We've also worked out how to do offline payment calculations which we synch with the users wallet when they go online.
Chapters and Transcripts are just features and I am sure they will be added shortly. Web Apps don't work in CarPlay and installing a PWA is too confusing for users.

Next week we launch our new TrueFans wallet available globally which uses lightning payments. The week after we will launch our new ActivityPub server which will allow TrueFans users to share their Podcast Activity across the Fediverse (social media).

In the last two weeks TrueFans has launched events, ticketing, blogs and a new audio player plus numerous UI tweaks to various pages. Previously we launched Podrolls and Publisher Feeds.
3. SuperFeeds
However the biggest feature we launched earlier this week was SuperFeeds. The ability for a podcaster to add any new Podcasting 2.0 tag to their existing RSS feed and then publish the new TrueFans RSS feed to the Podcast Index while staying with their existing host.

I am so confused. Retoot is now dead so it's all Boost in ActivityPub and Podcasting. I thought a Boostagram was a comment with SAT payment??? And that a Comment wad just that without a SAT payment. Then in ActivityPub they have a Quote which is a reply but is a reply just a comment because ActivityPub has no micropayment element.
In NOSTR its a Zap which is the same as a Boost?

As TrueFans aligns more with the Fediverse I wonder if we rename Boostagrams to Quotes. We already have Boosts. Or do we need Boosts, Quotes and Boostagrams. So a Quote is a comment without SATs payment. I am not a fan of NOSTR so I wont be using terms like Zaps.

agree lets hope that happens and if not TrueFans then Fountain, Podverse, PodcastGuru etc. What I am trying to grapple with is how do we change the podcasters mentality. That can only happen if users first understand V4V and which wallet to use and why SATs and not fiat etc. Oh well happy Friday!

my hope is that V4V can go from a trickle to a tsunami and all the water references in between. V4V is more a mindset change for people. Instead of giving a heart I can give a SAT. But making more people understand a SAT is the challenge and that is the job of all of us and the job of apps to make it super simple to do. But if the economic model of podcasting being the last free digital content holdout changed then it would make my job easier.

I keep mentioning Apple because they have 45% market share. Even if it's a passion project, are you not interested in more people getting wallets and using SATs to reward podcasters and musicians? Apple is the reason I think normies see no point in paying SATs for podcasting when they get it for free. And yes nothing to stop anyone starting another App offering free podcasts but I doubt they are owned by a $3Trillion company with a monopoly of a platform and store.

Taking a risk to start a business that eventually brings a return is what every entrepreneur risks with no guarantees but it's not a passion project for me while I do another job to pay the bills. I too have volunteered to get a wallet and pay millions of sats. I too have spent 2+ years promoting and building podcasting 2.0
I am simply trying to get a conversation going and asking this group about how can we (collectively) can get more people to use wallets, understand sats and thus make it more rewarding for podcasters and artists. Yes I need TrueFans to generate a revenue. 2 years+ of no income following the dream of Podcasting 2.0 is not sustainable.

fair enough that is your opinion. So in your opinion what will it take for V4V, Wallets and Micropayments to gain mass adoption. Bolt 12 is still another year away from adoption and NOSTR is not the answer. I was in Netscape when the browser and thus web adoption was crawling before it took off thanks to Microsoft bundling the browser into the OS. What do you think will be the trigger for wider adoption?

podcasting users numbers are growing but as James Cridland reported the number of active podcasts are reducing. Podfade in the long tail is growing. Those at the top are getting the advertising and sponsorship deals. All I am asking is would V4V get wider adoption if 100% free was not available. It's a discussion I wanted to pose and get people's thoughts.

V4V is a voluntary payment but this is not a sustainable model for podcasters or music artists. Busking or begging for money is not a sustainable model. We need to have three models - free interrupted with adverts, ad free model with subscriptions and a third way where you pay only for what you listen too.
I am a massive advocate of V4V but lets be honest its not getting mass adoption because the mainstream sees no value in it. Why pay for the same free podcast on Apple?

3/3 - Selfishly Podcasting 2.0 apps like TrueFans need all podcasts to become a paid for 1st class digital product. We are seeing this trend slowly happening with Wondery+, The Economist, FT and now the NY times. And yet Apple Subscriptions has been a failure?
In order for Podcasting 2.0 apps to see pay-as-you-listen micropayments get wider adoption, we will need all podcasts behind paid wall. Why would anyone pay for a podcast (even micropayments) if they get it free on Apple? Am I wrong?

2/3 - If I want to listen to podcasts on Spotify I either pay a subscription or I pay with my time by listening to adverts. But Apple Podcasts are free to listen too and have no adverts while Apple Music and Apple TV are not free?
Why won't Apple put all podcasts behind their music or TV subscriptions. Apple has announced its first dual-language podcast will be part of the Apple TV+ connected subscription, offering Apple TV+ subscribers access to all episodes on release in Apple Podcasts???

1/3 - On this weeks Podnews Weekly Review I had another rant about Apple podcasts. Unfortunately it didn't make the editors cut. So here why I think Apple Podcasts is the reason podcasting is a second class digital product.
We are all prepared to pay for music, films, audiobooks etc. and in the UK we also have to buy a TV/Radio license but for some reason people don't expect to pay for podcasts and I think the reason is 100% Apple's fault. #podcasting

the way I read this is people are trading significant digital assets as NFTs. These digital assets are not being reported on and now they need to be. It was probably a nice tax loop hole to transfer asset wealth tax free.
I really don't see how this could affect $20 microtransactions via SATs for podcasting. However the good thing is we track payments in and out for every user so it's easy for TrueFans to send annual summary of payments to all users and podcasters.

On TrueFans you top up your wallet with $10 we then put that in your TrueFans wallet. Then when the payments are internal between TrueFan wallets we manage that for you. All external payments are over lightning. If you are a podcaster and accumulate $20's worth of SATs we will let you make a withdrawal via Stripe.

I'll take Dave Winer seriously when he admits he never invented RSS. It was done by two friends of mine in Netscape for my old boss Mike Homer. Dave hijacked it and just called his version RSS 2.0 - talk about taking credit for something.

So the good news is our Alby Hub is working with a new public channel in TrueFans. We are going to open more channels for more capacity.
We are now rebuilding our onboarding to create new managed TrueFans wallets. This will speed up and simplify our whole process. I think what Russell is describing is that each host becomes a payment node and that Truefans sends a payment to the PodToo node from our Alby node and then PodToo makes the required payment to their hosted podcasters. If honest I don't like this model as we have removed the P2P direct nature of the payments from the listener's wallet to the podcaster's wallet. This will also make Value Time Payments extremely complex.

Step1: We are already working with Alby and have setup our Alby Hub. We are opening 3 channels (one public). Our current Alby API configuration will work once we change the node addr. We already have virtual accounts in TrueFans. So similar to the model Russell describes. We will onboard new users with a virtual account (this is much better for us) and we will track their transactions and then make lightning payments to podcasters from our node.

At the moment all hosts claim to support the medium tag. However I would like a way to differentiate hosts who support more than medium=podcast. For example RSSBlue supports medium=music and Podhome supports medium=courses. I wonder how we can so this distinction in the podcastindex host/app page.

I agree asking hosts to add even more medium tags may be overly hopeful. Currently we look for VTS items in the feed and then add the musicast category. Thats the best/only option.

Should podcasts like Mixtapes from Wavlake and Musicasts like Boostagram Ball be tagged medium=music instead of medium=podcast -or do we need another attribute medium=musicast. It would greatly help apps like TrueFans. https://truefans.fm/music

Podcasting 2.0 was meant to mirror Web 2.0 (which was 1st coined in 1999 by Darcy DiNucci over 25 yrs ago) It was later popularized by O'Reilly Media during the Web 2.0 Conference in 2004.
I think podcasting missed a marketing trick. It should have been called Podcasting 3 to mirror Web 3. Web 3 characteristics are data portability, decentralisation, ownership and monetisation.
I believe RSS has all of these traits today. Often people confuse RSS 2.0 and Podcasting 2.0 - should it change?

According to FediDB, the ActivityPub side of the Fediverse is now used by nearly 10 million people, across more than 27,000 servers. FediDB also tracks 48 different platforms leveraging ActivityPub in some way. With Threads actively doing work their own implementation, these stats are likely to skyrocket, in more ways than one.
