On my aging laptop, that's a jump from ~400 MBps to 1 GBps.

I have advocated for bcrypt many time specifically for this. If you can't deploy bcrypt, enforce an upper limit in your authentication form. 100 characters is stupidly more than enough, even for long passphrases.

Seriously annoyed with Mattermost at the moment. While idling, it'll regularly consume 10-15% CPU. When focused and active, 30% CPU utilization is common. Worse, it chews through memory until my kernel starts executing OOM.
Can you find in this screenshot where navigated away from the Mattermost browser tab then back? And no, the Electron desktop app is not any better. Worse actualy, because it sits at a constant 10-15% CPU even when the window is not focused.

Signed up for The Rut 50K in Big Sky, MT.
This is race is considered by some to be the most challenging 50K in the United States. Others think it's the Speedgoat 50K, held in Salt Lake City, UT.

This Gist is just about the mathematics of brute force rates.
It would be interesting to add the cost of these rates, however. If I could get verifiable data on how much the hardware, cooling, and electricity costs for each project, then we could say something about realistic models for faceless government orgs and their brute force power.

2**128 bits ÷ 2**bits/year
So if Bitcoin is currently busting through 94.762 bits annually, then:
2**128 bits ÷ 2**94.762 bits/year ~= 10130595988.167854 years
Or about 10.131 billion years.
No doubt the rate is increasing, so that number will keep dropping, but the Gist isn't making any predictions, only showing current rates.

I did something similar when I was a Red Hat instructor/examiner using mdraid and LVM back in 2008-2010.
It wasn't as simple as "zpool export" and "zpool import" (RHEL doesn't support ZFS), but the general idea was the same.
1. Setup RAID, LVM, fs.
2. Mount and write data.
3. Unmount, tear down LVM and RAID.
4. Shuffle drives.
5. Reinsert and reassemble.
6. Mount and read data.
Always a fun demo to make.
These were the exact USB drives I used. 2 GB PNY drives with sheaths removed.

Right now, I'm just working on USB drives, which don't support Secure Erase nor TRIM, which prompted the post.
The last I had to do this with SSDs, Intel, Samsung, and Toshiba all supported Secure Erase fine, but there were some cheaper brands that didn't. And if I recall correctly, some older models of Kingston didn't either. I want to say some OEM SSDs "supported" Secure Erase, like Dell and HP, but failed when attempting to use it.

In my experience, Secure Erase is a mixed bag. Some SSDs support it, some don't. Some have implemented it correctly some haven't.
OS overwrite always works. I can write a UDEV rule that when the system sees a new drive, it formats it, mounts it, and starts filling the filesystem with random data until full. SSD, USB, or HDD; doesn't matter.

You cannot guarantee that all chips are wiped on an SSD/USB drive, but that doesn't mean you're completely out of options.
The best way to overwrite data is to mount the SSD/USB drive, remove all files and directories, then fill the free space with random data.
EG: dd if=/dev/urandom of=random.bin
Even if the SSD/USB has wear-leveling and/or the filesystem is copy-on-write, this ensures that the overwhelming majority of chip registers are overwritten.
If you're paranoid, do it a few times.

This is the "woozy face" emoji. It's taking a random walk in a 3 by 3 grid, dropping coins as it passes each space.
The coins change in weight and color as they're repeated passed over. The grid resets when every space is filled with "@".

When I worked as a contractor for a U.S. government department back in 2010/2011, the team I was on had all HP-UX on PA-RISC, with a few on Itanium.
We had speculated whether or not HP was pulling development on HP-UX given that 11i v3 was released in 2007 and there didn't seem to by any movement towards 11i v4 or 12.0.
This in addition to Tru64 on Alpha that HP ended earlier.

Cyclists have been years ahead of runners in this regard. It's unfortunate running power hasn't taken off with runners.
I know why (I train exclusively by power), but it really is an untapped potential that can improve running in so many ways (at the risk of coming across as a fanboy).
So in my experience, NSM coupled with running power means true sweet spot training that cyclists have been taking advantage of for two decades.

Of course NSM won't work for everyone. It's definitely not a beginner framework and it requires at least 5-6 hours of weekly consistency out of you already.
But if they've plateaued and are frustrated with not making significant progress, it's very likely they are aerobically underdeveloped and mechanically overcooked.
A lot of high volume, low intensity aerobic base building is probably what they need to break free, which is exactly what NSM offerts.

NSM completely changed the way I look at training. I was already mostly there with what I was doing already, but the "a hah!" moment came when I recognized it as "sweet spot" training and that V̇O₂ max sessions were the sessions that were holding me back. As soon as I replaced those with more sub-threshold, the improvements starting showing up almost immediately.

Just watched a YouTube video from an influencer with 20K subscribers.
It was 16 minutes with a whiteboard criticizing why the Norwegian Singles Method doesn't work. It was obvious they didn't have even the simplest grasp of what the framework is or how to apply it.
Even more obvious was NSM possibly damaging their revenue stream. They couldn't help but talk in passing about their own training plans and why they're superior. Which of course are "linked in the description below".

It's kind of hilarious to watch running influencers try to talk their way out of the "Norwegian Singles Method".
It turns out, a simple, sustainable, low-risk, low-fatigue, highly effective training framework doesn't need influencers or coaches trying to sell you their latest training plan or book.
And that's a problem.

Despite a clearly posted "No Soliciting" sign on my front door, solicitors still try coming by to sell things.
I introduce myself, get their name and business, shake their hand, listen to their sales pitch, and answer any questions they have. I'm police, nice, and never interrupt.
Then when it finally gets to whether or not I'm interested and I tell them "No", they get upset that I wasted their time. I guess they can't read.
When they depart, I leave a 1-star review on Google, Yelp, and BBB.
