Not even taking a side either way, while this of course over time helps with the dollars of taxes you pay(assuming it’s structured reasonably) this creates an absolute nightmare of complex calculations and tracking that you have to do and carry over literally forever, including your descendants. An ever growing number of accountants, lawyers, and bureaucrats would be hired in this scenario for a net overall loss to society.
So in summation, I think this sounds good the the surface, but is actually not a solution.

At least in America software licenses and according property rights are well established. If it’s open source(which nostr is) this concern is mitigated. Nostr is also a protocol, not proprietary SaaS product run by a company, so it’s very different there too. This would be like saying Linux is the personal private property of Linus Torvalds.

Okay got it. So say I have a CLN lightning node on an Umbrel or Start9. That I get and think I did correctly. Totally separated from the lightning node you need an on chain address to sign that message. I guess that concept is where I’m struggling. Why do you need a separate wallet from the CLN node?

Ultimately there’s no fair or freedom oriented way to do it that I can think of. Maybe the closest thing is if you commit a violent crime or a non violent crime of sufficient impact (steal $10B or something) you lose your right to vote as you’ve shown you are a threat to society by a jury of your peers beyond a reasonable doubt.
However, down this path you end up doing some sort of “purity” test to see if people are more long term or short term oriented and that is hugely flawed and problematic at best. Yes kids are a maybe a half decent proxy of more long term orientation, but there’s plenty of shitty parents and honest people without kids. It’s not a strong enough indicator to take away someone’s fundamental natural rights imo.
The problem of too many people being too short term biased is very real but it’s easy to get to a state where the cure is worse than the disease. Everything I’ve seen on this topic falls under that category to me: would just make it worse.

Start9 currently at least has manual backups that are easy. Umbrel currently has basically no backups unless you go into each app individually on the CLI(not practical).
There isn’t a great automated backup solution right now that I’m aware of, but it’s on Start9’s roadmap.
If you need automated backups as a hard requirement I’d probably use Voltage.

SAYING THE QUIET PART OUT LOUD: BITCOIN WITHOUT COVENANTS HAS NO WORKABLE SOLUTION FOR FULLY SELF CUSTODIAL SMALL PAYMENTS AND HODLing. I love the Block team and they’re making reasonable trade offs on the Bitkey for a totally noob user with small funds. In the Bitkey model effectively you have two hot keys (phone and key server) which is a big trade off even if it’s source viewable (it is not FOSS), and your hardware wallet has no screen so you could easily approve a transfer to an address other than you intended if someone has hijacked your phone and what appears on its screen. The Bitkey is a $150 glorified yubikey. This is fine for noobs and small amounts, I would not trust with large amounts. It’s great for mitigating some basic theft and loss of key scenarios, but beyond that is quite limited. Hopefully in future iterations we get FROST and other enhancements.

I’d just flip the framing and ask why do you expect him to work for you for free? For folks who have been around a while and want to use Nostr regularly I’m guessing paid relays will be the primary way forward. Start9 on a start9 purchased device. If you have a rasberry pi it doesn’t surprise me if lightning doesn’t work well(especially as you add and actively run more and more apps). Would strongly recommend using at least an Intel NUC style device with an SSD, and I think buying an actual start9 device is also a great way to support the project.

Hmm weird. I’ve never tried with RTL so I cannot speak to that. I’ve only used the CLN app itself, which to be fair is fairly basic. The default CLN app has never had a hiccup though beyond one freeze, though I think that was a hardware issue.

Have you tried on Start9 or Umbrel? Besides one freeze scaring me since CLN uses the hsm secret rather than a typical seed phrase(which imo wasn’t a real issue since it just needed a restart and was never truly in danger), I’ve never had an issue with CLN.
