When they put fiber in front of the house I live in and then planned the routing through the house, I replaced my ISP’s router with a FRITZ!Box. This way, I thought, I don’t need to change two things at once when the routing is done.
The FRITZ!Box sends a monthly health/status update email which is not terribly useful but also not offending me. So I keep it on.
I just received the 23rd email.

Maybe they are too luck based? I know I was frustrated by games of chance when I was young. It felt unfair.

What card games are you playing? Maybe there is a way to give yourself a handicap (draw fewer cards) to even the odds. It might also be good to take the time to explain some of the decisions/strategy so they can learn from it – you lost, but look if you did this and that you can win next time (I would assume you already do this, but just to be sure)

Narrowing accessibility to EAA compliance has dramatically hurt the whole field. The EAA is great and much needed, but “are we doing the minimum thing to not get fined” has poisoned the discourse. I think it dragged us down for the moment instead of lifting us up. I’m positive this will change, but it will take years.
Currently, most companies think of accessibility as a technical property of their website or app, instead of an intrinsic one.

I understand that driving on curvy roads is enticing for bike drivers, but they are driving so hazardously here. High speed, leaning into the opposite lanes, overtaking without seeing a thing (because curves) is something I see almost every time I’m driving.
(But then I might be prejudiced because I come from an even more curvy part of Germany and we often had a fatality each week when it was biker weather. 🙁)

I think with a lot of preparation, you could have made this fun and interesting. For example, you could have used this clear children’s toy and make a make-believe sci-fi kitchen appliance out of it. Sometimes it can be useful to remove preconceived notions to let people see patterns behind the concrete application. It doesn’t feel like that was the goal or even attempted. If it’s just a prop, you can use the real thing.

Plus traditional automation usually makes things more consistent and more efficient, while LLMs are not necessarily more efficient.

The difference with LLM vs. classic automation is that they are non-determinable. You just don’t know if you get reliable outputs and we see this with “hallucinations”.
There are appropriate uses of LLMs. I used Parakeet V3 yesterday to get transcripts for videos. Transforming stuff works reasonably well, this includes quick (but not necessarily good) translations and grammar testing. (1/2)

Why are accessibility books so expensive? I hope everyone is paid well, but 27 Euros for an ebook and 54 Euros for the paperback is quite steep for 300-odd pages.

As a mainly iOS user, everything on Android feels some level of janky. That said, those settings drawers seem to work comparatively reliably.
(Edit to say that iOS has also a lot of jank, but it is the jank we got to know along the way!)

The next cinema is also like an hour drive away from here, longer with public transport and with the COVID risk, besides likely minimal due to masking, it is just not worth it.
Plus pee breaks whenever I want, captions that actually work, free snacks, and the ability to rewind if something is unclear or awesome.
I miss the event character of going to the cinema, but especially with longer and longer films, home cinema is just so much nicer.

Exactly. But you can’t test if something you implemented works as per spec by testing in a browser that has issues with said spec.
If you want to know if you have implemented something correctly, you need to test in a browser/screen reader combination that supports it.
When you have verified that it works in proper browser/screen reader combination, you can see if Chome’s implementation is good enough for you.

I mean, the “Lohn” in Lohnsteuerhilfeverein means Salary, so that’s not surprising. I’ve never been employed, so I don’t know anything about that. I just know that it was pretty straightforward when I did it. If you have to go to a Steuerberater, you might book the costs as expenses for the company and lower your tax burden.

Agreed. I think 15% is training, 85% is experience. And that is not only accessibility testing experience but also experience with people who actually use assistive technologies on a daily basis. A lot of abstract concepts get a lot easier to understand when you get experience.

I mean, unless you start to regulate my clients, it doesn’t really impact how I think about it. I think respecting preferences is important for accessibility, even features that are not meant for accessibility. I see both sides of the argument, but I wished they’d just give us a list and what the requirements are for a dark mode. Do contrasts need to conform to WCAG or is one of the modes enough for that? So many question marks.

EN says “Apps need to support accessibility features”. Dark mode is considered an accessibility feature by several regulators we (Axess Lab) talked to.
