I’ll record it next time I hear it but maybe just a description will be enough.
Sounds like a tiny bird but I’ve not seen it. It sounds almost like a squeak (not a squirrel) and I never hear more than the little peep over and over.
I rarely hear this bird close to home but I’ve been hearing them more frequently the past week.

Ava had a little burst of playful energy. She gets so easily distracted that she went from rolling on the floor with her mouse toy to leaping into the air when she saw a fly. She looked a bit disoriented afterwards like she didn’t know what to do with herself 😆

It’s a glorious 17°C right now after a 30+°C day yesterday. The neighbourhood birds are loving it and singing the praises of rain and cooler weather.
I haven’t heard the cardinal sing midday in many weeks but he’s been giving me a concert this afternoon.
Even Ava relaxed a bit and let me sleep a bit more than she has in a couple of months. I haven’t felt this rested in ages.

I only found out in the last few years that fight attendants don’t even get paid for the work they do while the plane is at the airport (so nothing while doing safety checks, boarding/deplaning, or even onboard medical emergencies as long as the plane is on the ground).
Bad enough their health is affected by the gross plane air, but greedy airlines haven’t even raised their wages much in decades.
Not only the environmental cost of plane fuel, but the mental health cost on the staff too.

I got my epic loot box from @npub170e…fmce “Britt Builds 3D” and my inner child is ecstatic!
Kitty skull for me and crow skull for my brother. I’ve never had 3D printed anything before and I didn’t expect kitty to have a smooth surface (I love petting the teeny ears and the soft butt 😄).
I’ve also never used fidget toys before and I’m now hooked on the dragon scale spinner ring. I never would’ve thought to pick that one but it was Britt’s idea and I’m thankful.
I also never bought anything from Etsy before but my Fedi friends are so creative I couldn’t resist. Ordered on Monday and got my little package this morning. What a delightful way to start the weekend!

I imagined being Tintin. I didn’t have any stories of girls having adventures and Tintin was a bit androgynous. As an artist I was in awe of the details of Tintin art. The waves from the water was awe-inspiring to me even as a kid.

My grandmother on my dad’s side gave my brother and I all the Tintin et Milou books which I did like back in the day, but I love Astérix et Obélix. I loved the play on words for their names.
Looking back on Tintin with adult eyes, though, I can see so many cringy racist portrayals of non-white characters all over the world. Lots of sexism too.

Just watched the latest “Astérix et Obélix: le combat des chefs” on Netflix and it was a lot of fun.
The animation was more artful and beautiful than I expected and there’s some anti-colonial messaging as well as some Avengers references.
If, like me, you grew up on the books you’ll find the 5-episode show satisfying. There’s plenty of adult humour and inside jokes that most young kids won’t notice.
One warning though: there’s lots of flashing (every time they take the magic potion - which is a LOT especially in the first and last episodes).
I had to look away in those scenes. If someone is very sensitive to flashing it’s maybe best to skip it, but you have a split second warning because they swallow the potion before the full screen flashing.
Another pleasant surprise is that the show has a really good soundtrack.

Maybe not a big deal if someone can see the image of a cute baby deer (aka fawn) but confusing if someone can’t.
I ran the original German in another translator and it said:
“Photo of a small fallow deer, a few weeks old. Delicate fur, sugar-sweet big eyes and ears.”
Makes much more sense than a “small dam brain” 😅
Now imagine this kind of error by artificial “intelligence” in a government context. Yikes.

It all started to go downhill with automatic windows. I remember my mom telling me that having a manual rolling window might be the only thing that saves you if your car is submerged in water.

I spent way too long redoing the water trying to get the reflection looking the way I wanted and in the end I just had to stop and be at peace with it. It’s hard to kick the perfectionism out.

Every year there’s a post about the latest UBI (Universal Basic Income) experiment (I’m convinced the “experiments” are going to be perpetual to avoid actually implementing it anywhere).
Every single time there’s some qualifier like “people didn’t lose the will the work” or “productivity didn’t go down” or “people went back to school for training” or “poor people didn’t even spend it on alcohol” or some such capitalist BS and it makes me rage that we still think people are only worthy of survival if they are employed or busting a gut trying to be employed.
I wish we’d change the name so the word “income” is removed. Universal Basic Survival Rate isn’t a sexy term but that’s basically what we’re trying to say when most of us want UBI.
It’s the bare minimum amount to be able to afford a basic quality of life given that we still put a price on housing, food, healthcare, education, etc.
It is NOT a replacement for improving access and quality of housing or food or healthcare or education.
It is NOT only for people who can or want to work. It is for EVERYONE. Otherwise it’s no better than what many of us have now.

I was invited by my parents to go out to a pub for a Saint Patrick’s Day dinner.
At the end of our meal I asked the server if they had port (it wasn’t on the menu but their bar looked fully stocked).
He looked confused like he’d never heard of this thing called “port”.
He checked and, yes, they did indeed have port. He came back to the table with a red wine glass with at least 5oz of port in it and my jaw dropped.
If you don’t know, port is usually served in a small glass and it’s usually about 3oz.
He charged us only $6cad for almost a double portion 😅

Being able to share in the frustration with someone who cares about you can alleviate some of that. Doing it alone can be so isolating. At least you have a good wingman by your side 😄

It’s frustrating how so much of our healthcare woes are often due to the lacking healthcare system than our body’s issues.
It’s no wonder people do their own medical research online when they are left to fend for themselves.
I hope you find that sweet spot so the transition is relatively smooth.

Shovelling snow is really hard work and a strain on the body so I’m sure the roaring machine is lifesaving. I often watch the neighbour use it. He’s usually so quick to get out there but I haven’t seen him yet today.

I don’t know if other places pay as well as government but I often see translation jobs in Ottawa or Montréal for $25/hr for freelance. Bigger companies might offer better plus benefits.
If I was more fluent and actually had translation skills I’d probably do freelance 😄

Yeah, the government isn’t going to defend anything but their interests. But translation will always be needed even if not through the Canadian government.

I don’t know how fiesty ON and NB get about French but Québec can get pretty loud about maintaining the language. We know how much the French love a good protest and any excuse to tip over cars that are prone to catching fire. The hockey sticks will come out

So many in the NWSL getting married lately and taking the man’s family name.
It’s a reminder that I hate that tradition of the woman taking the husband’s family name and often the children taking that name as well. A relic of a time when women and children were property.
I’m not a fan of having my dad’s name (which is of course from his father and so forth), but the alternative would be to have my mother’s father’s name and they were/are all abusive men.
I avoid using my last name as much as possible.

So many logins I need to change now that I’m slowly moving away from Gmail and Google in general.
I did four today and deleted a couple of accounts that didn’t seem worth the effort. This is going to be like early spring cleaning. Being ruthless about what I actually use and don’t need to hold onto.
A bit tedious but also satisfying once it’s done. I feel like 2025 is my year to really hone in on what’s important to me and make room for it by decluttering energetically and electronically.
