I, for one, welcome our single-client overlord.
A SuperApp client looks like Nostrudel plus relay.tools
Do not fear innovation, even if it looks different than what you had in mind.
If we all use the same client, then relays become the focal point of decentralization. This is a good thing.
Clients are irrelevant in the face of a so-called SuperApp, and that's okay.
Kind-events are the protocol.
Relays are the protocol.
Users are the protocol.
Clients are just a limited gateway to using the protocol.
If we desire to be limitless then there would only need to be one client.
Nostr is a decentralized SuperApplication upon a decentralized protocol.
Nostr-CLI would never demand a competitor if it is built correctly.
Neither should Nostr-GUI.
I only worry that it may be realized long after relays have been forgotten.

Right, all of which is indirectly competing. OpenSats has an organic advantage over these options by way of organized distribution.
I think that advantage is something to be celebrated. We rely on many centralized aspects to keep the Nostr thriving.
I am not sure what level of transparency should be demanded of OpenSats. I would perhaps argue claims of transparency, being that is an alleged goal of their own, but I am not here to speak negatively of them, or be too critical.
What I would like to see from OS specifically, is more attention given to rejected applications. I have seen people approved and denied in my time here, and I think there could be more follow-up with projects that weren't accepted.
Where is the spotlight for those who didn't quite make it, yet? How can OpenSats encourage them to keep trying? I think the lack of options keeps people from applying more than anything. The alternative options are a lot more work than applying to OS, but they have varying success rates with direct fulfillment, whereas OpenSats just says "sorry, you weren't selected." I think that can be demoralizing for many, and it should be addressed.

+1 for consideration toward a new grant process.
I agree with many of the major points laid out here, as far as criticism of the current process goes.
As far as the changes go, I have thought about this myself but not in nearly as much depth. I have wondered who will champion this cause, and what their motivations might be. I think there is lots of room for both.
The OpenSats committee is a centralized committee. To attempt to decentralize their finance from an external position would seem to be an impediment.
I would hope to see someone apply for a grant for this very purpose. I would expect a decentralized committee to take on this role and work (somewhat) closely with OpenSats to identify the most impactful plan of attack.
If the new system proves to be secure and functional, I don't see why OpenSats would hesitate to deploy additional capital toward that particular initiative.
But until it's proven, I would assume they want to protect their capital.
Any new innovation in the grant space will lead to more funding. As long as OpenSats remains the only grant committee, the underlying issue is that they have no competition. Competition in this space is very healthy. Donors want options.

Skeptical, yes, but I think there is plenty of potential value proposition for many implementations of WoT. However, I would argue that it is still being integrated poorly. This is no fault of WoT devs.
@npub149p…722q is who I would call upon for a good counter-argument in general.
I will argue both in favor as well as against WoT because I see things differently, but let it be stated that I am not much of a developer, so my perspective may be skewed.
(Warning, this post is kinda long)
I had never heard of Web of Trust until I found @npub1u5n…ldq3 on GitHub, and I followed his ideas as best as I could. I basically harassed him to educate me to the best of his abilities about Web of Trust for about one year. At many times his arguments seem very promising but perhaps seemingly short-sighted, though again, I wouldn't place this "burden of proper WoT implementation" on an "amateur WoT dev".
I make these distinctions because I believe in the freedom tech movement as much as the next purple-feathered dingo, and I recognize that @npub1u5n…ldq3 wasn't much of a developer either until Nostr encouraged him to keep pursuing his idea of WoT. Watching his progress has been even more satisfying than watching my own.
In any case, how this relates to your question- I've been getting to know @npub10np…tl5h and his relay.tools project, and it has me considering what I've thought about Nostr since I got here (~2 years).
Relays are flexible as proven by many applications.
They can be decidedly ephemeral or attempt to maintain permanence.
What impresses me most is the versatility of Blastr. In my mind there will be various structures to the Nostr network which will continue to take full advantage of Blastr indefinitely. When Nostr says censorship resistance, I say BLASTR is the WAY.
But not everything needs to be Blasted.
So, relay.tools is implementing NIP-42(?) auth which should take care of that and provide ephemeral identities.
At this point in my mind, any instance of relay.tools now has the same "problem" of Nostr.
"What client is going to integrate with this?"
Or, "What does a client with on-demand relays look like?"
And, yeah, that's a tough question, cloud.
I am fully confident in the direction things are heading.
But again, the question. What is WoT for?
I think it's for relays.
I think with relay.tools we will be able to maintain decentralized distribution of relays that SCALE.
And I think it's important that it be done this way.
We will be able to create communities of relays based on endorsements from the administrators and users.
We will be able to replicate entire collections of relays from one domain to the next.
Nostr is a flood and WoT is the wind.
It's the direction we choose. The people we trust. It's a trust metric.
But I don't trust npubs.
I trust heavily endorsed networks of relays, especially when that trust score is heavily procured by my own follow list.
By enabling what I call "operational relays" to exist separately with relaytools, we can manage authority structures locally at the domain level, as well as allow users to migrate from one domain to the next, irregardless of client.
I believe relay.tools is the future API of scalable Nostr relays and Web of Trust will be our way of sorting signal from noise, down to the personal level, inclusive of client and server levels, and always maintaining total decentralization at the client level, thanks to #Nostr.
This is what I see as someone who merely considers themselves a user at this time.
When Listr.lol becomes Logseq.lol we will have a better tool for managing complex, personal lists of user data.
This kind of application is in development. I found someone on here who is building a client for that too. When I suggested collaborative editing, they seemed on board with that too.
The future is fucking BRIGHT king.
WoT is not the answer, it is merely our way of filtering signal from noise. But it starts at the relay level.

I agree with it, but, I think what I've learned over the years that "maybe Bitcoin is not for everyone" and also "maybe trading is not for everyone."
That isn't to say it couldn't be a majority effort, to secure the bag. But to me it means reaching people on another level. People have been introduced to Bitcoin. Not everyone but the majority of internet users.
What I see is that people are more eager to learn if you can approach Bitcoin from their own perspective.
It may sound weird, but I lure people in to Bitcoin by talking about everything else. When you say "...except Bitcoin" or "that's why I choose Bitcoin.." in relation to things people do understand, I think it allows them to open the door for themselves and figure out what Bitcoin means to them.

You can do this with Listr + Amethyst albeit it is not quite user-friendly. You just have to create NIP-51 lists of people that you want assigned to a particular feed. Amethyst will let you select from those lists.
Not sure if lists can be created with Amethyst yet or not but I think in time we will see it more.

How would this work in a chat environment? My perspective is that I could view all of the emojis I have reacted with toward any other user's posts. It's tough to say how to adjust the other emojis. I would want to create my own graph and adjust it over time. Perhaps the other emojis could be addressable by the user as desired?
The way I select an emoji now on Amethyst for instance, I am given some defaults and can add my own emoji. So I would expect a graph to work the same way.
"Here is all of your emoji reactions you have submitted on Vitor's notes/events that fit within the predetermined 74 emojis provided by Amethyst"
Then I click the filter and select an external emoji; it looks for it, and allows me to plot it in accordance with the valence-arousal axes.
It would be even more interesting if this were public data. For instance if I were to sign in with your npub, it would be amazing to see how you sort your emojis into your own emotional narrative, and how that reflects across your public events. I assume this is possible.
This is how I believe "Web of Trust" will be represented on Nostr, personally. I prefer to think of it as Web of Emotion or Web of Reactions. I think it is freely obtainable data that gives us a more complete emotional narrative. It might help one form a loose narrative of trust (between decentralized and often anonymous users).
The third dimension is like a heat map. If I react to Vitor with 100 👻 emojis, it must be heavily represented on the chart. I am not familiar enough with tridimensional dataset visualization to imagine it further. Would love to play with NIP-25 datasets soon.

On a similar note, how does one measure the LTV, or the value-to-growth ratio of other protocols?
Seems like applications would have better conceptual approaches to measuring and defining success.
Looking at the protocol level for metrics of success is a lot harder when the protocol doesn't aim to be entirely public.
All metrics are gameable.
With Bitcoin we have never had much of a perfect picture of value either. Value is perspective-based. Individually determined.
