The NSA Taps Ocean Cables

Global governments can not tap and record every router and switch on the planet earth, so they have to do it at large centralized locations.

There are cables that connect different continents’ internet. These are centralized choke points that can be easily be monitored.

Edward Snowden’s leaked documents detail how the NSA taps ocean cables of other countries. And how the British government tapped ocean cables as well.

And nothing has been done to change this situation, since these leaks were released. In fact, with larger budgets, it’s gotten worse.
Let’s first understand how Simplified Privacy works, and then how it can help deal with these challenges. Our VPN takes a double layer approach.
Layer 1 is System-wide. This is similar to a regular VPN.

If you’re using both systemwide and individual profiles, then connect to systemwide first, and then do the individual browser-only profiles, which turn red.

We highly recommend picking a system-wide location in a country close to you. Not only is this faster, but also when you cross the ocean cables, you’re part of a pack with other people. Otherwise it is encrypted, but you’re crossing them as a lone individual. For example if you live in the US:

Remember, your home ISP only sees that you have the systemwide connection. Then from there, the traffic is routed to different isolated countries. This makes the data packets different sizes from different routes.

Other VPN providers offer multi-hop WireGuard, but they do so in a purely linear fashion. This means your home ISP is seeing the exact same packet sizes as the ocean cables, making it easier to track the route.

Linux Distros are Negligent!
Many use Linux for privacy, but the vast majority of Linux distros are negligent and corrupt when it comes to distributing browser software.

For example Linux Mint, Ubuntu, and many other distributions include the stock version of Mozilla Firefox. This stock version (from Mozilla) has rampant spyware, telemetry, and bogus invasive settings. So if the primary purpose of Linux is privacy, then why do all of these distro packagers package a version that’s not private?
Some will say "Oh well you can just download private browsers on your own." The problem with this is that often these private browsers, such as the US Navy's Browser rebranded as Mullvad, primarily block and spoof, which then causes websites to break for purely technical reasons or are purposefully flagged by the site's financial security.

Remember that LibreWolf and Mullvad both set the timezone to UTC, which may get you flagged on sites like eBay. So then people end up needing regular browsers for many things including eCommerce and Cryptocurrency websites such as Coinbase.

Even the best selling author and privacy extremist, Michael Bazzell, who absolutely hates telemetry, said on his podcast that Vanilla Firefox is the best for eCommerce. But when users need Vanilla Firefox or Ungoogled Chromium, the burden to set this to be private is overwhelming. The sheer number of settings and knobs throws the average person off.

So to get it to work, we use what's called "Enterprise Resource Policies", which is basically just a fancy technical word for browser rules.

These rules have it run on the "local proxy" to work properly with the VPN environment. Anyone can view the policies in "about:policies". For example in Firefox, we can see it's doing the correct port for WireGuard.

Disable Telemetry
All these policies can be viewed, such as the disabling of telemetry.

Organization
This means when you go to the settings, it will say "This browser is being managed by your organization." This is because people typically use "Enterprise Resource Policies" with proxies in corporations.

The browsers are stored in ~/.local/share/simplified-privacy/applications

Socks5 Proxies vs VPNs:
These hushed elite secrets are more relevant now than ever.
Did you know that, LinkedIn makes more money off selling user data, then they do from paid job ads?
Or even worse, Twitter's valuation collapsed after Elon Musk's takeover, but then yet according to Fidelity, it got a rebound from Musk's training his AI startup on your data.
It should not surprise you then that both LinkedIn and Twitter, restrict many VPNs for new sign-ups. And more and more websites and services are banning Tor. How can you succeed with privacy under these conditions? In this note, I'll use Nostr's uncensored nature to teach you this critical knowledge, while it still works...

VPNs
When we think of VPNs, we usually think of protocols like WireGuard. WireGuard has public/private encryption keys, and the traffic is encrypted.

One potential issue with WireGuard is it's typically linked to a Datacenter. These datacenter IPs are then blocked by websites that often want to purposefully find out the identity of their users.

Socks5 Proxy
Socks5 Proxies simply forward the traffic to make requests from a new destination WITHOUT encryption. This typically is done only in a browser, but it could work in the command line or any app.

Many users wonder what the purpose of a Socks5 Proxy is, if there is no encryption. There are many use-cases.
Some websites may block VPNs coming from Datacenters. Socks5 Proxies are can be used to make the traffic appear to be coming from a residential home.

Speed
Since encryption slows down a VPN, a proxy is more lightweight, and thus faster than WireGuard.
Firewalls
Also WireGuard may have issues with residential firewalls, that socks5 helps avoid.

Tor Block
Another issue is some websites may block Tor. Tor exit IPs are published and known by all participants.
WireGuard + Tor = Fail
Since WireGuard uses UDP packets, it can't be used in front of Tor. Tor uses TCP only.
OpenVPN Slow
While OpenVPN, on port 443 (with TCP), in theory COULD be used in front of Tor. In reality, this is unbearably slow. Because you're doing 3 hops of Tor AND THEN a 4th encrypted hop on an external network.
To get around the speed issue, most users looking to hide Tor use, instead use Socks5 Proxies. These are fast because it has no encryption, but the ISP can't see anything because you're using Tor first.

Tor Exit Sees
The only one who the user isn't hiding from is the Tor exit. Tor exits still <b>can't</b> see through SSL/TLS or httpS website encryption. In other words, Tor exits can see WHAT domains you visit, but not your username, password, or what data you DO on those websites.

No Sudo
A huge advantage of Proxies is that they don't require sudo. They can just work in just the browser.
Simplified Privacy
Our Datacenter proxies exit the same servers and IP addresses as our WireGuard users. So the website won't know if you're using Tor or a VPN. I hope we make it financially through beta testing, to begin offering residential proxies as well.

For example, Discord is hosted on DataPacket. So if you use Mullvad for Discord, then DataPacket sees your real residential IP and ALL Discord data. It's a pure conflict of interest to hide from the company with that same company. Plus it's a one-stop shop for global court orders.

Speaking of which, by using large international providers, the country of the VPN doesn't matter anymore. For example DataPacket is Mullvad's Mexico exit, but it's a UK/US company. So you ain't hiding in Mexico, you're getting a UK or USA court order.
And even worse, when you do an audio call on SimpleX, XMPP, Signal, or anything it uses WebRTC. WebRTC is connecting you and the person you're talking to peer-to-peer. This means there's a good chance M247 is seeing the IPs of both people, since every other VPN also uses M247. And then you're doxxing BOTH SIDES of the conversation by these large providers, even if it's SimpleX.

Mullvad is lying bro. They mouth off about being in Sweden, but M247 is all over the US, with the web panel going through Cloudflare. US Cloudflare is seeing Mullvad's customer panel and communication with M247, and Mullvad even rented servers using a Gmail.
Even worse, CIA contractors like Oracle buy and sell Browser Fingerprints tied to our names and data. Some weak script kiddie clowns try to evade using:

There's a huge flaw in Linux, that ALL programs can see the display for ALL other programs. This means ANY software you run, can see your password manager like KeePass. Visually looking at all your KeePass entries, to know about your whole life.
Even worse, all programs share the keyboard, so it means a non-sudo program can capture the sudo password. Or even see what's going on in a sudo terminal.
Linux still has this problem a decade later. Qubes protects you against this, and that's what you should be using if you're worried about running untrusted software.
I'm not endorsing them, and I didn't audit it. But SimplifiedPrivacy claims to protect against these problems, since they create a 2nd graphical display, but it's more-so targeted at browser break-out.

Blossom is a vastly inferior product to Arweave.
They both store files, like images, in a decentralized way.
The issue is images cost money to replicate and store. Arweave solves this by programming the funds to only pay out after service. While Blossom uses Nostr key pairs and expects users to use Bitcoin.
But bitcoin has no binding contract. Therefore, Blossom is:
---Not trustless
You trust the relay won't just steal your bitcoin.
---Not as decentralized
If you can't trust the server you're paying, people will naturally gravitate to trusted nodes
---Blossom is more censored.
With Arweave you get the whole network instantly and trustlessly, but with Blossom you only get the few relays you trust to pay or host on.
---Less end-user freedom
The viewer of Blossom content is forced to pick from the poster's relays. While on Arweave, the end user picks from the entire network and can even self-host where they get content.
---Arweave is far more private.
Blossom forces you to tell many servers your IP and npub. With Arweave, the single gateway you choose or self-host knows your IP. In fact, similar to Tor, your VPN doesn't even know what content you're looking at because ALL content shares the same gateway IP.
---Arweave does entire websites
Blossom isn't designed for whole sites, it's for a jpeg meme on Nostr. While Arweave not only does whole websites, but even it's own DNS system that already works without new software. Arweave + a Nostr client would be a game-changer for images, podcasts, and even video.

Cell Towers vs WiFi.
In this wicked useful and brand spanking new post, I'm going to teach you what data is being shared from cell towers vs WiFi, and what your options to reduce that are. The end has 3 example cellphone setups for the average person, somewhat savvy, and tinfoil hat.

When you connect to cellphone towers:
You're using the modem which has an IMEI identification number. Using a DeGoogled phone and a VPN does NOT change this from revealing info about the hardware TO the TOWER, such as where it was bought. And who bought it.
There's a couple ways to deal with this. One way is to buy it in cryptocurrency, from a company like mine. This is the easiest method for most people.
A second way is to use external hotspots for service, and buy those locally in cash. For example GLinet travel routers:

(or crypto like Calyx/Tmobile depending on your country.) Some prefer this because then they can put it in a faraday bag to hide their location at home. And only take it out of the faraday bag outside their house.
A third way is to change the IMEI. This method is controversial, as some say it's stealth. Others say you're drawing attention to yourself by giving them bullshit or previous numbers.
Some devices are easier to change then others. And some countries have made it illegal to change the IMEI. Of course, I can not recommend anything illegal. But if it is legal in your country, then generally older things such as Nokias are the easiest. LunarDAO has a guide on this:

A combination of the 2nd and 3rd way can be done by using something like Blue Merle. This is software for GLiNET travel routers that changes the IMEI of the router. Then you could in theory swap different SIM cards. However, this has a high risk of potential error for a new user, and it's unclear who's audited it:

When you connect to WiFi:
You're NOT using the IMEI. Instead, you're getting a MAC address assigned to you by the router. This is a local area network. Android randomly generates MAC addresses for each connection, and you can actually see these in the settings of the WiFi connection.
In general, Android security is pretty good for WiFi. However, the CIA loves to hack routers. From the Wikileaks documents, we know they prefer to tunnel traffic from home routers directly to the CIA to see the traffic.
There's two main ways to avoid this. First, you could always use a VPN, which then bypasses the router's DNS.
Second, you could always be behind a firewall or travel router. The router's WAN port is the one communicating with a modem (public internet). While the router's LAN or (local area network) is the one giving you a MAC address.

On the layer 1, it's not money. Because when someone pays you, there's a good chance that it's mixed, and you can't bring it on an exchange. Now you're saying F the exchange, but even businesses you buy from dump on exchanges. So it creates mad tension when you pay people, and then later their funds are seized.
On the layer 2, you need $500 bucks or it's a custodial bank account. It's not logical to say it's decentralized, when there's a high barrier to entry for new people. Under high taxes, it becomes a bigger deal that these custodians can see you're not paying.
Also, if the Bitcoin Core team is selling layer 2 solutions through Blockstream, that's a conflict of interest. They profit from the failure.

Step 1. This isn't a vaccine, it's a treatment. Treatments don't stop spread.
Step 2. If it's a treatment, why do you care if I take it, only those who want it should.

Session messenger devs switched from Australia to Switzerland.
They got a dummy legal entity in Swiss, and now all stuff is legally coming out of there.
My response:
That's great, good for you. The bigger issue is the devs promised onion-routed audio calls, which they failed to deliver on after 3+ years. And now even regular audio calls don't work.
However, from a censorship aspect, Session is stronger or equal to Nostr w/ Tor relays. So I guess this Swiss move is good, but ultimately it's not solving the real issues.

How many people in the group chat? like 20 or 200?
If it's 20 people, you can try simpleX. If it's 200, you want matrix.
Are people outside the organization contacting you for support? If so, that likely rules out simpleX and nostr
Are you trying to hide the metadata? If not, could use someone else's matrix server, one of the public ones

If the purpose of Slack is to discuss business within your company internally... why do you need Nostr relays for that?
If the purpose of Nostr is censorship resistance over relays, why do you want Nostr keys without relays? Wouldn't that increase attack surface for the CIA?
Therefore, I'd recommend using existing tools like Matrix or XMPP on a self-host VPS. And NOT using some random web app

Mozilla disabled & hazed uBlock Origin Lite off Firefox's extension store
This is surprising given that Mozilla is supposed to be in favor of privacy. And it's among the most popular extensions, which then raises the question of what the purpose of Mozilla's store is.
According to the dev (Raymond Hill), they wrote pages of "baseless" complaints, including:
"For add-ons that collect or transmit user data, the user must be informed and provided with a clear and easy way to control this data collection"
Now Raymond Hill had to move it to Github for updates. As far as we can tell, the original non-lite extension remains.
