I was surprised that a book from 1951 would have such a strong #dnd vibe, but Naomi Mitchison's TRAVEL LIGHT really delivers a compelling story
EDIT: Although TRAVEL LIGHT doesn't show up in 1e's Appendix N, it does seem that Mitchison's work in general is listed in the "Inspirational Reading" list in the D&D Immortals Rules from 1985
EDIT2: "She was also a good friend of the writer J. R. R. Tolkien, and one of the proof readers of The Lord of the Rings." ok yeah it's all coming together (from her Wikipedia page)
