Last Notes npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak OK, so this is a serious question linked to my masters degree. What do you think makes good writing? #WritingCommunity #bookstodon npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1fax…nse3 @npub1l8f…9lph @npub10s2…ljew my boyf was looking at a bunch of doctors using phones to do machine vision stuff, not really knowing enough about the tech and looking for help, but not finding a way to join up with researchers in the field, who all seem to want big machines, big power, big money, big fame, I guess, but veering away from practical solutions that actually work. I don't really know anything about this myself though. I am not techy, I just listen and I get some of it. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1qpj…mwvw @npub10n9…tjug first novels take longer? Mine took ten years, although I did write a whole nother book within that time. These days I expect writing a book to take around a year. First drafts take most of that time - revision/editing is infinitely quicker/easier (for me). npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1p4u…rq25 I do not usually set deadlines. I have a vague idea that finishing a draft in less than a year is preferable, but not obligatory. I am very confident that the book will get finished because all of them have. In the end, I write books for my amusement so the process ought to be amusing - and by amusing I mean head-fuckingly challenging, because that's how I get my kicks. Being flexible rather than uptight is essential for creative expression. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1p4u…rq25 I haven't done word count goals much, or writing every day. These days I tend to have an idea of how long the book will end up being and a rough timescale, based on how long it has taken to write previous books, but it's never set in stone. Last year I tried word count goaling in earnest for the first time so I could finish my book before starting my masters degree. It worked and I was surprised, but it would have been OK if it hadn't. It's not good to get uptight about these things. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1rku…sqsh no deadlines at all. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1rku…sqsh this sounds like the kind of thing I am looking for. It's worth a try at the very least. If it doesn't work I can just write them serially so there is no loss whatever happens. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1a0v…m5vj I doubt very much I can finish anything in that time, but it doesn't really matter. I can pick it up again when I have time again. These stories are so very different, I can kind of see them intersecting in a weird way. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1rku…sqsh that's interesting. How so? I kind of think I know what you're getting at, but not completely sure. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1yls…0rw0 I plot while drafting too, although never formally. It helps me to know i have something to write when 'this one' is done. Thing is, I haven't written anything yet this year because too busy. I have 5 weeks now with nothing to do, so... npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub15wt…7rek I do that too, more or less exactly (except for the editor part). I just currently have a new idea on top of an existing idea, and nothing to edit, since I haven't written anything at all this year yet. Thought I'd give it a try. It will probably end up with drafting two beginnings and choosing one to carry on with first. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub15ax…lqq5 I do like the idea of switching projects when stuck. It might be a really good use of time. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1a0v…m5vj I've never tried it before. I have 5 weeks to write and have been imagining a story for a while, but another idea has just presented itself... npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #WritingCommunity What does everyone think about the idea of writing two books at the same time? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1pur…68ze my curries all taste the same though. I need to go on a course or something! My Pakistani friend taught me how to make curry a looong time ago. Surprising amounts of spices and cooking them dry before adding liquid is key. My garden is full of coriander too, because fresh coriander is possibly the best thing ever. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1pur…68ze coriander, cumin, methi seeds, ginger, turmeric. And lots of fresh chillies. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1huu…vyxe actually, I always make enough for two days on purpose. But the second day it usually tastes better. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak I have such a hard time promoting my art. Do you think artistic expression is less valid if the artist isn't pushing it and getting recognition through that? I just want to be a quiet artist, you know? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1kj7…qvw4 this is because education is such a political issue. In the UK certainly, all the politicians want education to be the magic that makes society fair - and they put pressure on schools and teachers to do this, even thought the evidence clearly shows that what makes society fair is, you know, society being fair. And none of them want to vote for that in case their rich sponsors stop sponsoring them so they don't get voted in next time. A teacher's job is to know all that and do it anyway. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub18lx…sf8r I've given up writing on purpose for two years to do a masters degree while working full time. I was writing for 20 years or so before that and will again after. It's just a break to spend my time doing other things - nothing to do with distractions. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak My kid (14) showed me this. He loves maths. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NOCsdhzo6Jg npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub18lx…sf8r not writing, not editing, not promoting. I'm toying with story ideas a little because in only three weeks this madness will be over, it will be summer and I might be able to write a book. I can't believe it yet though. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Discussion with kid in my class (age 10) today. Me: do you think you'll move house again? Him: well yes, because when you rent a house they only let you stay there for a while, like a year or six months. Ffs British housing policy. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1gs3…ccez I wrote two books fairly recently with only one voice, first person. One of them, you know quite a lot what he looks like because he looks at himself a lot and cares. The other one, you don't get to find out much about what she looks like because she isn't interested in that. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1gs3…ccez I love it when characters have different perceptions of other characters. And also, if you have a big cast, you can patchwork character's perceptions of someone, so the reader gets a whole picture. You can also contrast the way a character sees themselves with the way others see them. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1gs3…ccez I just like any use of language that is unusual and makes me think. I only ever describe characters from the point of view of another character (or mostly these days), so it's all about what that character notices about them at that moment. I try to get the quality of the person, or the other characters perception of them, into the description, but also, I imagine real people sometimes, and details I notice about them. Details. I very rarely mention things like eye and hair colour. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak You know that thing when you're a teacher and you climb on stuff to put up displays, and always think about what would happen if you fell off? Today I fell off. I was absolutely fine, but my colleague witness was VERY freaked out. #teaching npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Does anyone else's kid think the any of the questions on the A level maths test of today is 'cute'? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1y4k…mwvn do or do not. There is no try. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1y4k…mwvn no. It's a metaphor for the ability to love. You're just trying to be funny. I get that. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub192d…7tgc I don't do villains, so it doesn't work for me, but I might possibly have a smaller character all eaten up with desire for revenge, maybe, or a character who seeks revenge as an underlying motive at a point but amongst other things which take over in importance. I'm a primary school teacher, so my experience of revenge is young children getting it wrong. It's not something I think of in relation to adults. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak OK #WritingCommunity, what do you think of revenge as a motivator for characters in stories? Having discussed it a bit with some other folks, I find I am not keen at all. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1cz0…wk5s what are your merpeople like? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1cz0…wk5s I have a bunch of friends on twitter, I guess, who I've known for a while. But even if no-one's around, there is always someone asking an interesting question (along with a LOT of people asking less interesting questions). People don't seem to do that question thing on mastodon. Answering a question often leads to a conversation. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1m9l…9vkv I've had mood swings my whole life, so who knows? Also get very hot, or used to - seems to possibly have stopped? Hard to tell, cos you get used to things. Forgetful? Also, my whole life, so... npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub15gj…j6gk I am kind of cheered by the honest expression of a heterosexual bloke. It seems rare. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub15ax…lqq5 to be honest, when I came here, I wanted to get away from the 'writing community' on twitter with their constant recycling of the same discussion topics and find something new. There are some amazing people around here for sure, but it seems harder to make connections. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1m9l…9vkv my friend at work was saying she was starting to get all the menopause things, and I was surprised because she's only a bit younger than me and I'm pretty much finished with all that. I think. It's kind of hard to tell. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub15ax…lqq5 I do have a lot of followers on twitter, but everyone says 'the algorithm' contrives that you only interact with a subset. I had a lot of time to spend on twitter during lockdown - don't have anything like that now, so maybe that explains it. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1duc…kt36 this looks hopelessly cool. I'm passing it on to my 17 year old daughter. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub15gj…j6gk once you've activated the slow cooker, there's no reason not to get back to the boobs. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Does anyone ever just, like, chat on mastodon? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub12xr…psum totally. My kid has started eating curry recently. I always ask him, shall I put fewer chillis in it this time? And he always says, yes please. And I always put in the same number as always, or maybe a couple more. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Feeling like this today. It's all gone. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1huu…vyxe I have a kid in my class called Faith. It's a constant earworm I have zero problem with. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak First rhubarb crumble from the rhubarb in the garden that I planted two years ago. These are the important things. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Was feeling miserable due to being overtired and having a scarily monumental workload currently, only to be cheered up by a review of one of my books by a fellow indie writer friend from twitter, whose book I really enjoyed too. This is what they mean by #WritingCommunity, folks. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1lcv…y33a blimey! I've never tried dating apps - that sounds terrifying! npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak MY PEAS HAVE SPROUTED!! npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1mex…qtcz I think it's kind of scary the way they talk about 'the science of reading'. Research shows that most children can learn to read without phonics. In the UK, an increasing narrowing of the curriculum to focus on phonics has led to no overall improvement in reading, and the tide is beginning to turn against phonics, far from it being seen as a 'science'. If children can't answer a real life maths question, it's generally because they don't understand the language, not the maths. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1kfq…wrn0 lots of people have issues, and bad days. She was an older woman. Maybe she used to run, but then it did for her knees and her ankles - who knows? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1kfq…wrn0 this morning a woman walking her dogs told me rather angrily, 'it's bad for your knees and your ankles' as I ran past her. But it's good for my mental health and my pelvic floor, is what I should have replied. Also, I don't think it IS bad for my knees and my ankles anyway, but I guess she was entitled to her opinion. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub107u…6km9 it was actually surprisingly cool. The band played in a closed car park to an audience of about 5 people. Stewards stood at the entrance to the car park telling people to park elsewhere, despite the car park being almost empty. The main event was in a field next to the car park where there was a big screen and some big tents but very few people. The band played really well, and the kid was amused by the irony of them playing Mr Blue Sky in the rain. And then we left. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak @npub1ggh…ykhp I am not doing things on purpose very much today. This is because I just has a very intense period of unexpectedly applying for a new job, having an interview and ultimately not getting the job (first I've applied for in 13 years) but learning a mind-blowing amount that I am still trying to figure out and will be for some time. And my new college module starts this weekend (technically Tuesday, but...). Today I'm just editing some old books, doing gardening and baking sourdough. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] we used to have a sport teacher at my school who explained the idea from some famous footballer that 'practice makes permanent'. I always liked that. If you do the same thing over and over it becomes permanent, like, fixed. But take care you are not practising doing it wrong. Lots of people do that. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] so very very glad I gave up ever wearing earrings. But this is a powerful sentiment I can only applaud. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Cheerful Daddy: Is that a big ten four or a big ten five? Sarcastic teenage child: I have no idea what any of that means. Cheerful Daddy: So that's a big ten six, then? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak Curse you, commas. Honestly. My commas journey is so very very long. It's embarrassing. #[0] #[1] #[2] npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] #[1] I mostly read self published books. Idk, there are so many books and so little time. I don't believe trad published books are categorically better, some people have privileged access, you know? But I would say that a LOT of self published books are not so good. That doesn't bother me. I don't believe in gatekeeping. Anyone can publish and that's how it should be. I love to connect with other authors through reading their books - can't do that with trad. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] I did the exercising thing, went for a coffee with the boyf and am now trying not to stress too much about having to prepare multiple things for job interview on Wednesday. Job interview. This is not something I usually do. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak This is my Rumpelstiltskin retelling, if you like that kind of thing. It has much heartbreak, magic, stories within stories and none of that soppy happily-ever-after type stuff. https://mybook.to/Rum https://media.mas.to/masto-public/media_attachments/files/110/215/900/634/288/338/original/baed34e32f4012ec.jpeg npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] I had a conversation on another social media site about inventing history for fantasy worlds, and I said that I don't know the history. My characters don't know the history, partly because they are kids, but mostly because nobody ever knows the 'true' history of anything, but only the versions of it that are available to them. In the UK the history taught in schools is the version the government want us to believe, for sure. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] I get what you mean about systemic evil. I am very keen on worlds with unknowable systems - because all real world systems are way too complex for any one person to understand. I think such things arise and exist not generally because of evil, but remain because people who might have the power to change them don't recognise that they are, in fact, evil. I also mostly write about poor people who have multitudinous problems that are never going to get fixed, because again, real world. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] I (almost) never do villains. I don't like the idea of 'an antagonist' in a story. I think antagonists ought to be round every corner, and uncountable. I don't like to believe in evil in real life, so I tend to portray conflict between people/forces who oppose because of different wants/needs, rather than one is 'good' and one 'bad'. My favourite review ever describes my characters all as a mixture of hero, villain and person needing rescue. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] I don't think so. I don't use a lot of description in my writing - I like to find out about people mainly through what they say and do, and introspection goes along with action too. I consider pretty much the whole thing to be 'story' to be honest. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak #[0] the alt text is crucial to understanding this image. Now I get it. npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak All I can say is, I wish I was more keen on science fiction. I just did this gender balance online quiz thing (I know, but it's the holidays and I'm kind of at a loose end) and I came out non-binary with a slight feminine bias, so maybe that explains it? npub1wvaae9nzs5ydzv5lzmqqymdzca56qlk6skfy0u8q6thxn06usnasjwtju8 Naomi Heartbreak I'm a big fan of indie published books. I was just hanging with my indie author friends on twitter, whose books I've read, because I love to read indie books. Not doing so well finding y'all on mastodon though. Hi indie authors! #[0]
