like hangyu's loosely based on a noose but it's just as conceivably "orb with strangle murderer arms." the tiny orb-head with huge arms makes it hard to headshot and gives it decent damage output, so i can forgive it! that's actually a viable adaptation. like yeah it looks sort of like a noose but it's more a weird creature and if something can float without using limbs it makes sense to not have those limbs. the floating isn't an afterthought it's the core mechanic for the pal and literally why you want one
related note: the sweetspot/sourspot mechanics in palworld are one of my favorite little touches for their monster designs. digtoise is durable and has high defense and naturally gains defense traits, but they really leaned into "this thing is a fucking tank" with the sourspot: hitting the shell that is like 90% of its available surface area deals reduced damage. thing's crazy survivable literally because it is protected by a shell. that's fucking great, that's pure soul, that's a genuine love for your product

palworld runs out of content at level 30
mt obsidian is pretty well-developed and there's cool routes leading slowly up and around the mountain, but feels empty aside from hazards most of which you can just fly over
the desert and tundra are blatantly unfinished messes covered in broken geometry and wrong textures, with the tundra biome featuring one (1) new pal and a bunch of lazy recolors. the only interesting part of the desert is duneshelter and the only interesting part of the tundra is that one ancient ruin
plus, by level 30 you should have basically all the pals you could ever reasonably need and don't have any reason to catch more. originally, you were catching pals because it was the only way to make your base functional. you needed a vulpix to run your furnace. after a bit, you were catching pals to make your base run faster, like upgrading to penking from pengullet because it waters 3x as fast
by level 25, you should have the pals best at any task easily and there's not much point in catching pals. jormuntides are slight upgrades for kindling and watering, but it's trivial to breed anubis (best at handiwork), trivial to breed lyleens (best for plantations, petalia + mossanda, both things you should have caught by now) and trivial to catch azurobes (second best at watering). if you're willing to settle for second-best at handiwork instead of engaging in breeding autism the lava river south of the desert is crawling with level 20 wixens that are trivial to catch
game promises 50 levels of content but it's really only 30 levels of content then 20 levels of grinding for the last 2 bossfights.
i'd still recommend palworld if you like pokemon or ark or survival crafters, but man, they REALLY need to flesh out the last half of the game because it's so painfully empty and unfinished
...i say last half, but the data says it's closer to last 70%. there's data in the game that suggests a final level cap of 100.
tl;dr: early access game isn't finished

@npub1pg0…7rcu the problem with palworld combat is that the ai is retarded. i bred a combat jormungandr and like 40% of the time it gets its stupid ass lodged in the geometry and stops doing anything. another 20% of the time it's using its fatass hitbox to knock bosses out of the geometry and forcing me to backtrack back out of the dungeon from the last room
the concept of the human not being particularly important and mostly popping out status effects is the idea in hardmode but it just doesn't work for so many different reasons
hell, beegardes are the most absurdly scary thing on hardmode because implode does enough damage to instantly kill you through your shield, they're faster than you, and the explosion hitbox lingers longer than your iframes. if you aren't on a flier by the time they start the attack you just die
i'm sure they'll figure something out eventually but right now i'm thinking 5x gobfins with vanguard and stronghold strategist is the correct build because it means you don't have to deal with the shit AI

i think these two creatures most clearly show how and why palworld succeeded where pokemon failed. both games wanted to make a modern internet/technology monster to appeal to the modern audience

do NOT use pals with transportation. their pathfinding is so broken and buggy it slows down large-scale production massively. something with logging 2 will log faster than something with logging 3 and transportation

if it was just unhinged pokemon clone with guns it would be pretty cool, but it adds dozens of extra mechanics on top of that which all tie back into capturing mons in really elegant ways
