I'm still thinking about The Odyssey. :soft_thinking: Normally I really don't like when movies are super grounded in realism (fuck you Tom Hooper) but I find myself really rejuvenated by The Odyssey. There's no overly distracting bloom bleeding in from every corner of the frame, there's no washed out muddy toned color grading, there's no overly pretentious magical realism CGI bullshit, and they *actually used* a fucking *key light* so you could see the damn actors on the screen.

I don't think pipe cleaners are robust enough. There's stuff like craft wire, but I'm kinda curious if the nose would get too heavy and make the head uncomfortable. It's easier to do in stuff like a tail since most of the weight is going to a belt.

I really like Wendover Productions, but the [California High-Speed Rail: An Autopsy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NK0wBBZZ24 ) video he put out today is pissing me off.
Spoilers, but the conclusion it comes to is that California HSR is too ambitious and it failed to be pragmatic because it *checks notes* actually services people in the Central Valley. Based on the way the video started, I expected to think that the California HSR authority made a bunch of stupid decisions that drove the project costs up. By the end of it, all of the stupid decisions basically boiled down to, "It's going to service more people." Like. :neodog_what:
Just to go point-by-point:<li>"It'll increase travel times between LA and San Francisco." So? Everyone deserves to have access to the line. People in LA and SF can sit on a train for an extra dozen minutes if it means tens of thousands of more people can use the line.</li><li>"Putting it through downtown corridors is more expensive." That is <em>incredible</em> short-term thinking. Americans have a plethora of park-and-ride rail systems that are failing because getting in your car in order to use a train is inconvenient and, frankly, fucking stupid. More people will use the network if it's more accessible, ultimately costing the project less in the long-term.</li><li>"The costs are too high." California has a staggering gap between what it pays per-capita into the federal government vs what it gets back. If California wasn't being bled dry by failing red states it's forced to subsidize, it would have no problem paying for the rail project. The federal government needs to suck a big fat one and pony up to pay for it, because they owe it to the state at this point. It'd cost 10% of the pentagon's annual budget, which is less than the amount of money that disappears from the Pentagon's budget every year when it's audited. It's not too expensive.</li>
I'm so tired of people doing autopsy videos on the California HSR project like it's somehow dead. It's not. It's being built, and it's being built (mostly) correctly.

The serifs on an uppercase 'I' and lowercase 'l' shouldn't be considered serifs, they should be part of the letter. All sans-serif fonts should have them.
They're on upper-case T's, why not on upper-case I's? And we don't take them off lower case t's so why would we take them off of lower-case l's?

I watched the Gameoverse pilot. :wolf_peek: I really wanted to like it, but, like... it felt super rushed and kind of all over the place :soft_dizzy: It seemed like it wanted to start off with an origin story, but also started *sort of* in medias res? Narratively it was super confusing and hard to get your bearings on anything.
I was also really hoping that the art style for each character was going to be informed by the style of game they came from, maybe not to the extent of Gumball but something along those lines, but instead they're all drawn in this low-FPS style that doesn't feel particularly video game inspired.
I dunno. I'm interested in the series for sure, but it feels like a pretty uneven start. Also did anyone else notice that Grant Kirkhope straight up stole his own theme from Treasure Trove Cove for Flappers? :soft_owo:

Yeah, how I understand that ATProto works is that you're basically given *everything* and you have to filter it down to what you want. The advantage Bluesky has over a traditional blockchain is that the only "ledger" is the did:plc system which you don't have to host in order to access, and the did:plc system is just a standard key pair instead of being a proof of work cryptographic hash. It's honestly a little bit more like DNS than a blockchain. That said, I wouldn't call DNS decentralized. :neodog_what: DNS has an oversight authority the same way did:plc does. If the core mechanism for accessing the network is run by a central authority, I don't understand how it could be considered federated. Which is part of the reason Blacksky went down. :soft_dizzy: did:plc literally went down while Bluesky was being DDOS'd and it literally brought down *every ATProto service*. Woo federation!!! :blobfoxgooglymlem: There's also did:web, but that comes with all the downsides ATProto people whine about ActivityPub for since you have to first discover that the account exists through federation before you can ingress it.
But yeah, Bluesky is fake federation. If the only part of the stack that you can control is hosting your own data, you're not federating, you're just shouldering some server cost.

I'm still pretty upset that furries largely chose Bluesky over Fedi, and Bluesky's decision to start haphazardly banning babyfurs is the main reason why. Bluesky doesn't understand the intricacies of furries to moderate them, especially our various subcultures. The benefit of Mastodon et al. is that the servers are managed by people from your subculture.
A lot of my reservations about Bluesky being a Twitter 2.0 were hand-waved away because ATProto (the protocol Bluesky is built on) is federated like ActivityPub (the protocol the Fediverse/Mastodon is built on). ATProto is federated, yes, but it's not a protocol that promotes community-building like ActivityPub does. ATProto is a workbench for building out large monolithic social networks, instead of the tapestry of communities that make up the Fediverse. ATProto seems to focus on individual data sovereignty, while the Fediverse is focused on community sovereignty. Unfortunately, yes, that makes the Fediverse a little harder to use than ATProto AppViews, but ultimately I think it's worth it.
I dunno. I've rambled about this kind of thing a lot of times in the past, sorry I keep bringing it up. :soft_shrug: Just something I enjoy thinking about.

For anyone unfamiliar, Apple's App Attest and Google Play Integrity are "hardware attestation" which uses a hardware lockout to verify that you device is 'valid' and not tampered with. It sounds like good security in theory, until you think about it for more than two seconds. It effectively means that, in order to have a 'valid' device, you need to be approved by either Apple or Google. As such, it doesn't work with non-Google Android ROMs like GrapheneOS, /e/, LineageOS, etc. Once your device isn't considered valid by Play Integrity it locks you out of hundreds of apps, effectively giving Google complete monopolistic control over Android.
This change to reCaptcha brings that same monopolistic control to the web. If you thought you could be above the Apple/Google duopoly in some way, congratulations, it's officially impossible. You have to own a Google Play-certified phone or iPhone in order to participate in society in 2026.

I can't reproduce the issue you're seeing on my end. Have you tried clearing your cache? CTRL+Shift+R (or CMD+Shift+R on macOS) can force your browser to overwrite a lot of the cache. Also, do you have any Firefox extensions that could be presenting a problem? :wolf_peek:

If I see one more person justify Apple's stupid walled garden by saying, "Well they have server infrastructure to maintain and they design all the frameworks that developers use," I think my head is going to explode.
1) Apple is the one who forces people to use their infrastructure. iOS could easily permit side-loading and the use of third-party SDKs and frameworks. If the costs are so great for them, then open up the platform.
2) People saying this ignore the fact that dozens of other operating systems, widget toolkits, and other developer frameworks exist without requiring a walled garden.
3) In order to deploy apps for iOS, you pay Apple for:
- An Apple device to develop on.
- A developer license.
- A cut of the app's sale price.
- A cut of every in-app purchase.
Does Apple really need to quadruple dip with their developers in order to provide their phones and SDK? Really? :neodog_what:
Never mind that Apple uses their locked down platform to steal ideas from other companies and destroy them by leveraging their deeper system access (see Tile) or that they regularly curry favor with authoritarian regimes by censoring the apps users are allowed to install (see Ice Block). The economic argument just falls flat on its face before any of that.
