a whole - gives to its stochastic terrorists, no matter what they do. To support it is to be complicit with it, and there are millions in this country who are guilty of giving this aid and comfort to left-wing enemies of the people of America. And no, both sides aren’t “equally to blame,” as some have tried to argue. We haven’t seen the Right assassinating its political enemies nor burning down cities. False equivalency arguments like this should be rejected outright. […]
> The only real way to “turn down the temperature” would be for the Left to deescalate themselves. But they simply aren’t capable of doing this to any great degree. They can’t help themselves.

> As much may be said of eggs; the best way of feeding them to a child is to take them still warm from the hen and have him eat them just as they are, and then digest them in the open air. But where this is not practicable, eggs must be chosen fresh, and barely heated in water, that is to say, prepared à la coque.

Montessori:
> If discipline is to be lasting, its foundations must be laid in this way and these first days are the most difficult for the directress. The first idea that the child must acquire, in order to be actively disciplined, is that of the difference between good and evil; and the task of the educator lies in seeing that the child does not confound good with immobility, and evil with activity, as often happens in the case of the old-time discipline.
And all this because our aim is to discipline for activity, for work, for good; not for immobility, not for passivity, not for obedience. A room in which all the children move about usefully, intelligently, and voluntarily, without committing any rough or rude act, would seem to me a classroom very well disciplined indeed.

> We do not consider an individual disciplined only when he has been rendered as artificially silent as a mute and as immovable as a paralytic. He is an individual annihilated, not disciplined.
Montessori emphasises the child’s liberty throughout the book, but note also that she adds here, “We must, therefore, check in the child whatever offends or annoys others, or whatever tends toward rough or ill-bred acts.” She’ll discuss this more later, but while a Montessori classroom is much freer than is traditional, it’s not anarchic.
The teacher must learn to judge when she should and shouldn’t intervene when a child is doing something, and she says this was the most difficult thing for her new teachers to learn, especially those experienced in traditional classroom settings.

There’s a somewhat long discussion of classroom furnishings, which is something the Montessori Method is known for. Too much to excerpt, but in short furniture should be proportional to the children, not unduly constraining (so no desks!), and easy for the children to move. The students are responsible for keeping everything neat and orderly.

Montessori spends several pages on the importance of regular physical exams, e.g., height and weight. Unsurprising since she was trained as an MD.
The most important point, though, is this, “And with all this [the students] will have acquired habits of order, and, above all, they will have formed the habit of observing themselves.”

> Montessori's idea of "liberty" makes little contact with that word as it was defined by Kant or as it is understood in northern Protestant countries. Montessori's "liberty" is that of Catholic tradition, which offers an absolute freedom to do what is right, but reserves to authority at all times the power of determining what is wrong.
This and the other excerpt from the introduction explains something that seemed a bit off in the other book, which emphasised the “liberty of the child” but also seemed very structured in the lessons and routines.

This article starts off discussing AI slop making its way into library catalogues, mostly because of ebook vendor Hoopla, which is definitely a problem. Then it segues into concerns about “fascist propaganda.”
> In February 2022, two organizations of librarians, Library Futures and Library Freedom Project, sent Hoopla and OverDrive a letter demanding accountability over “fascist propaganda” materials being included in their services.
>“These are books that are of such low accuracy and quality that not even Amazon will sell them. This includes materials from white nationalist publishers Arktos Media, Antelope Hill Publishing, and Castle Hill Services,” the organizations wrote. “In Hoopla, for example, the third search result for the word ‘Holocaust’ returned a Holocaust denial text not carried by most book distributors.”
One person the author spoke to anticipated the obvious response and said, “We're always standing directly against censorship at every step of the way,” but of course, a de facto censorship is exactly what they want and it makes things like “Banned Books Week” seem even more nonsensical than they already are.
Libraries by nature must implement some degree of curation, and honestly, librarians should accept that and just be honest about it. “We can get you almost any reasonably-available book you want, but these are the ones we recommend and believe to be high quality.” Unfortunately, the bulk of current librarians aren’t frank about this role and have taste as bad or worse than the general public.

Poured my coffee this morning, noticed a dead fly floating in the mug. Inauspicious start to the day.

you could do a lot worse, sure, but it was a bit boring. I dropped it after a couple episodes, IIRC.

This is a helpful post for providing some context to voter fraud. Many of the errors described are likely simple mistakes, but the main point is this, “A system that cannot prevent innocent errors also cannot prevent malicious errors.”

I was walking through the library and did a double-take when I noticed this title.
The word is just used as a colloquial way to refer to Black people here, not pejoratively. At a glance, it seems to be a collection of vignettes. The first couple have a supernatural theme, so I guess it’s like an American Black version of *Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio*?
