Its actually interesting that you mentioned an old linux pc. The old part really matters imo. Who knows what kind of hardware based survailance crap newer PCs/chips/motherboards have. Even airgaped, I still trust an older pc more. It might be silly, but I think there were times when there was not as much survailance incentives by the hardware makers. I might be completely wrong and its just wishful thinking 😅

Comparing that with my skydiving adventure yesterday, the Cessna 206 Turbine airplane can climb at 350m per minute with 6 passengers plus the pilot.
Just feels out of this world how much energy is in kerosine, compared to the risotto I had for lunch.

Just a better work flow for prepping and publishing a long post. Using a text editor/note app is ok. It would just be more convinient to have it in a nostr app (better real previews, embeding images etc).
Apart from writing, the reading is also a feature I would like, as farcas I know there is no app thatvwill let you filter and look at only long notes/blogs...

Do you think we have all the tools to achieve something like this already at hand and they just werent put together correctly yet?
Or are we looking for a completely new idea out of the box that would simplify this?
I am surprised for one that bitcoin style seed words arent used more as backups for nsecs, that is one way to kinda simplify it. When I am onboarding a user to nostr for example I would say: "now just save your nsec to your password manager", 90℅ of the time the reply is: " what is a password manager" 🤣

So there its not just a firewall when crossing the border? There is some internal filtering going on as well? Or is it more of the case that Iran lacks domestic infrastructure and the international cutoff just broke a lot of basic services (like dns) because they were rellying on foreign services,apis...etc and thats why there are internal issues?
It would be great if some of your friends could give a better overview of this.

Here is my rundown of unique #privacy coins (not copycats like piratechain, zano etc).
#Zcash - great mobile wallet, but pain in the ass to run a node (and use it as a wallet), hope this gets better with zebrad.
#Pivx - great desktop wallet with good tor support (can also run masternode on .onion), but no good mobile wallet (correct me if Im wrong?).
#Firo - good desktop wallet, bad network privacy (masternodes on clearnet), mobile wallet is "ok" but being developed actively.
#Monero - mobile wallets are "ok", running a node is "ok", the decoy privacy isnt great, looking forward to the upcoming FCMP upgrade to improve this.
For onboarding noobs Zcash wins by far because of the good UX of #zashi wallet, it " just works".

yeah true, but having an easy tool means every noob can do it... 😅 Still it would be a usefull tool. It would also be nice to have a backup nsec already, and you already sign an event now that that is your backup. So in case you get hacked/lose your primary key, people already know what is your backup. But actually this should be done on some blockchain, so you have a reliable timestamp that you signed that in the past. There should be a nip for this 😍

A good obvservable metric would be, when it maintains a stable price against bitcoin for lets say 5 years+. So for example, lets say BTC/Shitcoin is always around 0.0005 BTC +/-10%, if its able to maintain roughly that price long term I would say that it stopped being a shitcoin since it maintains the purchasing power, so even if you use it, then forget about it for a year, you still have the same purchasing power as holding btc. So far all of them are bleeding against bitcoin or oscilating (on a downward path) a bit. So even if the tech of the shitcoin is useful for something you need, people still just use it for that isolated purpuse and then move back to btc.
I think the main reason for none of them to achieve this is that we are still very early, most of the use is still speculative instead of real daily use... Some will technically always bleed if they have infinite inflation baked in.

In the beginning I hated it, I supported the zclassic fork and later on the zen (horizen) forks, that ditched the dev tax. But today, seeing all the magic zero knowledge stuff they developed, I could say the dev tax was a good idea. Also since zclassic is gone, zen also just became a base token, ditching the privacy stuff. I guess it was a good idea to fund all this development...

2025-08-24 07:14:41 GMT

- reply

Yes, thats what I meant by inside the shielded pool, z-2-z. I agree with you that a lot of work is needed still.
To comment on the t (transparent addresses), I personaly like that they exist, it gives more flexibility. If a merchant only accepts t and you send from z, you still have sender privacy if you are doing it right. If you just buy zcash, shield it and then spend the whole amount at a merchant to a t address then of course you didn't do much, since you are exposed the in/out timing/amounts. But if you bought 100zec today, shielded it, then a week later bought a coffee for 0.01zec, spend it to a t address, your privacy is on another level. So there is a big difference if you just make a "hop" through zcash or use the ecosystem long term. Same would apply to monero.
So its not black and white, none of them is magic privacy, you still have to know what you are doing...

2025-08-23 22:28:40 GMT

- reply

Just different tech. The transaction inside the shielded pool give out 0 information (zero knowledge proof crazy math stuff).
Monero relies on decoy transactions, much less private, more attack vectors for snooping, but there is an upgrade coming (onchain membership proofs) that will bring monero closer to zcash privacy wise...

2025-08-23 22:25:16 GMT

Good article 🤙
I would just add, that its still good we have lightning, even if there are hubs, you at least always have the option to run a node.
But privacy wise it sucks, especially receiver privacy. I hope this can get fixed, but I doubt its even possible...

2025-08-23 22:14:05 GMT

- reply

zcash is better for privacy, but monero is more widely accepted.
With the latest Zashi wallet for zcash, it became much easier to use, private transactions are default.
The 21m cap on zcash kinda convinced me to learn more about it, I dont like the infinite no cap supply on monero...

2025-08-23 22:04:53 GMT

- reply

Just a correction, the latest shielded pool (orchard) does not rely on the trusted setup anymore, it exist since 2022...
Under network security I would emphasise more the issue of tor not being better implemented at the moment. The latest Zashi wallet added tor, but its still not implemented on the nodes side as much one would like for a privacy coin...

2025-08-23 08:16:39 GMT

I see your point, but one could argue that showing your IP to peers (your chat contacts) isnt such a big deal. Or even to all the peers, as long as the content is encrypted.
I tried session a few times, but often had connectivity issues. The deal breaker with session right now is the group functionality, you can't generate an invite link, you can only add people manually - which sucks for onboarding. There are communities, but someone has to host a server and that part is a bit more complex and if I understand correctly the community runs over https directly to the person hosting it, bypassing the relay network ( I might be wrong on this?)

Thanks for the explanation, no problem for venting :)
I am curious if its even possible to prevent this, since the data is being hiding with creative methods. Lets say you make a filter to prevent jpegs in the taprot witness data, but then the spamers just change it to png, or just invent some new encoding that is always dodging the filter.
What do you think?

2025-08-18 06:35:28 GMT

- reply

I am slowly starting to understand this a bit more, so there are two main ways to store data in the bitcoin blockchain (right?).
1. OP_RETURN - provably unspendable, the data is not part of the utxo set and can be pruned (even if you have a full node you could prune this in theory, since it doesn't affect consensus).
2. Encoding it in outputs - creating outputs with scriptPubKey that look spendable syntactically but are actually unspendable in practice. From Bitcoin’s point of view, these outputs look like valid spendable coins, so they get added to the UTXO set. But since the “keys” to spend them don't exist, they are forever unspendable. That means they sit in the UTXO database forever, wasting space and resources for every full node.
So lets say some illegal data enters the chain and the police visits you because you run a full node, or you are a miner...etc. In case of OP_RETURN you can dump that data since it doesn't affect consensus. In case the data is in the outputs you can't just dump it, because it affects consensus.
So to my understanding, lets assume there will always be people that want to spam the chain and they will find a way to do so and spamming in the outputs can't be prevented anyway. It seems wiser to let them use OP_RETURN (doesn't hurt as much) instead of spamming the utxo set (it hurts).
Am I missing something?
Btw are these patches enabled in knots by default or do you need to set it in the config?

2025-08-17 21:02:16 GMT

Do you maybe know what is meant by the opreturn being provably prunable? Does that mean only pruned nodes discard this data? Or do all nodes ditch it at some point?
Or in other words, a new node that is syncing, will it fetch this data or ignore it?
Still didn't figure this part out :)

I don't get it entirely... They also have to censor if the data is in a bogus output of a multisig tx, in that case its even worse since it becomes part of the utxo set. Right? Or am I missing something?

Refrencing to this https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/master/doc/release-notes/release-notes-0.9.0.md
OP_RETURN and data in the block chain
On OP_RETURN: There was been some confusion and misunderstanding in the community, regarding the OP_RETURN feature in 0.9 and data in the blockchain. This change is not an endorsement of storing data in the blockchain. The OP_RETURN change creates a provably-prunable output, to avoid data storage schemes -- some of which were already deployed -- that were storing arbitrary data such as images as forever-unspendable TX outputs, bloating bitcoin's UTXO database.
Storing arbitrary data in the blockchain is still a bad idea; it is less costly and far more efficient to store non-currency data elsewhere.

Im trying to research this a bit, do you have any additional thoughts on this?
To my current understanding its better to store data in opreturn since it is prunable. Otherwise the dickpicks end up in the multisig tx outputs which are then unspendable and bloat the utxo set. Is my understanding correct?
