Listen up. It is ridiculous that the default custody relationship for newbies is still a trusted 3rd party (who they don't even really know - it's just a faceless corporation).
We should absolutely have solved this ages ago so that the default choice is trustless, robust, user friendly and ON CHAIN (& LN).
Bitcoin is a world where every user can be assumed to have a pocket supercomputer.
We have universal and free access to beyond bank vault level security. Plus timelocks, plus multisig, plus hidden alternate spend paths. When done properly it's more secure than their fiat balance.
Yes key based security is new to most and the unfamiliar is scary. Yes, great companies and products have emerged to address this with hardware and software and services. But, it's almost 2025 and the default position on self custody is still FEAR.
We've fucked up.

Think from the other direction: covenants are useful not just to restrict your own spending, but mainly because you can prove to a counterparty that you cannot spend it any other way. This removes a layer of trust, that currently we can only solve with multisigs, but with that comes a bunch of interactivity requirements.

I get the tradeoffs you’re trying to make, but it seems to be setting people up for trouble? Surely a better UX gently introducing them to address validation etc is better? If not, isn’t this closer to the legacy system than Bitcoin’s ethos?

From the other direction, spiritual folks have had the concept of the soul since forever, but it’s obviously hard to put into scientific terms. However-
1. On that Lex podcast above, Levin describes a feature of death that seems to make no evolutionary sense - beings will give up and die when their situation seems hopeless, but in identical situations when they still have hope, it demonstrates they have plenty of energy to fight (example experiment with rats trapped in water, some taught that if they hold on long enough they get rescued). Why ever have ANY instinct to give up if the goal is to perpetuate your genes, surely any cost is worth paying? That does sound a lot like a video game player resetting the game, though…

This totally misses the wood for the trees!
Either: your consciousness/personality is an emergent phenomenon resulting from the community of cells that make up your body - think like how countries can have a character, or toxic bitcoin maximalists - in which case without the cells there is nothing.
Or: consciousness is something originating outside the body and maybe 3D space itself, you might use the term “soul”, in which case they voluntarily elect to constrain themselves inside physical bodies for some purpose - some say just to experience the universe, or experience struggle and hardship, perhaps to provide more meaningful existence.
Notice how in bitcoin we voluntarily constrain ourselves down from the huge scope of the Wild West internet, into this very limited system, because it gives our interactions more significance, so much so that we can use it as money, the foundation layer of society…

Cos it’s still custodial, just much less bad type of custodial. You’re not transacting sats, but sats IOUs.
Conceptually just like fiat started out, which worked ok until the rugpulls.
That said, the people working on bitcoin ecash are smart, realistic, know its weaknesses and are working to mitigate them.
I think Calle had an idea for provable reserves, which would eliminate the creeping fractional reserve risk.

Maybe I’m naive, but Ray just doesn’t seem the type.
He *says* that a ton of accounts are frozen by US regulators, and there’s simply nothing he can do for those until they’re unfrozen. The US also insists they’re not allowed to tell the customers why they are frozen.
Heartbreaking to read the comments though. If it can lead more people to learn self custody at least there’s a positive in the long run.

I think you still have the power to turn it around, but it’s a slim outside chance now. You have the least docile, domesticated population (still not great though). There is still a strong spirit of innovation, it’s just been misdirected by fiat. You would need the right political figure to claw their way into power and just act like a rational human being. I’m not confident that will be allowed to happen though.
The outcome is probably something like the UK, clinging to illusions of past grandeur whilst other nations with less baggage rise. Bullish on Latin America.

Yes could be. Today we have archival + discovery + antispam all jumbled up in the same relay services. I guess over time the market evolves to some specialists in long term storage (different duration options? Just your own home relay?), some in discovery (we will host anyone for 20 sats but delete after 1 week) etc

Nostriches, one thing I don’t understand is how relays wouldn’t just have a perpetually growing storage requirement. Multiply redundant storage is wasteful until the one day it’s needed and today the incentive is to spam notes to many relays for discoverability and redundancy. Paid relays kinda solves it but imperfectly. What’s the long term vision here?

A plausible cause for the level of existential fear needed to cover the coming money printing & control centralisation is not aliens, but AI.
We are already being primed for it the last year.
Imagine: genuine public belief in a non-physical intelligence that knows everything and could control anything. To most people, that’s a god.
Either it “gains access” to dangerous hardware, or it “takes down” some digital infrastructure.
The “only defence” will be to cryptographically restrict all digital services to real humans and the “only authority capable” of ensuring they’re real humans is government.

On some artefacts we see levels of precision close to modern CNC. For some of the biggest objects like the Unfinished Obelisk there is no organically occurring material that could be woven into rope strong enough to pull it. You need steel cables.
Yet these guys made and shipped these things 500 miles like it was nothing. Not to mention hauling them up out of the quarry beds in the first place. To do it today we’d need several of our largest strongest mobile cranes - think of the many complex layers of industry that exists to produce those cranes.
There is SO much more to Egypt than the narrative pushed in the history books. Proof of work all the way down.

‘Bout to blow your mind.
They weren’t built by slaves, most likely the brute labour was local farmers with little to do during the flood season. They were treated well. A lot is highly skilled craftsmanship.
They were masters with specialist tools which we’ve barely begun to scratch the surface of, these monuments are not dumb piles of rocks.
The proof is in the work: you see signatures of extremely thin saw blades with FAST feed rates, so fast they overcut by INCHES - by hand that would be a whole day’s sawing. You see very high torque/low speed drilling, extremely precise surface and angle work, complex joinery. Painstakingly shaping very hard stones to mate perfectly to the naturally weathered surfaces of softer stones - completely ass-backwards, at least to us with our techniques.
Interior chamber layouts demonstrate complex knowledge of acoustics, possibly industrial chemistry and metallurgy.
This is not done by hand tools made from copper by simple people and it’s all probably MUCH older than ~4500 years.
