Some people asked me more about the hard-coded censorship I had to introduce. This was about PeerTube videos concerning YouTube downloaders.
Their account made searches and sent me screenshots. Yes, this is absurd, it was like censoring a browser because you can find the same results.
For donations, this is because I had to use their system so they can take 30% off each donation.
As people suggested to me, I replied by invoking GDPR and their obligations about it. I will keep you informed.

Did you know that to be available on Google, I had to:

- Hard-coded censorship
- Create a dedicated account so they can log into it
I am really upset by this difference in strictness, where I am stuck.
This cost a lot of energy because they made everything simple for the end user but not for the devs.

Currently, #PeerTube links open in the browser instead of the app. The next release of #Fedilab will fix this and improve playback: the video is attached to the message with its preview, and the player supports m3u8 (HLS).

I added a note about LLM usage in the #FediHood README, and I also made things clearer in the contributing guide. Using an LLM is OK as long as a human reviews the code and fully understands what it does. No vibe-coding.
Being transparent matters on a project, to avoid disappointing people who contributed.

Honestly, I checked the FEPs before and didn't see one about Matrix, otherwise I would have looked into it more deeply.
As for my choice, I stayed on the Signal double ratchet mainly for forward secrecy: a compromised key should not open the history.

I often see that question about the way I use #E2EE over #ActivityPub.
#FediHood and #HolosSocial do not use the end-to-end encryption #Mastodon is working on. They are going for MLS over ActivityPub. I use the Signal Protocol, already working between Holos and FediHood, which I both maintain. Once MLS is available, I'll happily switch.
But to be clear: it works perfectly with the Signal Protocol. The switch would only be for compatibility.

It's still in beta. I added a Mastodon-compatible API so existing apps can connect, but that only gets you the generic parts. What makes FediHood worth using, nearby posts by city and topic channels, has no equivalent in the Mastodon API. An app that does not implement it will work, but it misses the point of the project. That part needs contributions from app developers.

In the browser, in IndexedDB (one store per account), kept encrypted with a non-extractable AES-GCM key, and wiped on logout. The server only ever sees public keys and encrypted messages, never private keys.

The Signal Protocol (i.e. the encryption itself) is an open, documented spec with open libraries (libsignal). I use the protocol, not Signal's API or servers.

Small clarification: FediHood is fully a web app, like other Fediverse software (Mastodon, Pleroma, etc.). I reused the work I did on HolosSocial, which already used the Signal Protocol.

#FediHood should be easy to use, with a very simple interface. It fully uses #ActivityPub and is compatible with the #Mastodon API (tested with #Fedilab). It will of course bring extra endpoints related to how it works. The project reuses the combined work from #HolosSocial and #PawFed.

Fixing issues is a challenge. But I'm really happy, because since Marco has been here to help on #Codeberg, a lot has been fixed in #Fedilab.
Where I felt overwhelmed, he helped prioritize with categories, and even flagged high-priority issues, which helps me focus on the fixes.

This release also fixes quotes in notifications where the CW couldn't be opened.

I've sometimes thought about building a service combining #OSM and the #Fediverse, to talk with people in the same region.
It would be 100% anonymous: a dedicated account, with no link to your existing Fedi identity, and why not #E2EE for messages.
No exact location: posts are attached to the nearest town, so neither the server nor other users see your coordinates.
Anonymity could be what makes people comfortable enough to talk with people around them. Everyone stays in a safe place.

Installing the F-Droid store is really a good move. Everything is built from sources, and builds cannot reach the store if they contain trackers. The hardest store to get into, but the best one for your privacy.

I created #CastLab after coming back from holidays. I just wanted to cast my media to my TV and could not find a simple open source app for that, so I built one.
It has grown since: it supports #Kodi and the open source #FCast protocol. I was even surprised to see it also used to cast music to network speakers.
I will keep working on your feedback. Only on #FDroid, but it could be brought to #iOS if people are interested (through #AltStorePAL).

#Fedilab 4.43.0 clearly improved memory leak issues. The remaining ones come from the ExoPlayer library, which I need to upgrade (a lot of work because I delayed it). This is the library that plays videos and animated GIFs (MP4) in your timeline if you've enabled the option.

I might have been unclear in my messages when I made the choice to move some projects from #Codeberg to a self-hosted git solution.
These projects weren't vibe coding and weren't affected. I did it because the debate goes beyond vibe coding, and I feel more comfortable speaking in full transparency and taking action to respect all views.
I'm proud to be on Codeberg as a dev for 7 years, and all my other projects will stay, #Fedilab included.

I've started improving #Fedilab, especially some old annoying bugs, such as issues with certain instances not working over WiFi, or the app being slow to load timelines due to too much cache.
I recently got some reports, but most of them are missing the attachment (crash report). That's my fault: the ACRA lib is outdated. After that, I'll start fixing the issues reported on Codeberg.

#HolosDiscover 1.11 is available.
It now finds and filters spam on its own. To do so, it catches the same message posted again and again across servers, as well as posts full of hashtags, mentions, or links relative to their text content.
The interface also has a fresh new design that puts content first, along with trending accounts. All trends can be filtered by language, and the available languages reflect the content that's actually there.

#ActivityPub carries posts, follows, likes and so on, but not moderation. A ban stays trapped on the instance that issued it. So, for instance, an account banned for racism on one instance stays unknown to the next. Moderation is activity too, and it should travel like the rest: signed and verifiable. This is a real problem, and others have explored it already. I will look into what already exists and see what we could build on for #HolosSocial.

A hypothetical about chat control and #HolosSocial
Say a law one day required client-side scanning. The relay only ever sees encrypted data, so a scan would catch nothing. To read content, it must run in the client, before encryption. A closed client could add it silently in an update. An open one cannot: the code is public, anyone can recompile without it.
Would an open source #E2EE messenger on the #Fediverse like Holos be breaking the law if it did nothing? I am not sure. Your opinion?

#HolosSocial relay is confirmed to be very stable. I will officially tag it soon so admins can run their own relay with a script to easily install it on their VPS.
Using Holos with a custom domain and a cloud for media allows you to own your portable identity on the #Fediverse. Relays become only an infrastructure for it. Your device runs the #ActivityPub server and works as smoothly as any other app. Micro-blogging, media, and video, all from a single account. Switch with a simple tap.

An idea for #Fedilab: a feature to generate a description for your photos to help accessibility. You post an image, and a suggested alt text comes back for you to review and edit before publishing. It would run on a self-hosted open source vision model (#MoonDream: https://github.com/vikhyat/moondream) on my own server, in a closed loop with no cloud, no third-party service and no image stored. Would this be useful to you?

This looks like an IPv6 issue. Your instance likely has an issue with it. Tusky and Firefox fall back to IPv4 quickly, Fedilab gets stuck on the IPv6 attempt. On mobile there is no IPv6, so it works. Could you try disabling IPv6 on your box to confirm? I will look into improving the fallback on my side.

Tomorrow, I am back to #Fedilab fixes and enhancements. There is currently a beta version with several fixes. I will also try to improve the speed. The local cache keeps growing without limits, and past a certain point it slows the app down instead of making it faster. I will also add missing features from #Mastodon 4.6 (media descriptions for profile picture and header).

#Fedilab has an old entry called "Extra features", which was added long ago when #Mastodon forks came around with features such as reactions. This is something to rework: the app can detect what an instance supports and enable supported features automatically.

The next #Fedilab release will be able to detect a mismatch between the written text and the selected language of the message. This uses the #LibreTranslate server, so it has no extra weight on the final APK size and doesn't use any Google stuff. It will be turned off by default.

It simply speaks ActivityPub, so when a Delete or Update activity is received, the service updates or removes what it has in the DB. This changes nothing about privacy, even with millions of messages. The DB handles that load just fine, but you then need a server sized for it. That is the whole point of the poll. A dedicated server, or a time based retention, only to save storage space.

Yes, it works like a deep link. The difference is that regular deep links require domain verification to claim a domain. With web+ap://, it uses a protocol instead. It's the right solution for the Fediverse since you can't declare every instance domain. Any app that registers the protocol can handle it.

#HolosDiscover 1.7.2 is available. With over 9 million indexed posts, search now detects whether a term is rare or common and picks the most efficient strategy accordingly. Trending and stats now use a prebuilt cache for faster responses. Account search no longer returns false positives. Hashtag counts now respect filters. Several UI improvements included.

My first motivation when I started working on Open Source was listening to contributors full of ideas. That's the real engine. Fedilab actually got many built-in features before they became available on Mastodon itself (which created extra work later, syncing databases once they were officially added). But that's exactly what drives me. Not following a scheme, just following what you want to build. That's how I work on my projects, and I can't change that.

#UntrackMe 2.0 is now available on #FDroid. After more than 3 years without updates (deep links no longer worked on Android 12+), I finally redefined the app as a browser that checks links you tap to clean them before delegating the action to another app.
That was the only solution. I'll follow your feedback closely.

Full API support would allow pinning tailored timelines and interacting with new content. This would be particularly useful for small instances.

#Holos is a new social network working with #ActivityPub. This is not an app where you can connect your Mastodon, Pixelfed or PeerTube account.
There is no web version and no API because the ActivityPub server runs on the device itself. That's the whole challenge behind this project.
If there is more engagement, I plan to build a desktop version and even sync between different devices.

I just sent my first grant request to help fund my open source work, mainly to replace my old Mac. It crashes during builds, forcing me to kill apps and delete files to free up space, then wipe everything and reinstall emulators when switching between Android and iOS. For now I've focused on Android, but it defeats the whole point of buying a Mac. A new machine would let me work on both.

#UntrackMe 2.0 will be available soon.
Fully rebuilt with a new approach: the app now registers as a browser on Android 12+. Every link you tap goes through UntrackMe first, gets cleaned of tracking params, redirected to a privacy-friendly frontend if relevant, then handed off to the browser or app of your choice.
It also follows redirect chains to bypass tracking shorteners and unwrap any wrappers such as Google redirects.

A quick update on the fundraiser. Honestly, I felt almost ashamed to ask for this kind of help, because my own project was depending on support while starting to create frustration in my daily dev because of the machine. The response confirms it: Holos and my iOS projects aren't mature enough yet to have built that trust. So I'm dropping iOS for now and focusing on Android. The campaign is closed and contributors have been refunded.

Thanks for the report. This looks specific to your setup. On my side the bottom bar stays visible above the keyboard. Hard to debug from here. Could you open an issue at https://codeberg.org/tom79/Fedilab/issues with your Android version, keyboard, screen size, and Fedilab version?

I have been working on the fediverse word game. It now has a name: #Fedidle (fedi + riddle).
How a day will look:
12:00 UTC: bot posts the word to guess (followers only for better moderation and spoiler prevention)
11:55 UTC next day: game ends, bot posts public results
No time pressure. Play whenever you want. Just finish before 11:55 UTC the next day.

Fedidle will be a standalone ActivityPub server. Not a Mastodon API client. It will work with Mastodon, Misskey, Pleroma, GoToSocial and any ActivityPub implementation.
Open source. English first, multilingual architecture ready.
Web dashboard with instance leaderboard, game history, public API, and a top players ranking to give visibility to the best players (opt-in).

How to play: follow the bot, reply privately to the daily post with your guess.
The bot will answer with custom emojis:
Green = right letter, right spot
Yellow = right letter, wrong spot
Gray = not in the word
6 attempts. Word will be 6 to 9 letters. First letter revealed.
All emojis will have alt text for screen readers.

#Fedilab 3.38.0 has been released!
This version adds support for notification filtering policy and filtered notifications. Users can now control how notifications from non-followers, new accounts, or private mentions are handled, directly from the app (notification tab > three vertical dots). It also adds CSV export for the following list.

What if fediverse instances battled each other in a daily word game?
A bot posts a word to guess. You reply privately. Only real dictionary words accepted. End of day: instances ranked by average score, not size. A tiny instance can top the leaderboard.
Words come from player suggestions. First-try guesses carry less weight to keep it fair.
English only first.

Holos Discover already supports explicit opt-in via mention commands. Currently the indexable flag is still required, but since a direct mention is an explicit choice made by the user, it would make sense to allow it even when the indexable is off. That way someone could opt in to a consent-based Fediverse search engine while staying off traditional ones. I will look into it.

#HolosDiscover now has a public federation and moderation policy page. It explains how instance blocks work (trusted denylists, manual blocks, automated bridge detection), how to report illegal content, and how instance admins can appeal a block. If you sent me a DM and I never replied, I probably never received it. Mastodon 4.3 introduced a notification policy that drops private mentions from accounts you don't follow by default. #Fedilab does not yet support this API, so there was no way to see or change this setting from the app. I am working on adding support for this feature. Sorry if I missed your message.

A note about this week's work. I spent a lot of time fixing the Holos relay server after a mistake during the database migration in the script that cleans outdated pending activities. Nothing was being deleted, disk usage kept growing, and I could not even run a full vacuum. I had to fix it manually. To be honest, that cleanup script was just a workaround for a deeper issue with the shared inbox. (1/2)

The next step with #HolosSocial will be to let you use your root domain as your identity while still using a subdomain for the relay.
Yes, #Holos is kind of like #nostr but with #ActivityPub. The main difference: your data lives on your device, not on a server, and relays remain completely dumb.

Did you know that crash reports sent to #Fedilab through emails have been significantly reduced for the last few updates? Thank you for sending them, they are really useful and they have contributed to fixes in the repo.
Don't hesitate to contribute by enabling crash reports in Settings > Interface > Enable crash reports.

#HolosDiscover just hit 3 million indexed posts.
What matters more than the number: 145k deletions processed, 83k edits tracked, and over 1k opt-outs respected, all in real time.
Respecting people is the priority and the only way to do it right is to be a full #ActivityPub participant, receiving deletions, edits, and opt-outs as they happen. Before indexing anyone, Holos Discover follows their account, so they know they are being indexed and can opt out.

#PawFed is a project close to my heart. It's a collaborative map for animal welfare that bridges the #Fediverse and #OpenStreetMap.
The idea: mention [@PawFed](https://pawfed.org ) from your Mastodon account with hashtags and a location, and your report appears on the map. No signup, no app, just your existing Fediverse account.
It's not perfect yet, but the foundation is there. I will publish the source code soon under AGPL.

We identified a bug where creating a second account caused issues, fixed in rc-3. Your data should still be available. We can look into your case in detail and develop a patch if needed. Feel free to share more in DM.
Regarding the relay profile: it acts as a proxy for your custom domain, so it can't be fully disabled. It resolves WebFinger and routes ActivityPub requests to your device. We'll add a redirect on it to indicate the custom domain profile.

Today we made some changes to #HolosDiscover. Trending posts are now evaluated over 24h to give more visibility to fresh content. We'll also be working on trending links.
Everything is available through an API. The web version makes it accessible to anyone without technical knowledge.

We already introduced #E2EE DMs and #ActivityPub identity through custom domains. You own your followers, your keys, and your identity. Relays are just infrastructure.

Some positive news for #Holos: the relay now automatically generates SSL certificates for custom domains verified via CNAME, with a job running every 5 minutes to issue and renew them.
This means true ownership of your Fediverse identity: your domain, your name, fully working through ActivityPub. No other server needed, just your phone.
