In light of the recent public discussions about the GNOME board member suspension, someone on Reddit was looking forward to the release of COSMIC to get away from unnecessary "politics" in free software.
Probably not having realized that COSMIC is one of the most significant results of community politics gone wrong in the modern free computing space.

I know a lot of people switched to the new #Adwaita fonts right after their conception, but I've actually sticked with Cantarell 'till the very end except for some light testing. Just upgraded to the latest Fedora beta with the new fonts, and it's a whole new world!
This is the culmination of years of discussion and research by many people, but @npub1dkh…rxra deserves a special thanks for spearheading this particular solution and pushing the initiative over the finish line once and for all.

In my utopian CSD world, Spotify would of course use a proper header bar, but for now I'd be fine with something that does not give me the same vibes as when Windows Vista decorations leak through an old system component on Windows 11.

Context for non-developers: the metainfo file is a document where apps provide information for app stores, e.g. the app name, developer name, description, icon, screenshot URLs, supported screen sizes, etc. The longest section of this document is usually the one containing release notes , so I've always thought that everyone put it last. However, I've had to scroll past years of releases to get to basic info such as website URLs and age ratings for some apps, even ones in GNOME's core set.

Currently on a metainfo crusade throughout the GNOME ecosystem to fix some quirks and make apps look their best on apps.gnome.org, and I just found out that putting stuff *below* the <releases> section of app metainfo files is apparently a totally normal thing to do!? We could really use some more people going through this stuff 🤨

One of the most important lessons in volunteer-driven development is that motivation isn’t commutable. If a contributor hadn’t worked on thing Y, that doesn’t automatically mean that they would have dedicated their time to thing Z instead.
It’s not a given that people are equally motivated for everything.

I've said this before, and I'll gladly reiterate my hot take:
Your website should not have a light/dark mode toggle.
Please just make it follow the system preference instead. If there is a reason your site is so special that someone would want to use a different color scheme for it than everything else on their system, you should still make it possible to have the site follow the system color scheme. Not even Reddit does this right 😄

To add to this: It might seem weird that a *font* needs to be *maintained*, but the font tech space has evolved a lot since the last time Cantarell recieved any serious updates. Inter supports fancy new OpenType features that would be very useful for GNOME, and Cantarell probably won't ever have these added. That happening would be an unnecessary duplication of efforts when Inter is already considered appropriate for usage by GNOME and has these.

Seems like there is some interest in having a local #GNOME meetup in #Oslo 🇳🇴, where I live. Not a hackfest or anything Berlin-level (yet), just an informal meeting in an easily accessible place, for both contributors and anyone else who is interested and happens to live nearby.
Does anybody here have any previous experience with this? What is it like? What is there to talk about? What kinds of venues are best suited? Any other useful pieces of advice? I could go on and on… 😂

It's not long until the 1st of June, so why not pick up the guitar and learn some catchy tunes for the summer? I've just published version 7.0 of Fretboard, which brings more accurate chord name prediction, note names on hover for the neck top toggles, and a couple of fixes for various small issues encountered since last release. It should be on Flathub very soon!
