Threads on the other hand might be reporting true numbers due to being a public company but I wouldn't trust them context-wise. We know for instance that they pulled in a lot of Instagram users which accounted for the initial seed of 2.5M users. If my memory serves me well. So the quantity might not translate into quality.
The whole pressure to have as many users as possible is dumb. You need a solid userbase. Not a large userbase. Unless your goal is to sell as many ads as possible. But we've been there before and we ended with a dumpster fire.

First time I hear about that. Usually the repos are published as is and whoever decides to use it sort of handwaves any future complaints. If they decide to use it then that's their choice and their responsibility. The code is opensource so they can check what they're using. That no one does it is their problem. I haven't heard of anyone having legal problems in open source.
