Now I'm waiting for the inspector from the county health department to approve my wastewater design so I can set the septic tank.
She said she would be here this morning, but it's now past noon, so she lied.
Probably could have had this job finished by now. But instead have to deal with fiat world bullshit.
I'm a state licensed soil scientist and a state licensed wastewater system installer. I've studied soil across four different states before graduating summa cum laude with an Agronomy degree. But more importantly, for 10 years now, I've been evaluating soil and designing septic systems, all of which are still functioning flawlessly. But I can't complete my work until some gen Z county employee who has only held her position for a few months, and who, judging from her questions over the phone, doesn't even know how to interpret her department's own paperwork yet, comes to the site to check and make sure I'm doing my job correctly. On top of that, she can't even show up when she says she will.
Fuck government at every level.

This is a typical Southern Missouri upland soil. A silt loam plow layer over a clay subsoil.

I had a rare morning off work with nowhere I had to be until afternoon. As I sat on the porch thinking about what to do with my time, two calves came walking down the dirt road.
I walked them back down the road where they went back through the hole in the fence they had escaped through.
So my morning activity was decided. I loaded my tools on the fence repair trailer, and patched some barbed wire fence.

Find a local farmer that sells beef directly to customers. And do it several months in advance of when you want the meat as it takes time to grow out an animal and butcher appointments are usually booked a few months out.
For legality reasons, you are technically purchasing the live animal and the rancher is transporting it to the processor on your behalf.
After the animal is slaughtered, skinned, and organs are removed, the carcass is hung in the cooler and weighed. This is hanging weight and is the value the price is calculated from.
In my area processing runs about $0.90 per pound. The rancher will charge a price per pound for the meat. Cattle prices are subject to fluctuation, but lately I've been pricing at $3.25 a pound. So, the customer is responsible for the meat price plus the processing fee (which usually includes a $50-$80 slaughter fee).
Good butchers will let the carcass hang for 10-14 days. During this time the customer will be asked how they want the meat cut (type of steaks, how many per package, roasts, which cuts to keep and which to grind into burger, etc.). Then the meat will be cut, frozen and ready for pick up.

Not much use for serious prying, but for small things that you might find yourself tempted to use your knife for, it's great. So it's basically just an insurance policy to keep you from breaking your knife tip.
I'm a woodworker, so it mainly gets used for opening paint cans. Surprisingly useful for scraping as well.

Finished up a productive day

Friday tends to be my wild card day. Any gig is on the table, and sometimes, like today, several gigs.
Worked til 3 this afternoon at the woodshop job. Today we were installing hardwood flooring. Then a couple hours taking care of a yard I mow weekly. Then I had a call from a guy needing me to pick some landscape gravel, so I went by the farm supply, loaded a couple ton of rock in the trailer, and dumped it at the customer's house.
Still had some daylight when I got home, so I strung up some electric fencing and moved the cows.

Here's what I might, possibly, hypothetically do. Only store the pin in my head, so it can't possibly be compromised.
Store seed phrase in 2-3 safe locations off-site. I also keep a spare, unused hardware device off-site. If something happens to me, my wife would be instructed to retrieve seed phrase and spare device, and restore from seed. If I forget my pin, restore from seed. If device gets stolen, restore from seed and transfer.
Simple-ish.

In Missouri, residential, rural septic systems fall under the jurisdiction of the county health departments. They require a soil morphology evaluation from a registered soil scientist before they will issue a permit. I'm one of the people that does these evaluations.

A degree is not required, but you do need 20 hours of college soil courses to get licensed. As a result, soil scientists are the guys that took the college path. And of course, guys that operate excavators did not go through the college route.
When I first got licensed, I didn't get many calls because the few old established soil scientists already had longstanding relationships with the installers. So what did I do? I got my installer's license, partnered with an equipment operator, and we started installing our own systems. He owned the equipment and did the digging, and I had the license, did the evaluations, and designed the systems.
Since then, I've gotten more calls for evaluations, I've become a decent equipment operator myself, I've added a dump trailer to my enterprise, and as far as I can tell, I'm the only soil scientist in the state that will do their own digging.
I share this story because I was listening to this podcast on the way to the job site today.

They talked a lot about the younger generation getting started today and not seeing a worthwhile end in sight.
When I was in my mid-twenties just starting out, I had in mind that I just needed the required license for my chosen line of work and then opportunities would just show up. But it didn't work that way.
I had to adapt. I had to tweak my business model, I had to add new skills to my repertoire. I have by no means "made it" or accomplished all my goals yet. But, now in my mid-thirties, I have reached a point where my end goals are faintly visible on the horizon. So it is possible.
I guess to sum it up in video game terminology, you have to slog your way through the wasteland and gain xp before you get to level up, but if you keep playing the game, you'll get there.

Well, that particular knife in the picture is one of a limited run that Ka-Bar did for a select group of users on Bladeforums several years ago. Some of them may have ended up on eBay for a high price.
But Ka-Bar has since put the BK-10 in regular production, so the standard model with the black handles can be found for under $100.

Just noticed this concrete cattle waterer was overflowing. I haven't been in this paddock for about two months, so I have no idea how long it's been running.
Had to dig to the shut-off valve to turn it off.

LOTR is definitely my favorite, both the films and the books.
I tend to prefer science fiction and fantasy, but will enjoy anything with intriguing plot, original characters and convincing world-building.
I have grown tired of obvious agendas, "deconstructions," "subverting expectations," "post-modern takes on ..." and dragging actors out of retirement to shoot a sequel of that movie that was big 20 years ago because nostalgia is an easy sell. Let's just go back to good storytelling that's not pretentious.

Yep. That's what I do. I grazed through all my paddocks at the start of winter to delay having to feed hay as long as possible.
Now I need to give the fresh grass a bit of a head start before I start rotating the cattle for this season.
