What makes something a "Nostr app" or a "Nostr site"? Some are more obvious than others. Looked at the Github code on many of the big ones I often see stated as such and for some of them, much of their operations use outside resources for storage, databases, etc. Only login or identifying an account npub are Nostr related. #asknostr

Checking in on Nostr again. See the same influencer bias and favoritism still on this platform. News and trending sources cover the same accounts over and over again so much it's not even funny. The usual social media cliches happening here as Twitter or whatever my X wants to be called nowadays. Low followed account makes a brilliant post, barely any attention. Popular social media circle jerked account makes the same point two months later and they are hailed as a visionary for it. Nostr developers, ever wonder why some get more attention than others even if they aren't really doing more? And don't get me started on why some "cheerleaders" get so much attention. Careful everyone, you are being manipulated on an "algo free" service.

I will never understand why people give money so easily to "influencers" and I see it happening on here now too. Influencer starts a fundraiser to pay for their latest podcast, idea, or event. Many of them look wealthy and are constantly travelling the world yet they need your money. One of the oldest tricks in the business book: Never pay for something yourself when you can get others to fund it for you. Stop fueling someone else's success and start building your own. Quite the in crowd club already forming on nostr and circle jerking each other.

Since BTC has grown every cycle, the number of “influencers” have grown and as well as changed up with new crop of fresh young faces with better camera equipment and filters. Each of them more interested in getting followers and fame than truly advancing the reach of the technology. Be extremely weary of what they say. See through their “one of us” speeches. Every industry is the same. Someone somewhere wants to be famous from it and make a buck. These people are the shovel makers of the Gold Rush. Looking at these conventions and who is speaking is such a dead giveaway. Bitcoin influencers are D List celebrities hoping to get famous. Ask yourself, what exactly are they doing to advance the network? What are they building? Other than their Fiat accounts.

A bunch of Bitcoin celebrities that have not actually done anything other than be a mouth or media personality are sucking simp followers in and the so called open Nostr ecosystem is spoon feeding this to all newbs. And you all are falling for it. Every new app and search bar offers the same recommended follow list!?!!? Very sad. Bring on the real interesting people not getting attention. Thatis what will keep new people wanting to stay here not circle jerking the same “celebs”. Nostr.band is about as close to decent as I can see.

Thanks! I vividly remember IRC and ICQ like they were yesterday. Newsgroups were such an interesting way to pirate stuff as well. There does seem to be human patterns that always creep up slowly in any new platform. I always have a bit of a "hope" that this time around will be different, but sadly we are just animals by nature. I've always felt I am a bit of a "watcher" by nature. I cannot stop any of this from happening. Just stand on the side and watch the same train wreck happen again. At least with Nostr we can all get tips for voicing our opinions and not get banned for it.

For those NOT attending #Nostrica, this is how cliques and VIP groups start to form on budding technologies. I have seen it time and again across several platforms. Those who can afford to attend or are connected versus those who have to work the lowly fiat mines just to barely cover rent. Watch as these groups create exclusivity and you are left behind. It is a sad sad reality that always happens. I love the idea of Nostr but can already see it happening. Maybe there will even soon be a relay for Nostrica only attenders? Tried asking some devs but being ignored. How do I load this nostr-tools repo locally and get it to work? Readme leaves out a bunch of steps apparently. Here's a chunk of code. *Magic*. It works. No it doesn't. I ran the npm install nostr-tools command. Copy pasted the "Generating a private key and a public key" section into a html file inside a header script tag. It's sad that the price of everything is going up, yet the quality of the items is getting worse. Bought the same pair of shoes as I did 10 years ago, for $10 more than before. The material feels thinner, more flimsy, and cheaper. These won't last that long. None of us can stop this by ourselves, but at least stacking sats can help us hedge inflation and the corporate games.

Zaps are such a great way to compliment someone on solid posts. The best part is that they are decentralized unlike places like Youtube that only allows who they say to be earn money. It's usually elitists and ones lucky enough to already have a following somehow, like celebrities.

My main concern with the relay model is that it is a gateway to creating exclusive areas on Nostr that only wealthier individuals or well-connected vips may get access to. Let's say someone creates a paid relay that requires a large sat payment to join. What then? It possibly becomes elitist.

Nostr will be like other technologies that get stuck for years with only more technical people if its leaders don't pounce on things that would trip up the less technical users. Something as simple as stating which key is needed in Damus is an example. Users are being taught to protect their BTC private keys at all cost, so of course they'd not risk typing their Nostr private key into an app unless it states exactly to use it. That's all I'm saying.

Why is that highly technical people are often so bad at explaining things to other people? It's been my experience for like 30 years. The sharpest people I've ever met are usually terrible at giving directions. Tech docs will skip big chunks of steps, etc.
