The “reality” you describe is an unknowable fantasy. What examples of this reality can you point to from history?. I’m sure we agree on a lot of things but being that this “reality” is impossible and never going to happen, so why be so anchored to ideological purism?
The reason I entered this discussion is because you picked a very bad example for your “clown world” meme.

Plastic bag pollution harms all of us.
In my country the gov added a tax to plastic bags 10 years ago, it has reduced their numbers by billions.
The outcome is objectively better and widely supported. It’s one of the only positive things the government has done.
I’m sorry that it doesn’t fit nicely into your ideology, but thankfully rational pragmatism triumphed.

At least plastic packaging serves a purpose, it’s not ideal and we need to create better packaging or even go back to using glass jars etc.
Single use plastic carrier bags serve no purpose other than placating our laziness.
Once you’re in the habit of having a few reusable shopping bags in your car or even a small one in your pocket you don’t even remember using store plastic bags. Or you can usually take a cardboard box from the store to carry stuff in if you’re really stuck.
Capitalist consumerism incentivises laziness in the name of convenience and our environment and health pay the cost. Plastic === cancer

I wonder if a Facebook style friend model is worth exploring. The idea that you just connect with someone and it’s both ways could flatten the hierarchy. If you want to ‘follow’ someone you agree for them to follow you. Could be a very different dynamic. Imagine if Elon mush had to reciprocate each of his follows 😂
Perhaps it would require a change in protocol and maybe it’s a totally bad idea. But would be interesting to explore.

I guess it’ll be very much up to user choice, we can’t stop clients being built that are effectively chocolate ice cream for our minds. But we can build clients that are nutritionally balanced and allow educated users to make that choice.
Also I do believe that some of the charitable orgs fighting against social media damage might well be willing to fund and support Nostr client development, they are perhaps unaware of Nostr and in need of educating.

Nostr clients like #damus have a Twitter like UI because we are all used to using Twitter. However, Twitter and other social media UIs were developed with the goal of capturing and monetising attention. Using addictive ui tropes like “pull down to refresh”, to keep us hooked, milking our attention for their advertisers.
Could #nostr be an opportunity to rethink some of these established ui trends and optimise for user wellbeing rather than manipulating our addictive nature? #asknostr
I’m finding damus almost more addictive than Twitter, partly because the content is less toxic and irrelevant to me. I can’t spend too long ontwitter because I’m put off by a lot of the content, despite the UX’s best attempts to keep me addicted.
Damus doesn’t have this repellant part of the equation so I find myself endlessly scrolling bitcoin memes.

It wasn’t an entirely serious idea 😂. I was thinking unzaps would be more like downvotes. It’s not taking your zap back. It’s like taking sats from the OP.
It would complexity things. Perhaps zaps could be held in an escrow for an amount of time. Allowing sats to be added and removed. Downvoting ‘unzaps’ should also have a cost to the user as well as the OP to prevent abuse.
So if I unzap you 50 sats. I pay 50 sats but it also costs you 50 sats. Perhaps those 100 sats could go to fund the devs or simply get burned somehow.
It’s probably entirely unworkable, but it’s worth thinking about what the potential downsides of zapping might be and how to mitigate them.

I’ve been an avid #apple user since 1984. I’m fully aware of the issues with their walled garden and App Store policies. But the products work well and none of that has negatively impacted me.
