Last Notes npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi I keep thinking about voting. More accurately I keep thinking about throwing your lot behind mainstream political parties. I make the clarification because your vote is statistically meaningless. Nothing much follows from that about whether you should go to the polling station. It does, however, show that the debate around voting is really about whether we should be supporting mainstream political parties. What we are really doing is arguing about whether we should join a movement to support the election of some party or other. There are two reasons to advocate for joining that movement. The boring one is that you are aligned with their goals. The hard case is when you see their goals as abhorrent, dangerous or just not in your interests but that some alternative is worse. The Emma Goldman approach (voting changes nothing) is not some bizarre objection to majoritarian decision making. It is opposition to a popular front against the worse alternative (fascism). She is counselling against the oppressed (the working class) going into coalition with the liberal party of the oppressors (capital). She is insisting that the oppressed have an independent politics that can only be realised through the autonomous organisation of the oppressed. To go into coalition with the liberals is to be subsumed by them. You will serve their ends, but they will scab on you. Goldman has been right so far. The history of any successful anti-colonial nationalist movement or the crushing, with the collusion of the USSR, of the communist partisans after the second world war, or the Populist Party of her own day will serve as examples. Goldman, however, was part of a genuinely international revolutionary movement of the oppressed. There is no such movement today. Where she could reasonably hope for the overthrow of capitalism in the US and worldwide, we cannot. What I think that we need to take from that is the need to build an autonomous movement of the oppressed. That movement might well counsel voting for the liberal oppressors as better than the alternative. It should never campaign under their banner or enter into alliance with them. If that is right, the rush to the Green party in this country is a mistake. Although having said that, politics is in flux and it is not impossible to imagine wresting control of what was a small party from the liberals. #Pol, #Voting, #Elections, #Strategy npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…n90j thank you. It is the joy of the internet npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…wxs3 has a new recipe blog: https://paper.wf/anghamelkhalili/. She is displaced in Gaza. As I understand the project, she wants to share her recipes in return for donations. I love it. It feels like an act of resistance. I have been wondering why Mastodon responded so enthusiastically to Mastodon for Harris, raising over half a million if I recall, but has failed to respond in the same way to the actual individuals here on mastodon who desperately need support. I'm sure most of the support for Harris was because she wasn't Trump. People didn't think, go girl, bomb Gaza harder. Quite the opposite, I'm sure. But right here through Mastodon you can make some reparative gesture and show some basic solidarity, yet you don't. Angham's blog gives me a glimpse of an answer. We don't want to see the people in Gaza as humans. The raw humanity, whether in the bleeding wounds or the possibility of conversation is just too much. You engage with that and suddenly it is not your world anymore. It is full of other people. You can't say, 'well I hate Israel, but its only Eurovision' or 'but Man City play such astonishing football' or even 'yes, she's an enthusiastic genocidaire, but Trump's worse'. This is not to say that you must boycott Eurovision or not vote, it is simply that you can't treat the world as only containing affluent Europeans and Americans. It changes everything. It is easier to say, 'the need is too great. I can't do anything'. That is why the blog is an act of resistance. It insists on a world in which Angham is human. #GazaVerified, #Gaza, #Palestine, #Recipes, #KamalaHarris npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…46jr it is obviously very broadly drawn. Perhaps so as to be abstract. I do think that it captures something important npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi Here is my UK election hot take: The people who vote Reform are small business owners and home owners in post-industrial parts of the country. That is owners of property with competitively low rental value. They are being shafted by the UK being an offshore money laundering centre and service centre for US capital. The people who vote Green are the precariate, small time traders, and members of the repressed priestly caste (academics, researchers, charity workers, doctors, social workers). They are renting or heavily in debt to own property with a high rental value. They are being shafted by the UK being an offshore money laundering centre and service centre for US capital. The Reform voters are pinning after an imagined empire. The vision sold is of Britain being top dog, exploiting all those foreigners for their wages and resources. The Green voters are pinning after another imagined empire, although theirs has more potential, that of the EU. That pan-European empire also exploits non-Europeans for their resources and labour. It is less explicit about it, wrapped up as it is in talk of rights and the rule of law. Neither party will deal with the fundamental problem which is that empire has never benefited the masses. Empire has always been a tool of capitalism. Capitalism is not just a mode of economic organisation. It is a political project. It maintains that power should flow from the ownership of capital. Empire benefits a tiny ruling class. The small time owner has no stake in that power. Big capital destroyed the political power of the state from the late 70s onwards to prevent the transfer of power to the masses so that they could maintain their dominance. Austerity is just structural adjustment brought home. Any project for change needs to be internationalist and democratic. The Greens, as the political wing of the anti genocide movement, might yet get there, but I doubt it. #ReformUK, #GreenParty, #UKPol, #LocalElections npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…wxs3 coffee (+/- Fairouz) in the morning is not too much to ask of this world. That includes Germany which lost. This is because of white solidarity and the legacy of empire. I can't believe I have never noticed that before npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi Just as a follow up there are two possible responses: 1. It also seemed to be saying, get involved in the Labour party but get Long-Bailey elected and get involved in the Green party. That seems wrong for the reasons articulated. These parties are bourgeois parties. I'm happy with the idea that we use our limited power to win concessions by backing Corbyn or Polanski, but that has to be from outside of the party. We have to articulate our rejection of their world even as we support taxing wealth npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…6s65 I think that this is not quite right. You are right that voting 'left' will inevitably lead to disappointment and disillusionment. The reason given is correct. These parties are not revolutionary. They are committed to the status quo. That is to say, they are bourgeois political parties. It also seems right that revolutionary politics is built through long term political engagement. It then seems that conclusion has to be that the struggle has to be outside of the mainstream, parliamentary parties. Sure, vote Green if you want, but the working class must build its own political organisations that articulate its own interest and perspective. That must be the long-term project, not struggling to get a reformist elected who will inevitably sell us out and return the ground to the worst aspects of the bourgeoisie npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…pt63 you alright or just busy? What it actually means is that you are not sufficiently imperialist and for the big owners of capital. I think that in the end the reasons these attacks work is that many small owners of capital, which are those who vote, are scared to gamble. The system sort of works for them. Radical change could well go wrong. I think that you have to force your opponents to produce the justification for their claims. That justification being that big capital is tied up with US capital and their imperial interests npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…x9tq If I was the Green party, when Labour try to scare people by claiming that they are not serious on defense, I would be trumpeting loudly my unique commitment to energy security. His complete disregard for the meaning of what he says is one. Here is a snippet from his forward to 'Restoring Control' the immigration white paper: 'It is a wound, as I said on my first day as Prime Minister, that can only be healed by action not words. This White Paper is just that.' My friend, it is 80 pages of policy proposal. It is literally words. #KeirStarmer, #Knobhead, #UKPol npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…h0rd as a counterpoint, here is Frank Ramsey: Where I seem to differ from some of my friends is in attaching little importance to physical size. I don't feel the least humble before the vastness of the heavens. The stars may be large, but they cannot think or love; and these are qualities which impress me far more than size does. I take no credit for weighing nearly seventeen stone. My picture of the world is drawn in perspective, and not like a model to scale. The foreground is occupied by human beings and the stars are all as small as threepenny bits. I don't really believe in astronomy, except as a complicated description of part of the course of human and possibly animal sensation. I apply my perspective not merely to space but also to time. In time the world will cool and everything will die; but that is a long time off still, and its present value at compound discount is almost nothing. Nor is the present less valuable because the future will be blank. Humanity, which fills the foreground of my picture, I find interesting and on the whole admirable. I find, just now at least, the world a pleasant and exciting place. You may find it depressing; I am sorry for you, and you despise me. But I have reason and you have none; you would only have a reason for despising me if your feeling corresponded to the fact in a way mine didn't. But neither can correspond to the fact. The fact is not in itself good or bad; it is just that it thrills me but depresses you. On the other hand, I pity you with reason, because it is pleasanter to be thrilled than to be depressed, and not merely pleasanter but better for all one's activities. I guess I think that the US with its trillion dollar armed forces can pursue its imperial agenda. Not that it should, but it can. The Europeans are just paying a tribute to the US. At current expenditure levels they can't even provide auxiliary services to the empire. All this talk of increasing budgets to build an independent defense policy is really just a smokescreen for being in a position to actually serve the US. In this case send boats to the med, but what Washington really wants is to hand over the war with Russia. Its clear that they can't do anything at the current level. It is clear that they are ok. They would be better if they stopped being imperialists. The money saved could be used to build alliances and projects that made everybody richer. Of course collectively it isn't. But that means you need to be taking collective action. The very low level, low effort collective action is saying, 'vote x' or putting up a poster or defending a party's programme online or things of that ilk. Whether you actually go down to the polling station is irrelevant. We do have to get over the idea that collective action is the sum of individual actions. I go vegan, you go vegan, eventually we all go vegan. That is not how it works. Often a very small number of people build a campaign and sometimes they bring about systemic change. You might support that campaign by sharing your favourite dhal recipe, but you becoming or being vegan is irrelevant. That change will involve lots of individual changes. Of course the campaign is not effective unless some people actually become vegan. That person may as well be you, but it doesn't have to be. I would point out that, unlike with voting, there is no obvious connection between the number of vegans in the population and the level of animal suffering. It may be that by reducing demand for meat, the price of it goes down and so the level of animal welfare decreases to reduce cost. That is not an argument against being vegan. I think that you don't go vegan because it will reduce suffering, but because you cannot countenance eating animal products. In that sense it is disanalogous to voting npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…cmq0 for me the problem is that your vote is so statistically meaningless as to be pointless. It is through the limited levers of party decision making and campaigning for a programme that you make a difference via the ballot. You should think that electoral politics matters. If you are renting a place, your rent becomes a charge against the property. On sale the landlord has to give you the rent money you paid. There would be an exception for work done maintaining or improving the place. This would be the (agreed) cost of the work with a multiplier to take account of the landlords time. The effect would be that the landlord would be paid for the work of providing the home and benefit from any capital gain to compensate for the landlord's risk. The risk being that the work done on the house is greater than the rent paid. Why a proposal for international women's day? Because women are more likely to be doing care labour. They are less likely to be able to afford to buy a house and so are most effected by the awful scam that is rent. #Rent, #InternationalWomensDay, #HousingCrisis npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi @nprofile…thcn this is so good. I would recommend. The plot deals with some of the disputes in the early church about the exact metaphysical relationship between Christ and the Father. Was Jesus also God or was he a human in whom God manifested. All fun metaphysical stuff. You get to worry about the difference between Ousia (being) and hypostasis (more like Locke's substance, as the unknowable bearer of properties). What I wanted to know though was: Do modern Protestant churches worry about the metaphysics of the Trinity? On the one hand, what difference does it make? It is always a mystery. That is OK. On the other, it is pretty fundamental to Christianity. Do I properly worship Jesus or just the God made manifest through him? If not, who is sacrificed on the cross and by whom? #Christianity, #ReligiousQuestions, #Metaphysics, #Azazeel, #YusufZieden npub1mggz9purlf3lzvcynfke9ktrhqeexztx7v2hfc3xrreuymnkv09q7mj7ru Roberto von Archimboldi So I just finished reading Azazeel by Yusuf Zieden. I think that this is why: 1. It centres US domestic politics 2. It ignores the fact that a huge part of the US establishment has been gunning for war in Iran for years. It is not a Trumpist development. In short it pretends that the US is not a belligerent, imperialist project. What has happened is that the US has decided to drop the talking softly part and is quite prepared to use the full force of its military might to secure domination. It is important to remember that both the left and the right of the Labour party hated Corbyn because he was anti-imperialist. I have to say that I don't think that the Greens are authentically anti-imperialist but perhaps they are. The troubling part of the response is the idea that any Muslim who is motivated to reject the Labour party because of their foreign policy is an Islamist. This is to say nothing of the fact that working class people of any religion might be tempted to vote for a party promising to end austerity and redistribute wealth, quite apart from their views on Gaza. This is a very disturbing racism. They are saying that by rejecting the core tenet of the British establishment, Muslims are anti-democratic, extremists who don't belong in Britain. This is a dynamic that needs resisting. We need to make the bastards defend their imperialism and not allow it to be the threshold of being considered moderate, democratic and mainstream. To anybody under 50 in England at least, decriminalisation of drugs is common sense. In the mid to late nineties there was a big push back on the war on drugs. As the government are going to pay for the licence, can I run windows in a virtual machine inside, say, Debian? Would that stop windows spying on everything else I do?
