I went ahead and closed the call credit spreads turned iron condors for a 13% loss. If we had been a bit lower today, I would have been ok, but I just don't like the risk anymore and I don't want a pop up on Thursday make it worse. I've had a decent month so far so it's all good. You can't win them all, and it's important to keep losses small.

Powell wasn’t the choice of the White House (I won’t say Biden because he still thinks Alan Greenspan is the chairman).
But the Street called their Senators and told them that the choices the WH wanted were unacceptable and not to be confirmed.
This is, ultimately, a good thing as the WH choices were awful.

I took down my first win of April by closing my calendars from last week at 10%. Good start to the month.
The ratio fly couldn't quite come off yesterday with the down move, and it's lost some ground today with the up move but as of now it's still profitable. I have a plan for it if we keep going up.
I may put on something new later today depending on the market.

Your car analogy is quite applicable.
Health insurance is fine. But it needs to be actual insurance and not a payment plan. Think of it like car or homeowners insurance. It’s there to handle unexpected big ticket things, not routine maintenance.
I‘m a fan of HSAs on steroids. Tie a high deductible policy to a tax- free savings account that I own entirely. I say on steroids because I’d like the option to raise the deductible even higher and allow me to save as much as I want in that account. But the current HSA model is a good start. I can keep everything I put in there for life, it’s tax free as long as it’s spent on medical expenses. At retirement age it’s eligible to be pulled out for any other reason but doing so mesns it will be taxed (no additional penalties, just regular income). And I can make money on the balance over time.

Time help in a lot of cases but it doesn’t eliminate all risk. Location really matters. Back to the town where I was born. The area died economically. If you bought in back in the 90s your property is def worth significantly less than what you paid. Location risk is really big in real estate. If you bought into much of Detroit back in the 80s, you may not be happy holding it now.
I’m not trying to trash real estate. It can be a good thing. But it’s not risk free.

That depends entirely on where you live. In most places, probably not. In some, yes. In the town where I was born, that is absolutely true. Where I live now, it isn’t. That’s one of the many reasons I don’t live there and haven’t for decades now.
The problem comes when there’s a big economic crash with high unemployment and a stock market crash. People need cash so they go to sell their house. But there aren’t buyers out there because of the crash. So the value of your asset goes down right when you need it the most. If you can afford to wait it out you will be ok. If you can’t, you’re sunk. The bank comes calling and people just walk away because they can’t afford to sell it.
It’s not all the time but properry is a market and is still dependent on buyers and sellers. Everything Is great…until it isn’t.

That explains your statement about property values. You likely have not really experienced a crash in that market.
There are other reasons why real estate can go down but that was a really big example.
Property is like any other asset class. Best to buy low and sell high. I see people paying crazy prices right now and wonder if they aren’t doing that. At some point buyers dry up and prices will respond.

And the down move today caused the ratio fly I put on yesterday to close for 8%. I was away from my desk when it did, it closed about 90 mins ago so the picture is shows more than I actually got. This was a good first try at this trade. I'll keep it in mind in similar conditions.

Extinction is a very simple formula: death rate > birth rate. This could happen very quickly in the case of a genocide other extinction level events or it can happen slowly over time. That is literally the reason extinction occurs.
If an individual women decides not to have children (or to only have 1), there’s little higher ramifications. To quote Douglas Adam’s, it’s ”mostly harmless”.
If this happens at a societal level, then it’s bad but not catastrophic. While I prefer a world with, for example, Japanese and French people in it, the human race will ultimately survive without them. There are many historical examples of this.
If this happens at the species level, then all of humanity goes extinct. I would argue that this would be catastrophic, but I suppose there are arguments to the contrary.
The human race can afford to have a certain percentage of women fully liberated. It cannot afford this at a global scale.
To bring this back to my original point: this is the ultimate cause of population decline. It’s not some mysterious cause. It’s just not considered polite in many circles to call it out but it’s undeniable. But is does involve intentional choices with trade offs. Anyone who considers population decline to be a problem and doesn’t address this isn’t really serious about it. I suppose you could find some way to stop people from aging and ultimately dying, but as we don’t have that ability today, the only practical way to address the issue is on the birth side of the equation.

I never said I wanted anything. I’ve advocated no policy whatsoever. I even stated that my use of the Amish example was to demonstrate my larger point. Comparing them to modern mainstream populations was entirely appropriate because I’m showing the results of different choices at both a familial level as well as a societal level by comparing real populations in the real world.
Societies that fully liberate women are, ultimately doomed to extinction. It may take a few hundred years but it’s inevitable. Some may think that the price is worth going extinct, others may not. My goal in this thread is not to advocate any position, but simply to point out the root cause of modern population decline. Again, even feminists espouse this when the problem presented is high birth rates. I’m simply applying the same logic when opposite issue is presented. I agree with the feminist argument. But there are 2 sides to that coin. Ignoring the flip side doesn’t invalidate it.

I would argue it generally still comes down to choices and priorities. Family life is priced out based on other life choices. To use an extreme example, the Amish aren’t exactly wealthy, yet they have a crazy high birth rate (around 7). I’m not saying every young person who wants a family need to become Amish, nor should we have a nationwide native birth rate of 7 but it’s an extreme example to demonstrate a point. I‘m saying that one’s financial state is generally the sum of a bunch of financial and lifestyle choices and those choices show one’s priorities. Those choices have consequences since financial resources as well as time are finite. How you spend them will determine what you can do and what you can’t do because you can’t do (or have) it all. To the Amish, family is clearly very important to the expense of other aspects of life. Others will have different priorities and, therefore, different outcomes. Career women rarely have more than 2 children. And this crosses over to societies like Scandinavia where government policies are extremely generous which complicates the argument that more government support will raise birth rates because they don’t…at least not enough to turn the tide. Raising rates from, say, 1.7 to 2 isn‘t a big enough needle move.

My issues with Christianity at least in it’s pure literal form is that it’s based on slave morality which is, inherently, communist in nature.

Because once you grant government these types of powers they almost never give it up. Party affiliation doesn't matter in these sorts of things. This is why you don't grant the authority in the first place.
FISA on paper seems reasonable...a balance between important surveillance needs and putting some checks on its use. But in practice it's a rubber stamp and the FBI has been shown to simply lie to the judges and always get what they want...without consequences. That's why it's bad.

By dropping the charges she will get them testify against Trump who she really wants. I’d be willing to bet that is a part of these plea deals.
I still think the case is crap but it doesn’t matter. Her ultimate goal is to stop him from getting elected by hindering his campaign. She can likely find a jury in Fulton County to get a conviction, then the appeals will take years and I think it will, ultimately, get overturned. But the Dems have their talking points and that’s all that matters.

You aren’t being asked what women can bring to the table. You are being asked what you specifically bring to the table. You want your independence in a relationship, you want to be an equal. That makes the question relevant. If you were willing to take on the traditional female role, then the answer would be obvious and the question would not be necessary. The fact that you don’t want that makes it a legit question.

I went back and forth a bit on whether to do this trade this week but I kept it to a 2-lot to keep it small. I put on an 11-day put diagonal with the shorts at 4315P and the longs at 4325P. If we keep doing down it will be fine. If we pop, I'll consider adding a call diagonal to flatten it out and give more room. Will look at a bigger trade likely on Weds.

This is by design. By keeping the signals at least somewhat ambiguous it gives them an out if they change their mind or regret it later.
The key to seduction is giving them the ability of deniability of what they know they want. Give them the mental out of “it just happened” when everyone knows it didn’t. Most of the time, they expect you to make the first real move. Then you have to gage the reaction. If you don’t, it likely won’t happen. There are exceptions of course but in my several decades of experience, I have found this to be the case. It takes a while for a lot of younger guys to figure this out.
It’s a fine line but it’s the one we have to walk.

Mostly because I don’t believe that left libertarianism is a real thing or at a minimum has zero practicality and so not a serious position. You can’t want the government to have a heavy regulatory hand but still want them to stay away out of your life and wallet. Those 2 thing’s don’t go together. So if you chop that quadrant off you get the 3 sides.
And it better shows the alignment of fundamental value of each side more clearly, at least to me. It shows how what we call the right is really split between 2 different core values that reduce the other as one increases. It’s the fundamental divide on the right.

All of their bond holders would immediately demand payment and their ability to borrow would be next to zero.
