In my exploration of kpop I’m coming to the conclusion that it’s mostly not really my cup of tea, especially as I learn more about how dodgy the industry really is.

Reading the emacs-devel list is hilariousad sometimes.
Someone writes in sharing an Emacs logo (attached as a svg) they designed based on historic research. Then, after a couple of messages showing support, RMS chimes in asking how he can view the svg file, and the rest of the thread devolves into tech support and discussion on how problematic rust is (a lib that enables viewing svg is written in rust).

re: recycling, we're in Taipei now and we've had to sort the rubbish and bring it to the trucks in our area as well, and it's definitely made us more conscious about the stuff we buy. Like, "if we buy takeout food and take it home, then we need to wash the containers and put them in the containers bin, but that bin is almost full already and the pickup is not for another two days, so maybe let's sit at the park instead".
We're also heading to Taichung in a couple of days, if you have some places to recommend (definitely curious about stationery shops!), please let me know 😁

#Clojure fam, please help me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I want to test that my database transaction works; in this test I'm redefining my transaction helper to throw an exception. However, the println in the redefined function is never hit. Why is that? 🙇🏻‍♂️

If I look at the work I've been doing this week, maybe 5% of my time was spent writing the code that I eventually shipped.
The rest was spent understanding the problem space, researching potential solutions and their impacts on other production systems, consulting with domain experts, waiting for pipelines to pass, learning about edge cases I hadn't considered, then doing it again.
The code I shipped is trivial, an LLM could've written it 10x faster. Everything else? Still needs a human.

That's very interesting, thank you! My thinking was that The Little Schemer might be more approachable than SICP and that I could use the momentum from it for tackling the bigger book. Might have to revisit that assumption.
The reason ANSI Common Lisp is first is that I had already started on it before I made this plan, so I'm going to try to finish first (and somehow I actually don't find it super dry? I like the way it explains things, and the exercises).
I do have a copy of Land of Lisp (first Lisp book I bought a few years back!) but it somehow didn't work for me. Might have to revisit.

Whenever I look at pictures of flats for rent/sale, I can't help imagining what kind of people are living there now, what their life might be like. And one thing I notice very much is that hardly anyone has books anymore. I can understand if you're renting, you might not want to move tons of books around every year, but when you own a place?

Friends who are into #sewing, could I please ask for a sewing machine recommendation for a beginner? Something that is simple enough not to be overwhelming, but also powerful/durable enough to last a few years.
I've seen two options that seem good so far:
- Singer 4423 (simple controls, powerful, seems well built, can sew denim etc, but fewer stitches (23))
- Brother FS40 (more stitches, a little more affordable, looks a bit more complex)
Any other ones I should be considering?

I've been a photographer for almost 20 years now and the one thing I regret is how much money and mental energy I spent on gear.
When it comes down to it, the gear does not matter. What matters is a life well lived, and the pictures that are born from that.
