A week and a half after we published this text, the Democrats finally compelled Joe Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. But our argument stands—not just because it took almost a month for Biden to withdraw, and not only because he simply passed the torch to Kamala Harris, who represents the same policies and the same ossified bureaucracy as Biden, but because all the problems we face remain as intractable as they were before he dropped out.
If democracy is so fragile that it could be abolished as the consequence of a single election, then it was already bankrupt—it was never a means by which to secure and defend the self-determination that everyone deserves. We need something more ambitious and resilient. We need a movement capable of facing down fascism as well as forcing out anyone else who tries to rule over us. We need a set of values, organizing principles, and strategies that can keep us oriented through the nightmare that is undoubtedly ahead.
A real solution would not change who the Democratic candidate for president is—it would render it irrelevant.

The pressure to immigrate to the United States is itself the consequence of US foreign policy and worldwide neoliberal economic policies that have impoverished millions, forcing them to flee war zones and economic crises. Soon, we will see even more people displaced by environmental disasters caused by industrially produced climate change.
Again, these are the fault of the ruling class, not the poor.
By immiserating both overseas populations and residents of the United States while suppressing anti-capitalist protest movements, neoliberal centrists created a situation in which fascists can pretend to be the only ones offering an alternative. But the supposed alternative represented by politicians like Donald Trump will only speed up the process of wealth concentration that caused this problem in the first place.
The only real solution is a worldwide movement to resist fascism and abolish capitalism and the state.

In the 2024 Republican platform, they explicitly promise to "CARRY OUT THE LARGEST DEPORTATION OPERATION IN AMERICAN HISTORY."
Why this obsession with attacking immigrants and refugees?
Over the past sixty years, wealth inequality in the United States has doubled. In 1963, the wealthiest families had 36 times the wealth of families in the middle of the wealth distribution; by 2022, they had 71 times the wealth of families in the middle.
In 1963, the wealthiest billionaire owned $1.2 billion. In 2022, Elon Musk owned $219 billion.
So it's not surprising that people are angry.
Yet using their vast resources to control the media, Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and other elements of the ruling class have managed to direct popular resentment at those who suffer most under capitalism—the undocumented, the poor, those whose families have been exploited for generations. This strategy is calculated to enable the rich to continue fleecing the middle class while avoiding consequences for it.
Gullible bigots blame the penniless for their own problems, rather than holding the powerful to account.
This is the recipe for fascism.

The shooting at Donald Trump’s rally took place just in time to maximize ratings for the Republican National Convention. The Democrats already seem to be accommodating themselves to a future in which they will be the junior partners in an even more authoritarian reboot of state power.
In response to the shooting, politicians across the spectrum have decried “political violence." But political violence is fundamental to all government—not least the United States government. The key to Trump’s appeal is that he is explicitly promising to direct this violence against undocumented people, poor people of color, women, queer and trans people, anarchists, and other scapegoats.
Trump’s rise coincided with a dramatic spike in political mass shootings and vehicular attacks, many of which were carried out by his supporters. Everything that centrist politicians do to pave the way for his return renders them complicit in the bloodbaths ahead.
Anarchists already participated in the round of social unrest that ultimately blocked Trump’s ambitions in 2017-2020. We know that voting, sign-holding, court cases, and liberal op-eds will not protect us or our neighbors.
Now it’s time to prepare for the next round.

The Trump campaign aims to use today's shooting as a sort of Reichstag fire to incite his supporters to step up street violence while calling for more state repression targeting his enemies of choice.
The Biden campaign has already paused all outbound communications and withdrawn their television advertisements, ceding the entire field of narrative to Donald Trump, who will have no compunction about using his status as a victim to advance his efforts to victimize others.
One of the classic mechanics of totalitarianism is that protecting the safety of the leader becomes a justification for violence against large swathes of the population.
As centrists join the far right in paving the way for totalitarian rule under Trump, we have to organize to defend our communities. If you have been in denial about the challenges ahead of us, this should be a wake-up call to find each other and prepare for them.

Why Stop at Removing Biden?

Biden’s refusal to step aside is a microcosm of an entire civilization at an impasse. How can the Democrats blithely set about losing what they have vociferously insisted could be the last democratic election in the history of the United States?
Centrist governments have focused on repressing the movements that would form the first line of defense against a fascist takeover, while strengthening the institutions that the fascists will use to impose their rule. Having betrayed what passed as the “left” within the Democratic Party, the party machinery is now betraying the center—the one group it ostensibly exists to serve.
It turns out that when your goal is to force inequality and oppression on people, eventually fascism becomes a more efficient contender for the contract than democracy.
If some Democrats are suddenly prepared to throw out their duly appointed candidate, why stop there? Why not throw out the entire party machine that got them here, and party politics itself for good measure?
Heading into another tumultuous period, it's time to think about what strategic proposals could address and empower the millions of people who will soon be forced to seek solutions outside electoral politics—whether they wish to or not.

We remember him at the time of his debate with Michel Foucault in 1971, passionately arguing for anarcho-syndicalism.
"If it is correct, as I believe it is, that a fundamental element of human nature is the need for creative work, for creative inquiry, for free creation without the arbitrary limiting effects of coercive institutions, then it will follow that a decent society should maximize the possibilities for this fundamental human characteristic to be realized. That means trying to overcome the elements of repression and oppression and destruction and coercion that exist in any society—ours, for example—as a historical residue. A federated, decentralized system of free associations incorporating economic as well as social institutions would be anarcho-syndicalism, and it seems to me that it is the appropriate form of social organization for an advanced technological society in which human beings do not have to be forced into the position of tools, of cogs in the machine—in which the creative urge, that I think is intrinsic to human nature, will be able to realize itself."

Trump has been convicted of falsifying business records.
From our perspective, the outrageous thing is that some people are more concerned with whether he violated the law in a business transaction than with the concrete harm he has inflicted on human beings. The fact that so much of the damage he has done was legal shows the worthlessness of the law itself, which is usually used against poor people and to suppress movements against oppression, genocide, and climate change. This particular court outcome will not buy our allegiance to a fundamentally repressive legal system.

Louise Michel in New Caledonia

In honor of Louise Michel’s birthday and the ongoing anticolonial resistance in New Caledonia, we offer a narrative recounting her time in exile there and her support for the uprising that took place against the French occupiers during her stay.
This story illustrates how regimes seek to force their own subjects into service in colonial projects. It is worth remarking that, like Mikhail Bakunin, Peter Kropotkin, and many other 19th-century anarchists, Louise Michel only came to formally identify as an anarchist after spending time with Indigenous people. While many of her colleagues nonetheless retained Eurocentric notions about “progress” and “civilization,” Louise Michel wholeheartedly sided with Indigenous resistance to French colonialism. Consequently, she is remembered more warmly today than most French settlers in New Caledonia.

Murdering tens of thousands of civilians, most of them women and children. Rendering 1.7 million more homeless. Commanding the refugees to crowd into tents in a designated “humanitarian zone,” then bombing it, killing dozens at a time. The Israeli government has done all of these things on purpose.
Think how many more Palestinians the Israeli military might have already slaughtered if not for the pressure brought to bear against them, chiefly as the result of grassroots protests. This is why we have to keep organizing and taking action in solidarity with Palestinians. If we let this kind of brutality become normalized, the future will be bloodier than we can imagine.

First as tragedy, then as farce.
In 2017, when Donald Trump became president, anarchists in the Bay Area displayed a banner reading "Become Ungovernable" while shutting down San Francisco International Airport in protest of the Muslim Ban and a speaking event at the University of California at Berkeley featuring the infamous misogynist and Islamophobe Milo Yiannopoulos.
This week, the Libertarian Party displayed the same phrase (with the "a" circled, no less!) while hosting Donald Trump himself. The Libertarian Party represents the opposite of anarchism: they only endorse the kind of freedom that money can buy, whereas for us, real freedom is beyond price.
Our enemies have no ideas of their own, no vision, nothing to offer. All they have is what they dishonestly steal from us. We must, indeed, become ungovernable. 🏴🏴🏴

There is no way to stop to the bloodshed without putting an end to the colonial oppression of Palestinians.

The students occupying Columbia University in solidarity with Gaza are tapping into a long history of resistance.
In April 1968, at the high point of the anti-war and Black liberation movements, students and their non-student comrades occupied Columbia. The notorious anarchist group Up Against the Wall Motherfucker—"a street gang with an analysis"—made their public debut during this pitched struggle.

This afternoon, Columbia University brought in New York police arrest over a hundred students who were occupying the campus in solidarity with Palestinians. In response, a much bigger wave of student demonstrators has occupied the university. Tonight, the occupation continues, stronger than ever.

Today, people in Oakland, California, Eugene, Oregon, and Chicago, Illinois have blocked major highways. Demonstrators in Minnesota blockaded an Amazon facility. Others from Canada to Australia have shut down ports and other infrastructure.
These courageous actions in solidarity with Palestinians are just one step towards stopping the genocide in Gaza, where the Israeli military has slaughtered over 34,000 people, the majority of whom are women and children.
It's up to us to create a world without colonial violence of any kind.

Unrest has broken out in the regions of Kurdistan that are occupied by the Turkish government. People are protesting the decision of the ruling AKP party, the party of president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to give the post of mayor of the city of Wan to its own candidate, despite the fact that the AKP candidate lost the election. This decision, and the widespread state violence with which it has been imposed, illustrates how Turkish democracy is a form of autocracy.
