Zen are very good. Probably not the cheapest but their support is excellent. - they were really good for my Dad when he needed much help. Good options also for the tech competent e.g. if you want a PTR record to your own domain or IPV6, and support staff understand the technology with someone who understands much more detailed requirements.

I did this in the late nineties when coax cable broadband only supported a single network connected device, and things have improved much since then. I've played around with a Busybox matchbox sized personal VPN router more recently.

@nprofile…ut88 A way to get paid to develop free software is to find an employer that needs to put it into its products e.g. webcams, routers or server based services. Some employers e.g. Saxonica build businesses around selling software support to corporate customer which depend on software for high value production systems customers need top level support for. I open sourced the educational software I wrote because why not ? It supported my academic job, so I was paid for its development time in relation to the classes I taught which it supported.

@nprofile…hl5m Had one like that in mid December. The fever tends to last 2-3 days. After that recovery can require very much more rest. I couldn't sing in choir, and struggled through Christmas and early January. Still not back to full strength but heading in the right direction, got my voice back and can do long walks again. Whatever you do, don't try to get back to full speed too soon, that way can lie serious post viral malaise - I've seen such in a few friends and relatives (mostly female), who still need massive support many years later.

@nprofile…u3ks To use a VPN securely, you don't want the client to leak the DNS queries it is making without these going through the VPN. So the client config probably doesn't allow that. But if the client can't do a DNS lookup to find the VPN server then it can't find the server. So it's better for the client config to give the IP address of the VPN server, so the VPN server can resolve the client's DNS queries.

For my home built electrical/electronic controllers I house these in fairly small plastic lidded boxes sold for domestic storage, with as strong and slightly flexible plastic as possible. One of these has an inkbird temperature mains controller for beer brewing. Another houses a motor controller and switch able to adjust power to and reverse an ex washing machine motor which mechanises an apple mill for cider making via a belt drive. Another is an experimental Peltier effect electric refrigeration unit. It's worth using as strong plastic boxes as you can get for durability in processing areas, and electrical safety.

Current driver licensing law is based on the assumption that driver training has to be entirely 1 to 1 with a human instructor in a real car in real traffic so is an expensive imposition. Use of online courses and testing and simulators would reduce the cost of upping training standards and of basic driver training.
I would welcome doing a short online course and passing a simulator exam before my UK license is considered good for a country with different signage and conventions, e.g. driving on the right side of the road instead of the left. If this could prevent just one death like that of Harry Dunn it needs consideration.

Tunnelling over a TCP connection oriented protocol is never going to be as fast as using a datagram protocol, especially when you end up with TCP implementations fighting with each other. Reason for doing that is if you're inside a firewall which doesn't allow other kinds of internal client to talk to servers outside e.g. allowing DNS and HTTPS connections only. I've obtained much better performance with relatively easy setup from multiple client OS's using Wireguard VPNs hosted on my own cloud VMs. See also DNS tunnelling.

Yes. Also if name resolution is done via a VPN, you would want to be confident the VPN client is active and fully functional before the local DNS resolver starts. So he VPN client needs to establish a route with the VPN server without using DNS, in other words the VPN client needs to configure the IP address of the VPN server, not its domain name.

If DNS resolution privacy matters more than performance, you will make different choices about this than if performance matters more than privacy. If you need to use a VPN for privacy reasons, then you probably want to test that your DNS queries aren't bypassing this setup.

I used to do more SSH over X to run applications remotely displaying locally but don't need to do that now.

I'm more confident in this ecosystem when I know I can drop Linux at the kernel level, plug in a BSD kernel and reasonably expect most other things to work as expected. I'd expect I'd have fewer problems doing just that on cloud servers compared to desk/lap tops where fewer devices might have BSD support.

Freedom of speech is never absolute.
Adverts for accommodation discriminating against races and nationalities were common in the UK of my childhood. These signs weren't "free speech" though racists claimed they were. Such expressions were adversely affecting the safety needs of marginalised people, and so rebalancing was required on that one. Same goes for hate speech and incitement.
Where the boundary lies will change with time, as our history tells us, and the boundary will always be contested when it does change.

A long time ago, an early Linux box in my home running Sendmail and Majordomo with some hacks to cause modem dialup to occur automatically at least 4x daily, used a Demon Internet connection which delivered email by SMTP. It used to sing to me before it downloaded, replicated and distributed emails sent to lists I ran for what were then a few social networks. I was asked once why my lists took a few hours to send messages on to members. One of my list members attempted a 9Mb attachment, and the effect was analogous to an elephant stuck in a revolving door until I got it out of the system. This was replaced when Linux virtual machines became commercially available at sensible prices, on what was then not yet called "the cloud".

The system errors and remote manipulations comprising this scandal could not have occurred so untraceably in a system properly designed with concurrency, transactional integrity and auditability in mind, based on the Clark Wilson model and audited on that basis. My view is that had the defence lawyers been better informed, the wrong convictions could not have occurred or stood for so long.
The banking industry seem generally to have got this kind of data integrity issue under reasonably control, sometimes at the cost of service outages. If they didn't we'd be hearing more complaints.

Manufacturers do release both WLTP range and KWh battery capacity numbers for EVs e.g. my Hyundai Kona has a WLTP range of 280 miles from 64KWh and this involves a standard measurement. So fuel economy is available in a standard way. That said, I don't know whether anyone maintains an API suitable for looking this up automatically based on manufacturer and model e.g. as held on the DVLA record. That would be useful to have.

CO2/mile emissions are a generalisation also, depending on driving style, but I don't see that as a reason why the application isn't of interest. The DVLA data it now covers also only covers tailpipe emissions also. I'm well aware that generating the electricity for my car involves the decreasing proportion of natural gas power the now mostly zero carbon UK grid (AI: "125 grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂/kWh) on average, which was the lowest in four years. This was a 34% decrease from 2021, when the average was 188 gCO₂/kWh"), so isn't yet zero CO2. I think a reasonably good generalisation of that could also technically be included if you have sufficient time & interest.

The latter are expected to go down each year for a similar new car, as the energy used in manufacture gets more renewable each year. Brake lining wear is also much less for EVs due to regenerative braking.

Not very difficult to extract the IPs from fail2ban every minute and add them to /etc/hosts.deny using a cronjob and shell script if that helps.
As I don't log this output to email, there's no noise to annoy me until I take an interest to ensure fail2ban is doing what I configured it to do.

fail2ban runs on BSD according to this reference. On Debian Bookworm and previous I've found it easy enough to install and run in sshd password guessing lockout mode and let it do what it does without worrying about it too much. Worth checking logs and where it shows activity in banning bad addresses after installation and occasionally thereafter.

The more heavily used pages are likely to be more reliable than very infrequently used or edited pages. Prior to my retirement a few years ago I often referred students to high quality computing science articles there as starting points and encouraged students to follow up the references in these pages themselves.

That's funny, I don't think it's currently used. Perhaps a DNS B record could usefully reference a freely allocated unique phone number, perhaps a number obtained using a cryptographically secure hash from the domain name, and which would be acceptable for using Whatsapp or Telegram type services without it needing to be a real paid for phone number.

@nprofile…x759 I've just been through as much of the OFCOM OSA risk assessment requirement as I currently understand this for a small community marketplace site where users mostly know each other. For our purpose it seems way OTT, but I wanted to know more about the OSA anyway. One takeaway is we would have to review it again if we wanted under 18s to be able to open accounts - currently we don't have any and this hasn't been requested, but the effect would be a bit chilling in this sense, e.g. if we'd have to take down adverts for 2nd hand crafting tools because a collection of such might include a knife. We're very low risk as we know our users. Being contactable for complaints and being able to take down offending content seem to meet the main requirements from our perspective.

Having to do this isn't ideal, but I'd rather spend a couple of hours a year doing this than risk prosecution by not answering a few questions and being presented with risk issues I already know about. I've got evidence of due diligence as a consequence, and didn't have to identify the site. Given the low risk of bad guys using site introduction to exploit vulnerable adults, I'd rather do the due diligence than risk negligence on a safeguarding issue anyway,

It's the torture that should be stopped, regardless of starting and ending personal states intended, as it's not the job of liberal democracies to privilege between reasonably held personal states, and any so called therapy involving such torture needs to be banned regardless of the nature of the intended conversion.

I don't have current BSD experience, but in principle, jailing any process denies it access to dynamic resources present on parts of the filesystem you've denied it access to.
You may need to recompile/link to use statically linked binaries within the jail to fix that one.
Another issue may concern whether your jail tech restricts the networking API e.g. via local sockets or system calls.

Yes, I'm aware the Coventry City of Culture 2021 isn't the best hook for my ideas on the best reference I currently have any more. You're response has given me motivation to give that site an edit to make it more current.
Interestingly Coventry LETS (one of the references there) has restarted after a 10 year gap as participants got too old. You can't keep a good idea down. The money-tax system we have is a human construct. Other options are demonstrably available. Real change needs a movement, not just an old guy with a vision for it or a few weirdos who play trading games using made up money of our own construction, issue and account, and home made goods. We need younger visionaries, activists, hackers, influencers, entrepreneurs and politicians than just yours truly to take grassroots-led social transformation forward fuller steam ahead.

@nprofile…t4qe I'd guess the Bourne shell on BSD is more feature full than the Bourne shell I learned (and taught) in pre-Linux Unix (Solaris, Domain OS etc. days). My memory of the value of the history builtin postdates exposure to Linux and Unix CAD/CAM workstations being replaced by Windows in the nineties.
Your bug fix may be narrowed by seeing if the problem can be replicated in bash (can't see why bash wouldn't compile easily on BSD). Developing your own minimal command shell in 'C' is a useful learning experience, as you'll need to learn about fork(), wait(), chdir(), environment pointers, and the exec() family of system calls.

@nprofile…t4qe The history command is a bash builtin, meaning its functionality is part of the bash shell, and isn't an external program or process. If on your operating system, /bin/sh isn't bash, the history command may work differently from how it works in bash.

If we don't need to justify use of clothes, curtains or envelopes, then we don't need to justify use of cryptography, VPNs or onion routing either. Privacy is about politeness and decency and if you use clothes, curtains and envelopes this says nothing about whether or not you have anything to hide.
Modern web browsers which warn users about unencrypted connections were doing it right once free website certificates became available.

My son experimented with BSD Unix a while back. Open Source works well due to competition in all software categories, so I'm glad Linux isn't the only game in town.
I advised a friend to install BSD as a virtual machine to get some experience with its firewall to prepare for a contractor job interview which resulted in his getting useful paid work. I used it myself very productively, going back to the late eighties and early nineties, when administrating a room full of Sun workstations.
The Linux tools and applications I regularly use now seem very similar and compile much the same, and perhaps now are a little more familiar to me in relation to some of the changes, e.g. systemd v sysvinit. The differences for users mainly seem to be kernel interfacing and management issues.
So if I were to run BSD Unix e.g. on a cloud server instance to support VPNs or a standalone web application, what would I be able to do with it better that doesn't work as well on Linux ?

@npub1g97…ynm9 I've made some recent progress with Wireguard. First time I've done any VPN work for 12 years or so, when I setup an OpenVPN tunnel and was able to telnet over it point to point.
My initial Wireguard efforts struggled a bit with routing, but a few day's persistence has now paid off. I think it's a much better approach than OpenVPN.

I first used Linux when a student loaned me a Red Hat 3.0.3 CD - version released 1 May 1996 according to Wikipedia - and I booted it and was soon able to get it doing useful stuff in text mode, including running some of my shell scripts developed on Solaris.
Have made much use of it since on all classes of device from embedded routers to NAS, to desktops/laptops, mobile phones and cloud servers.

I still use mutt for transactional emails from my own systems. But text/plain is getting impossible to have a threaded conversation with due to MUAs mangling increasingly many characters in different ways. The other trend is having to support more devices including phones etc. So the only MUA I now support for other email users of my server is Roundcube. Webmail is less problematic than trying to stay up to date with all the configuration options of different direct on device MUAs .

Most devices still on 3G are 2G capable. If there's an economic case for freeing frequencies on channels which have few current users of rapidly ageing and obsoleting devices, switching off 3G first will brick fewer devices, giving those still using the 2G frequencies more notice to upgrade dependent devices and services.

Question of whether you're running your own email server. DNSBLs are the way to go if you are, Spamhaus' being the best, but you need an account so they know where the requests are coming from - free for low use servers. I get 20x more mail blocked from spammers based on Spamhaus' blocklist than I block using my local mop up list.
Gmail have mostly good senders, but some spammers get on, and I don't want to block the good senders who use google's mail infrastructure.

I do care and maintain my own IP address level blacklist, using TinyDNS and Postfix. In Postfix I have a
reject_rbl_client bl.mail.example.com
directive, for the private DNSBL IP list I maintain, and a few others public DNSBLs including using a Spamhaus account.
I don't block gmail at the IP address level even though I could, but do follow their abuse reporting guidelines, as that reduces false positives.

Unlikely to compete against battery electric vehicles for surface transport for reasons of thermodynamic law constraints no amount of R&D will overcome.

@npub1hjx…8t0w We can fantasise that those on the west side of the pond will have the honour to regularise spelling with conventions used by those of us on the east side, whose country has the same name as the joint language more widely used, but we can live with our little differences. My partner as a professional proof reader is well aware of many more detailed publishing standards convention differences than the spelling conventions much more widely known about.
