People have been sharing that "Programming Still Sucks" article, and while I appreciate that it's well written and funny and makes some good points, overall I don't care for it.
Because it perpetuates the myth that *software development only happens* within corporate capitalist settings. And it's simply not true, nor should it be true.
Programmers can come from all walks of life, and express themselves *joyfully* through the art of software in many local/small biz or non-capitalist settings.

If AI were actually intelligent, there would be no need to learn "AI literacy" because you would just intuitively interact with the AI.

There's no feeling like the productivity* which comes from *having* to be productive. 😌
I've begun to hate "feeling inspired” and then working on a project, because such bursts of passion are rare and fleeting and hard to rely on.
I'd much rather drag my ass into a planning session for a project because *I'm a goddamn professional* and get creative work done *because I have to*. I can't afford the luxury of writer's block.

With the news that Bluesky closed a $100M Series B (!!) last April and didn't tell anyone (??) until now, it's just become far more obvious that Bluesky is inching very close to its full enshittification era.

The hate for GNOME makes me upset because GNOME is literally the only reason I am using Linux on the desktop now. Otherwise I'd just stick to macOS. I appreciate the folks who work on KDE and other desktop environments, but GNOME is the only one which fits my design-forward brain and feels genuinely delightful to use. And the ability to say No and be opinionated about design is *why* it's good design.

Perhaps one of the reasons I didn't find it terribly difficult to leave Twitter in 2022, even having amassed several thousand followers just in the previous two years, was because I never really liked Twitter.
I don't have any nostalgic feelings about it. I was reluctant to join the platform in the first place. I was a Pownce guy. I liked blogs & RSS. I liked forums. I even liked Facebook (before it went full evil).

I was once on a codebase that was partly that and partly utility classes in various components and it was just awful. Eventually the whole team realized it was awful, and we started winding back out of all of that completely in favor of real CSS (and a dash of Sass).

I get all that, and I'm much less informed than I should be. I was specifically thinking though of how at odds our federal government is with certain states. I’m so angry with what’s in today’s news here in America I am having trouble stringing complete sentences together.
All I can do is say I #StandWithMinnesota and Governor Walz, with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, with all of the legitimate authorities on the ground protecting locals and investigating this horrific murder. I stand with the brave protesters there and around the country in this grim, grim moment.

OK so I've been talking about The End of UX for a while now.
I want to shoutout the @npub1ec6…t4g5 account for *not* ending UX. They are engaging with some pretty heated feedback regarding LLM-related UI and having a genuine dialogue. I may be pretty much on the side of the heated feedback, but I also want to give credit where credit is due.
The End of UX would be to say "we'll design this however we want and you'll just love it” rather than engage. FF isn't doing that, which is commendable!

#Zig moved to it. LibreWolf is using it. Many #Fediverse projects use it including the FEP process. #Fedora set up their own Forgejo instance (the underlying software for Codeberg).

I've been using a 27” LG 4K display for a few years now. Looks fantastic relative to the price. On both Linux & Mac I use scaling to drive it like a 5K “Retina” display and unless I really get close and squint, I can't tell there's any issue with the resolution.

Only of course it's not actually Rachel Maddow. They're all deepfakes. 🤡 Slop videos which are apparently convincing enough to fool people in significant numbers.

Like a ton of people I heard about the viral "whistleblower" talking about awful awful stuff regarding food delivery apps, but I didn't comment on it or boost it because I've developed a pretty decent sixth sense for when stories are sourced and when stories seem like too-good-to-be-true rumors.
Do I believe these apps mostly suck on the backend? Totally, but we need to be careful not to boost stuff merely because it's what we want to hear—especially when fabricating *anything* is so easy now.

Well, I don't see those two questions as diametrically opposed. I find it very strange that for what seemed like decades there was the thought that in tech that where power users start, "average" people will follow… until suddenly now power users don't matter, they're just weird old geeks.
That seems very self-serving for businesses which believe they can essentially con people who don't have enough technical acumen to recognize they're being conned.

It boggles my mind that they do not seem to understand how incredibly toxic the Copilot brand has become. I haven't seen a single person, **even people who boost those sorts of genAI services in general**, saying they like it.

I think I agree, only the unfortunate reality is at least some of the people putting forth these sorts of anti-artist arguments do have backgrounds in creative fields themselves. I can only imagine it's because they think they can benefit in some material way by throwing their own worker class under the bus. But yeah, often you hear that sort of rhetoric from people who definitely want to bypass working with creatives altogether because humans are, um, messy.

Spend enough time in certain circles (*cough* LinkedIn *cough*), you’ll no doubt come across a rather peculiar line of argumentation extolling the world-changing virtues of the slop machines.
We are told that these services aren’t to be lauded merely on the merits of what they can do for us in the course of performing creative work, but also for this reason: armed with access to these services, you can Take Down The Man.
And by "The Man", they mean…artists.
