I stopped at an empty agricultural field today with my dog. The golden brittle summer heat scorched grass was disc scored, clumps of straw and dust. Hog weed and Russian thistle scattered sporadically, plants with chemical warfare and grit. To my full color binocular sight the scene was peaceful but plain, inspirational in the way a minimalist painting calms some embroiled part of the subconscious by failing to inspire the conscious mind while engaging it. To her, the scene was a video of Tokyo at night. She darted from place to place, nose to the ground, a tapestry of chronologically ordered events unfolding for her mind in olfactory stimulation impulses as visual clues present themselves to a large predatory cat, or the combination of sight and sound inspire an owl at night. I watched her for some time adventuring through the field. I wonder if at some point humans will be able to opt for augmentation to our senses. I wonder how the world will present with the ears of an owl, the nose of a canine, and the tactical response of a feline. The result seems as if it might be like having the resolution of our eyesight in every genre of sensation.

I agree, I tend to see it as I’m either being prepared while participating in polite society, or I’m coping with a combat zone in which case the loud-out would be substantially different. There are situations in which probably being prepared adequately all the time is unreasonable, and that lack of adequate preparedness means assured defeat. There are legal ramifications to consider surrounding a defensive shooting scenario with lots of preparedness. It doesn’t look good in court. For me it boils down to assessing risk. Multiple assailants? Probably just give them what they want.

Even with armor, my guess is three .45 LC packing 1300 ftlbs to the rib cage is going to take your wind and knock you down. If you’re quick the other three are available for close range follow up. Most of the time the guerrilla forces prevail. At some point there will only be humanity, associations that function, and associations that don’t. Language barriers will be all but nonexistent in the next twenty years, cultural dilution will happen at an astounding rate. AI can write laws that are impossible for humans to understand. There are two kinds of laws: specific laws, like speed limits, and laws that require judgment, like those that address reckless driving. Imagine that we train an AI on lots of street camera footage to recognize reckless driving and that it gets better than humans at identifying the sort of behavior that tends to result in accidents. And because it has real-time access to cameras everywhere, it can spot it everywhere. The AI won’t be able to explain its criteria: It would be a black-box neural net. But we could pass a law defining reckless driving by what that AI says. It would be a law that no human could ever understand. This could happen in all sorts of areas where judgment is part of defining what is illegal. We could delegate many things to the AI because of speed and scale. Market manipulation. Medical malpractice. False advertising. I don’t know if humans will accept this.

Because Recall is “default allow” (it relies on a list of things not to record) ... it’s going to vacuum up huge volumes and heretofore unknown types of data, most of which are ephemeral today. The “we can’t avoid saving passwords if they’re not masked” warning Microsoft included is only the tip of that iceberg. There’s an ocean of data that the security ecosystem assumes is “out of reach” because it’s either never stored, or it’s encrypted in transit. All of that goes out the window if the endpoint is just going to...turn around and write it to disk. (And local encryption at rest won’t help much here if the data is queryable in the user’s own authentication context!)
