in p2p trades you can never guarantee that your counterparty isn’t listing down your bank account details (and everything that they get sent) - and, i’d even make the argument that if that’s occurring, you’re probably getting labelled as “higher risk” by those doing the tracking - because you’re going through the effort to make a p2p non-kyc trade

genuine question - what’s wrong with storing an encrypted seed phrase in the cloud?
assuming that the key used to encrypt the file is strong (like 20+ characters, mix of character types, and never stored anywhere else)

i still haven’t opened any lightning channels on my own node because i don’t really feel like i have a good enough handle on the whole process
all i would really use my node for is buying non-kyc sats over lightning (and then maybe the occasional spend here and there as i find things worth spending some sats on)
i know i’ll need mostly inbound liquidity (because as i buy non-kyc sats they’ll need to be sent to me)
and then i’m pretty sure that as i draw down on that inbound liquidity, it’ll become outbound liquidity, and once it gets to a large enough amount (enough to justify the on-chain transaction) i can use a “loop-out” to get those lightning sats back on-chain (and then also “replenish” my inbound liquidity at the same time)
but, this is a whole lot of effort, and it feels like there’s a huge amount that could go wrong in the process 🤔
i haven’t even mentioned all the other factors like force closures, keeping proper backups, watchtowers, privacy, etc, etc
any suggestions?

i’ve gone through the “gruelling” process of setting my own bitcoin raspberry pi node up from scratch, all on ubuntu server (i.e. completely over ssh) - had a lot of help from the “ministry of nodes” tutorial series (just search that up on youtube if you’re curious)
but, all this lightning network stuff is a lot newer, and has a fair bit more complexity to it than meets the eye (at least for me) - i’ve just been asking questions here, and nice people like @npub1dtc…m357 have been helping me out 👍🏼
i just wanna buy non-KYC sats weekly over robosats through my own node 😅

yeah okay, so it feels like a good plan might be to open a 1.5M channel with someone like lnbig (to get some instant inbound)
then, that gives me one channel at least, so i can do a LN+ offer for 1.5M but now i can set a one channel minimum on the offer and participate
then i should have two 1.5M inbounds and one 1.5M outbound
and then hopefully buying some no-KYC sats weekly utilises the channel enough to have it not get closed
and if i run out of inbound i’ll probably just loop-out on-chain so i can store the sats in cold storage anyway
how much do you know about channel closing? is it a risk to get it closed on me? and should i be taking backups, along with running a watchtower, or doing like a watchtower swap or something?

gotcha, i guess the goal of my node was never to be a profitable routing node, i just wanted to be using the lightning network, but doing so in a self sovereign manner (i.e. using my own node)
essentially just want to have one, or a few, well connected channels for mostly receiving non-KYC sats over the lightning network (so majority inbound liquidity), and maybe the occasional spend if there’s something cool i can buy using light i g
but, i’m asking all these questions because i want to understand the process for:
(a) initially getting mostly inbound liquidity from well connected, stable nodes that won’t close on me, and
(b) when the inbound liquidity is eventually exhausted (and i’m left with only outbound liquidity), what’s the best way for me to regain mostly inbound liquidity, and send the now already stacked sats to cold storage (on-chain)
sounds like my best scenario would be to make a LN+ offer (with no barrier to entry so i can participate), hope that others participating are decently connected nodes, then begin receiving sats using my inbound liquidity, and then if i exhaust my inbound then i should utilise a “loop out” service where i sent some sats to a lightning address (using outbound, but gaining inbound), and then the loop out service sends me those sats on-chain, which i then put into cold storage?
is my thinking approximately right?

i think what people often instantly get wrong when thinking about libertarianism (0% tax, no gov, etc) is that at the first mention of these ideas they assume that the libertarian doesn’t appreciate the systems and services that are currently provided by government (and funded by taxes)
libertarians (as far as i can speak for all libertarians, which is not very far), i’d argue, still very much value all of these “common” goods and services
i think most would agree that water, electricity, defence, money, etc. are very important goods and services
it’s just that the libertarian believes that, it’s not just possible, that these systems can operate outside of government rein / state control, but that it’s the vastly superior option
(because the best system flourishes in a voluntary environment where life, liberty and property are respected)
imo libertarianism simply runs counter to any sort of coercive control, or any sort of involuntary system
(but, i’m no expert in these matters)

i’ve wanted to use LN+ to open my initial lightning channels, so that way i get an outbound and inbound channel connection for being part of a liquidity triangle - but, i have no connections and no liquidity through my node atm, and most of the offers have decently high barriers to entry
i could try make my own i think, but i might introduce issues by getting into a liquidity triangle with two nodes that have no connections as well 😅
the rebalancing tools are interesting, but (from my understanding) that only really works if you have multiple channels (and you have to have available liquidity across those other channels)

yes, you need inbound liquidity in order to be sent sats through your lightning channels
so when you establish a channel it’s usually 100% outbound capacity, so you can send those sats OUT from that channel
as you spend, and send those sats OUT, they then become inbound capacity (and can be sent back IN your direction)
but there are some services like Loop and Boltz where you can “switch” your outbound capacity to inbound
i think you essentially send your sats to some lightning address (giving you inbound capacity), and then they send you those sats (minus some fee) back to some on-chain address
unsure exactly how this allllll works (i’m still figuring it out), but it should be roughly correct

can someone explain simply all the possible ways that managing your lightning channel could result in you losing a portion of the Bitcoin that you have locked up in that channel?
- i heard forced closures can be expensive, and especially in high fee environments?
- i heard that if your node is offline that someone can force close, and then present an outdated channel state that benefits them?
- if you mismanage your liquidity (maybe make your channel too small) then you can essentially lock up that Bitcoin because it’s not worth paying the fee to even close the channel?
- anything else?
and what would be all the different methods / best practices for protecting against any of these potential loss of funds?

ahhhh i always thought of bluewallet as custodial (maybe because it defaults to custodial lightning), so i never actually considered it a viable privacy option - sounds like i need to revisit that tho
i’m just trying to take a lot of privacy focused steps with my setup - and i just want to make sure that the app would never accidentally connect to the public node (instead of your own node that you configured), and then it sort of “leaks” what addresses you’re wallet is watching
maybe i have that all wrong, but that’s why i liked zeus because it just doesn’t work if it doesn’t find a connection to your own node (which i like)
but yeah, sounds like i need to do a bit of research around running blue wallet in a sovereign manner 🤔

i’ve heard some mixed opinions about wasabi’s mixing process, but i’m unsure if there’s any substance to those claims - if i was to step outside of whirlpool i’d probably try JAM (joinmarket) because that seems pretty gooooood
i think there’s a bit of a question mark next to wasabi and JAM around mixing constantly into the exact same liquidity (where as that’s less / not possible in whirlpool)

okay, so i spent awhile trying to wrap my head around lightning liquidity, and i need someone to check if i’m correct here:
if i wanted to purchase ~$100 p/week in non-KYC BTC over the lightning network (using Robosats), and then maybe when the balance hits like ~$1500 i’d probably want to move these funds on-chain, mix them, then send to cold storage
now, to do this i think i need to establish a channel with a well connected node and that channel would need about $1500 of inbound liquidity (and i’d probably want to keep maybe $500 in outbound liquidity too, just in case i wanted to spend on lightning more generally)
then, as i buy non-KYC BTC i’ll have that liquidity move from inbound to outbound, to the point where after 15-weeks i’ll have no inbound and entirely outbound liquidity in this lightning channel
what then? i would want to rebalance this channel, so i’d have to use an option like “loop” or “boltz”, where i would send all my outbound liquidity back over the channel, this would switch my $1500 of outbound liquidity to $1500 of inbound liquidity, right?
and then, with these “loop” and “boltz” services they would then send me the equivalent of $1500 on chain BTC to compensate me for moving all my outbound liquidity over (taking some 1% fee or whatever in the process)
then i just rinse and repeat the process?
seems like when they add “splicing” (resizing channels) it would be a bit simpler
i.e. when all the inbound becomes outbound then i can just create a movement for all the outbound to move on chain, and at the same time i can throw some more liquidity into the outbound to refresh it

yeah, i just watched that entire video, it looks a little more complicated than sparrow / whirlpool, nice UI, but it’s not as simple as like pay one fee and wait - sort of seems like you have to keep making transactions, and keep paying that fee
i think i just need to become a bit more comfortable with the fee structure and i’ll be all good though
when he looks at the outputs it’s interesting how they aren’t all the same value, there’s a mix of matching values
i did a quick search on samourai twitter to see what they mention about joinmarket (because they usually don’t beat around the bush when it comes to criticising shit)
they seem to place it below whirlpool but above samaurai, almost feels like their opinion might be “if you’re not going to whirlpool, probably should use joinmarket”
i think the only concern my simple brain could make sense of was that joinmarket reuses liquidity, so i think whirlpool is waiting for fresh liquidity to remix, but joinmarket you could technically be mixing with the same handful people over and over, so it’s not seen really as a gain to the anonymity set
could be completely wrong there tho, that was just what i could gather from a quick look, i’ll keep looking

Yep, similar experience as above. I’ve had it sitting there trying to remix for like the better part of a week and the most mixes a UTXO has is two (2).
I’m guessing it’s a liquidity problem?
I know you get decent privacy gains just after a single mix, but I was I do feel like a 10+ would feel a lot better, at this rate I wouldn’t even have 10 mixes after like two months 🤨

this is a very basic question, but only utxo’s can be KYC’d, right?
so you could send a bunch of KYC’d utxo’s to a wallet, but then send non-KYC’d utxo’s to the same wallet, and as long as you never combined the utxo’s then the non-KYC utxo’s would remain non-KYC’d, right?
or, are the receive addresses you generate from your wallet able to be linked to one another? is this why protecting your xpub is so important?

did it all through just following the docs and figuring it all out 😎

personally disagree that a block size increase would constitute a solution, the problem would still exist that someone with money to burn could fill blocks (just 4MB or 15MB instead of closer to 2MB)
i think the fee market should solve this problem naturally (hopefully) - you’d think on-chain token folks will eventually run out of money to burn on fees, and they’ll run out of buyers for their hot potatoes
time will tell if that’s the correct take
but, assuming the “storm passes” it’s still a very great example of what technically needs to be thought about and solved creatively - i’m naive in this space, but i saw something the other day about excess fees for transactions where transaction costs are some amount larger than the value being transferred
not saying that’s the solution, because i’m sure there are a bucket of unintended consequences with that (and i probably didn’t even understand it properly) - but, my point is more that once this hopefully passes it’s definitely something we should all be thinking about from all the possible angles
and, my point with my original post, is i think this is a problem that plagues xmr and ltc too (even if it hasn’t shown itself yet, it seems like it’s something to think about at least)

honest question - how would xmr (or ltc, or whatever) deal with a similar situation to what btc is dealing with right now?
essentially, there are entities paying more in fees relative to the value that they are sending (no matter the why, that’s essentially the network outcome)
so, if a protocol doesn’t restrict this behaviour (i.e. it allows people to pay excess fees relative to value sent) then this will always be possible, no matter the network, right?
if i had a bucket of money and i just wanted to waste it, i could continue to send fractions of xmr or ltc back and forth
i’d have no incentives to “mint tokens” on these networks, but it seems like the same process is possible on other networks, it just maybe lacks the incentives of “minting coins”
am i missing something?

weird that they’d just flat out stop supporting 12 word seed phrases without having some amount of backwards compatibility, or some sort of conversion of some sort? 🤨
i don’t have any direct xmr experience yet - but, they did mention on the podcast that the hard-forks (and such) are good for keeping up with the latest privacy developments, but they do come with a trade-off of backwards comparability (amongst other things)

i just listened to a pretty great podcast that talked about xmr
it wasn’t trying to shill anything, it was just talking from a very high-level about its origin, history, how it works, how it differs from btc, etc.
i learned a lot, and the main takeaway for me seemed to be that, until lightning network is private by default, then your “best option” in terms of privacy is probably spend using xmr
doesn’t mean you can’t achieve the same privacy on bitcoin, but i think it’s just a matter of effort and room for error - xmr seems to give you a pretty good level of privacy with relatively low effort, and less room for error
the tl;dr seemed to be: save in bitcoin, but spend in xmr (for now)
thoughts?

it must output it’s % progress by number of blocks, because if got to 40-50% real quick, but now has taken like an entire day to get to 65% 🤣
raspberry pi 4 isn’t that powerful tho, so makes sense

yeah my gf and were in our last rental for two years, but when our lease came up, the owners sold, and we got stuck in the tightest fucking rental market ever
i’m keen on buying, just trying to find something in the right area, right price, right size, etc.
i’d rather a shit place that needs some love that’s in a good location

yeah, i’ve had a stable relationship for nearly four years now, and we need our own place to make the next steps in our life i reckon
i’ve been using this tool called mortgage.monster where you can put in a view of rates expectations and property value (it doesn’t let you put inflation expectations in though)
but even under extremely shit conditions (persistent 5% rates that fall to 3% in 5 years, and a 25% drop in property market followed by sub-1% growth for 30 years) it still seems like you’d build your equity up with time
inflation can obviously make a massive impact over that sort of time period, but there’s not much you can do about that
feels like in almost all cases i’m probably better off just biting the bullet, buying, building equity - didn’t used to be the case when renting was cheaper, but certainly feels like buying sets you better off now (especially if you want to build a family which i do)

So, it it actually impossible to know how much xmr is circulating all around the place? Is it impossible to know how much value is being settled on the xmr network?
From the Bitcoin perspective I think it’s pretty cool that you can sort of view how much value was moved in each block (i.e. like “value settled” on the bitcoin blockchain).
I wonder how much “daily value” is being transferred across / settled on the xmr blockchain (relative to the bitcoin blockchain) 🤨 is that even possible to determine due to the xmr privacy enhancements?

genuine question - what are the large differences between xmr and bitcoin?
does it boil down to xmr has much better privacy tech (by virtue of it being almost its entire focus), compared to bitcoin where you have to jump through some hoops to gain privacy (so it’s more-so an issue of effort)?
or, is there truly some amazing privacy protections in xmr that just will never be possible in bitcoin (without a hard fork), and there’s no real soft fork alternative functionality?

i’ve never wanted to sign up to anything, so i’ve just been using phind(dot)com
essentially it acts as a better, more tailored search engine for me, pretty much assisted in helping me setup my rpi4 bitcoin core node “the hard way” (i.e. completely over SSH using Ubuntu Core)
i’ve been getting it to explain to me what all the different parameters in the bitcoin.conf that people tell you to set in their guides, are actually doing
but when something doesn’t make clear / direct sense i’m almost always googling it to confirm (i.e. doing a bit of my own research to double check)
for me, it’s just a waaaaay better search engine essentially

i live in a pretty small place (as far as cities go), it’s not a small-small town, but it’s only 100k population spread out across quite a massive area
there’s still a few 800-1000 sqm blocks / established homes floating around the place, which i think would be ideal for myself and my future family
i can buy something established that needs some work for $450k if i’m lucky and find a good deal
i’ve always hated debt which is predominantly why i was asking this question to begin with, but it’s a bit of a stalemate situation
rent is ridiculous atm ($500+ AUD per week is the median here), so you can’t really save all that much while having to pay that (especially while i’m the sole income earner)
but then repayments on a home loan would be about the same for a $500k-ish home with interest rates where they currently are
but then it’s difficult to feel settled enough to start a family when you don’t own your home, or have stable living conditions (last rental we were in just sold at the end of the lease term, so we couldn’t resign, so forced back into competing in the tight rental market)
i’m stacking as much bitcoin as i can, so we’ll see where that gets me 👍🏼 (i’m just conscious that i’ll probably have to pull the trigger on purchasing a home some time in the next couple years so i can start building a family)

how do you cope with being in the immeasurable amount of debt?
i want a house so bad, but the $600k minimum debt, getting shafted by arbitrary rate rises, and if the house prices shits the bed when you’re like minimum 80% leveraged - not good
but renting and not owning is so shit, and it’s currently blocking me moving forwards in life

i’m no expert, but studied statistics in uni, so occasionally i can know a thing or two - my take:
not a lot of people know about the “AI Winter” which was a period in the 1970’s where out of the hype of the 1960’s everyone thought it would only be a handful of years before artificial general intelligence (AGI) will be doing everything and anything
hype died down, funding died down, projects abandoned, etc.
same thing happened in the late 80’s and early 90’s too
this is not to say chatGPT isn’t really fucking cool, and that it’s not going to be extremely useful and valuable
clearly it will be, you just have to use it to figure that out, even if it just improves search and learning it’ll be a masssivvve win
BUT, i think it will be very good in some specific domains, then everyone will think that means it will be very good in all domains, but then we’ll discover that it’s still just not up to scratch in some areas
the cool part (i think) is that this process helps shine a light on things that are inherently and distinctly human, and a lot more complex to solve than it would initially seem at face value
i could of course be entirely wrong, and the future AI overlords will roast me for writing this message at some point in the future 🤣

hmmm but where do i actually get their keys from?
the link on the bitcoincore.org website guide for the builder keys is broken, so it seems like they've moved / changed that .txt file in the repo

i had a look around and i found these:

#[1] oh my fucking god i finally figured it out, so simple in hindsight it fkn hurts 🤣😭
so Ubuntu Server uses netplan, so you can just go into the .yaml and add the SSID / password where the other working SSID / password already was
i knew that, so i was already doing that, BUT
my password is the same across my 2.4GHz and my 5GHz network, so i just copy and pasted the password hash thinking it was the same fuxking thing, BUT
wpa password hashing takes the SSID as a fkn input too, which i did not know, so the same password, but used on a different network name (i.e. different SSID), actually gives a completely different hash for the password
makes complete sense, should have fucking realised it earlier
and you can get the correct hash by just going into your shell and punching in:
wpa_passphrase “yourSSID” “yourPASSWORD”

hmmm i’ll have a tinker around with it after work today
when i used “sudo iw dev wlan0 scan | grep SSID” (to scan for networks that my pi4 could see) the 5GHz was showing up
but it was just on attempt to actually connect to it that it all went pear shaped
i’ll try see if it’ll connect to the 5GHz on boot if in my netplan .yaml i put the 5GHz network first (not second)
if that works then i at least know it’s possible to connect to it, and 100% know that all the credentials are correct, and it’s just a matter of figuring out how to properly switch the networks while SSH’d into the pi4

how do you handle multiple wifi connections on a Ubuntu Server os that’s running on a rpi4?
i’ve configured it to connect to my 2.4GHz network successfully on boot, but then i’ve added the 5GHz network to my netplan .yaml, ran the netplan apply, and then i go to switch to that network “wpa_cli -i wlan0 select_network 1”
but it just hangs there (i.e. doesn’t successfully connect), and then i’m forced to manually reboot my rpi4 in order to get it back onto the 2.4GHz network so i can SSH into it again

so if you have flashed Ubuntu Server to an sd card, booted from it on your rpi 4, but now you want to install Ubuntu Server onto your SSD that’s attached over USB storage, here’s what you do:
- wget “url.to.ubuntu.server.img”
- extract that file using “xz -d”
- use “sudo dd if= of= …” to flash the .img to your SSD (/dev/sda)
- mount the boot drive (probably /dev/sda1)
- then use “sudo cp” to copy the “meta-data”, “user-data” and “network-config” files FROM your sd card boot drive TO your currently mounted SSD boot drive
- then “sudo umount -l /dev/sda1” to unmount the SSD boot drive
- “sudo shutdown -h now” to shutdown the rpi 4
- unplug power from rpi4, remove sd card, and then power it on
- it should then boot directly from the SSD and then automatically use those files you copied over to preconfigure (i.e. “seed”) your os with the same wifi / SSD details that you used when you flashed the os to your sd card
so now you should be able to “ssh user@hostname”, then provide your password, and you should be running your fresh install of Ubuntu Server from your SSD!!
(“lsblk” to confirm)

you need three (3) main files to be present on your boot drive (/boot/firmware):
- user-data
- meta-data
- network-config
and the best part is, provided you want to use the exact same config that you used when flashing the os to your sd card, then those files ALREADY EXIST on the sd card boot drive!!
