So what’s the deal with trigger warnings? Do they actually help? They clear are a culture war fixture. But where do they come from and is there any scientific evidence behind them?
Because they first got public attention at liberal arts universities in the US I assumed that it was the popularization of academic research. That’s not actually what happened. It was students who pressured schools to adopt them. Where did the students learn about trigger warnings? Early social media! LiveJournal, Tumblr, and most especially fanfic sites had trigger and content warnings on their content and lots of students had used those sites in high school and liked the idea of trigger warnings.

Substack’s getting more traction and moving beyond text and newsletters.

What’s most interesting is why people are moving to or sticking with substack. It’s traffic generation. They’re taking a 10% cut of revenue but they are able to use the platform and network to drive 50% of new subscribers and 30% of new paid subscribers to each substack creator. Sure, creators also need to build traffic, but the power is in the network which grows an audience.
If we are going to see Nostr as a protocol for creators who run a business, we need to make it easier for them to build an audience. That can be algorithims, but it could also be making it easier to recommend good content, share lists, etc…
The other issue we face with creators is that subscriptions are much more valuable to a creator than one off payments. With NWC and wallets we CAN do subscriptions, but we haven’t made it easy and nostr connected the way zaps are.

Somebody’s going to write a bot using AI that actually makes all the hallucinated software libraries that AI chat bots and other tools are trying to use. Then they’ll be able to put backdoors in them and we’ll have a security nightmare where there’s nobody ever to check the code that is being generated and used all through the new large language models.

Do you use and pay for buffer and also like Nostr? Why not encourage them to support Nostr.
This will mean something to them if you ARE a paying customer most, and secondarily if you would become one. If you’re not likely to use Buffer and pay them, then don’t post because that’s distraction for them instead of helping them know they’ve got paying current or future customers who want Nostr support.

There is both a fan created Cascadia Cup which while not endorsed by the league is a real thing. The teams and fans care about it.

And yes there is a regionalist movement which some people advocate for independence from Canada and the US. It’s got a flag and adherents. The polling for it is surprisingly strong, between 30% and 50% as a theoretical question, but there is no actual real proposal. If it came down to it who knows what the vote would be. That said nobody thought brexit would pass. I don’t think Cascadian independence is likely or a serious movement the way Scottish or Catalan independence movements are. Plus the region would have a lot of the same political polarization that exists in the US, except the power would be more strongly held in the cities which would cause resentment and opposition from rural conservatives. So meh. It’s exceedingly unlikely anything would happen.

After a couple horrible disappointing years we barely make it back to the playoffs. We hosted the MLS cup final and lost in penalties in 2022 and then fell apart. Nice to see the Timbers at least make it to the playoffs. The team is really different we went from a very conservative counter attacking side and solid defense to one with explosive shooting and almost no defense.

Any nostr user, regardless of what apps you use, can setup automatic cross posting to Twitter / X for free using connect.nos.social and use that to draw your twitter audience to Nostr. It posts using njump.me links which neutrally provides links to open the content in many different nostr apps.

Don’t abandon and delete your social media accounts elsewhere. Use those accounts to bring your audience to Nostr. That’s the way we grow, by bringing people over. If you delete your account and never post elsewhere it’s like you’ve gone dark to most people and that doesn’t help.

Google’s released a standalone tool that we saw in NotebookLM… it’s called Illuminate and it’s pretty nifty. We’re about to see ten million customized personalized podcasts… Some of it can be great, but it’s also going to be a big problem. Podcasts are hard to produce, so creating spam of podcasts wasn’t easy before, now it is.
Anyway, check it out, mind blowing how good it is. Other than recognizing some of the cadence and voices, it would never know it’s an entirely AI generated podcast.

There are times and places where i’m all in on the anarchist debauchery. And I want that to be able to happen on Nostr. But i think our social lives are so much broader and more complicated than that.
Take 4chan for example, the only channel i know of on there that’s unmoderated is https://boards.4chan.org/b/
The rest of the boards have norms and rules and moderation. They’ve got different ways of acting and rules for interaction.
Nostr has a web of trust model, you can choose who’s in your network, who you trust, and then who you don’t want to hear from.

This is a really important thing for us to keep in mind when we talk about how to make open protocols and open social media. Digital communities can die in many ways, but one of the most common is one person or a small group behaving in an antisocial way and slowly driving everybody out of the space. Nobody wants to put their foot down and tell them to stop posting off topic, or enforce some moderation rules using the platform. So people leave that space to them and drift away.
Enforcing rules in a specific space is often seen as censorship. This is a mistake. If I invite you to my birthday party and you get drunk and start yelling in some drunken rant at everybody else in the party, it’s not censorship to kick you out of the party. You’re more than welcome to continue your drunken rants elsewhere, but the birthday party is something i convened and should be able to enforce rules and norms over that space.
There’s a time and a place for drunken debauchery but if you do that in the wrong space it’ll ruin the vibe and everybody else will leave. It would be censorship if you were not able to organize your own space on Nostr or elsewhere online, where you couldn’t post and talk to people.

The new podcast tool / prototype out of google with their NotebookLM is amazingly good. Surreal. Everybody should play with it and check it out.

Essentially it’s a very easy UI to your own RAG which you can then query and work on in normal AI ways. But they’ve paired it up with SoundStorm and the conversational audio is much better than anything I’ve heard. There is no way i’d ever guess this is AI.

There’s tons of drama going on over in WordPress land. Private equity Silverlake has bought up and is running WP Engine. They’re apparently not contributing back to the WordPress Foundation as much as the foundation people think is fair. That much seems fine, but Mullenweg also seems to be wanting to completely destroy WP Engine to the point where his company Automatic can buy them up for pennies on the dollar. Getting companies to contribute to the open source the use seems good, but weaponizing trademark to try and destroy another company in the ecosystem seems really questionable.
It’s interesting to think about because we don’t have a Nostr foundation or trademark. How would we handle if private equity came in to the Nostr ecosystem and didn’t contribute? We don’t have clear expectations of the role of companies in the Nostr space, nor do we have a central company or foundation the way Word Press does.
I think it’s worth thinking about the best way to set up Nostr to handle this going forward. Many people here know the saga around Craig Wright and the struggle to define who and what bitcoin is… That feels somewhat similar as well.
What do people think is the best way to handle this?

The healthiest social media ecosystem is one you’ve probably never heard of. Front Porch Forum is a local social media platform focused on Vermont.
It’s hugely important to that community and has tremendous engagement. I think we could build something like it that ran on top of Nostr. Not all of Nostr of course, just the ability to make your own front porch fourm within the nostrverse. What do you think?

Meta has decided that users have been posting too much AI generated slop content and their solution is pretty unique. Not something I thought they’d do. They’re going to start posting their own AI generated content in your feed remixing everything they’ve seen you post.
How about pictures and videos of fishing trips with your friends that you never took? Who cares if you actually got tickets to the NBA final because Meta will generate content showing you court side!
This is worse than them spending billions on a leg less VR world.

This is somewhat similar to the experiments I’ve been doing with protest.net on nostr. So far I have ditto and flockstr but it’s not got the inward community focus figured out.
You said nip-07 but what I think you meant was nip46 hosted nsec bunker like how fountain works. Users can have their nsec but day to day it works like logging in to a normal service on the web. Think Coinbase service for nostr.

That is the origin of the name. From running protest.net and when we started the company that eventually became Twitter there were two Evan’s so I used the Unix user name I had from protest.net and it stuck. It is a bit weird but I enjoy having a mononym.

The US Constitution is a very statist and authoritarian document, especially as originally written. Only property owning white Christian men were allowed to participate in the political process and even then without direct elections. Look up Shey’s rebellion, the anarchist leaning failed revolution after the British were defeated in the war of independence in 1776. The Constitution ten years later in 1787, was an attempt at restoring a central government, essentially ending the original American political project of anti authoritarian direct democracy in New England.
